Drilling in Marcellus Shale Created 88K Jobs and $8 Billion Revenue in 2010, Will More than Double by 2020

Kathryn Klaber, president and executive director of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, spoke at the Youngstown/Warren (OH) Regional Chamber economic breakfast yesterday. She outlined the economic boom created by drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus. That boom is not only benefiting Pennsylvania, but also over the border in Ohio as well. Some of her comments included:

Total cumulative employment in Pennsylvania alone due to the Marcellus Shale is projected to grow from 88,588 jobs at the end of 2010 to 211,909 by the end of 2020, she said.

Added economic value is estimated to rise from $8.04 billion at the end of 2010 to $18.85 billion at the end of 2020.

Area companies are benefiting, including steel pipe makers Youngstown’s V&M Star and Wheatland Tube in Howland, along with treatment of waste water by Warren’s Patriot Water Treatment System.

Transporting the gas to market will require pipes and compressors, while landscapers will be needed to restore the land at the drill site, Klaber noted.
