PA DEP Not Aware of Any Companies Using Diesel Fuel in Fracking Fluids

Here’s what the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) had to say about the use of diesel fuel as a fracking fluid in PA as alleged by Congressional Democrats in their letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson two days ago:

Only a small amount of the fluid containing diesel – 589 gallons – was used in Pennsylvania, according to the letter [by Waxman, et al], and few details were available on Tuesday about who used the diesel in the state’s wells, or where and when it happened.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection spokesman John Repetz said Tuesday that the agency is not aware of any operators in the state using diesel fuel in fracking, although state rules requiring companies to disclose which fracking chemicals they use on a well-by-well basis will not go into effect until Saturday.

“Maybe a few years ago there may have been some diesel used in the drilling process,” he said, “but we’re not aware of any of the companies using it as a component of their fracking fluid.”

  1. “…but we’re not aware of any of the companies using it as a component of their fracking fluid.”

Exactly. They are “not aware.” Because it hasn’t been “documented.” And if it hasn’t been documented, then it hasn’t happened.

Like all those non-disclosure agreements that people sign when they sue an O&G company for contaminating their drinking water after some spill or leak.

“…but we’re not aware of any of the companies contaminating…”
