Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research – Brown Bag Seminar Series

Chuck Ammon, professor, Department of Geosciences, Penn State

The use of injection wells for disposal of oil and gas wastewater has been a practice for many decades.  As more domestic oil and gas is extracted with hydraulic fracturing, the volume of wastewater is expected to increase commensurately. Recent seismicity associated with underground injection of wastewater has increased the awareness of the potential hazards associated with deep well injection. Ammon will review history of induced earthquake science and discuss the factors that have resulted in triggering seismicity.

Pizza will be served.
