Pennsylvania CareerLink announced they are offering a training program for those interested in working as roustabouts in the shale gas drilling industry for free for 20 people. The four- to six-week training course normally costs $2,500.

People looking for entry-level jobs in the Marcellus Shale industry will be considered for free training through ShaleNET, a program through the Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center and Pennsylvania CareerLink.

The training program will provide aspiring gas field workers the skills they need to be entry-level roustabouts. The four- to six-week training will include rough terrain forklift operation, defensive driving, oil and gas operations training and other topics. The training is valued at $2,500, but will be made available to 20 people for free, said Michael Bakaysa, CareerLink site administrator.

The jobs pay $18 to $20 per hour and typically offer plenty of overtime, Mr. Bakaysa said. Those interested in the program may attend an informational session Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. at the CareerLink office at 135 Franklin Ave., Scranton.*
