The Basics
Gas well drilling in the Marcellus Shale – A brief overview of drilling in the Marcellus by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Although written for New York, it’s a good primer for all Marcellus Shale locations. Complete with more links to other resources. A good place to start if you’re new to drilling in the Marcellus.
PA Gas Lease – A website created by Ronald Stamets, who lives in Wayne County, PA. Several years ago he was approached by a landman offering $500 per acre for leasing rights on his property and Ronald started investigating. The website he created is a result of his (and others’) investigations, and is packed with useful resources, including videos, maps and more. Well worth your time to investigate, especially if you’re new to drilling in the Marcellus Shale.
Hydraulic Fracturing & Water Supply
Horizontal Shale Drilling (VIDEO) – An excellent video showing how shale drilling works, complete with a detailed explanation of hydraulic fracturing (or “fracing”), and an explanation of how horizontal drilling keeps water supplies safe and sound. A must-see video that will answer many of your questions about drilling in the Marcellus Shale. The video linked to is hosted on the American Petroleum Institute’s website, although it is available at a number of other websites as well.
American Petroleum Institute (WEBPAGE) – A page with a variety of resources, including videos and documents, explaining how horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing works.
Shale Gas and Drinking Water (WEBPAGE) – An article posted on The Energy Collective website by Geoff Styles, who has a degree in chemical engineering (U.C. Davis) and worked for Texaco for 22 years, in addition to working for NASA. Mr. Styles explores just what hydraulic fracturing is, how it’s done, and why it’s safe, particularly in the Marcellus Shale deposit. It is an extremely well written and enlightening article—short and to the point. A must read.
Water Facts #28 – Gas Well Drilling and Your Private Water Supply (PDF FILE) – A guide to water problems that might possibly occur from gas drilling activities, and the proper way to test water to ensure it is not contaminated from drilling. Written by the Penn State University’s School of Forest Resources.
Regulation
Draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement for New York – This is the official version of the new draft regulations for drilling in New York State. New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) took about a year to compose these regulations. In general they are OK for landowners–somewhat restrictive, but “good enough” for drilling to commence. If you want to know what the regulations say, grab a cup of coffee (to stay awake!) and start reading.
