PA Marcellus Shale Coalition Responds to EPA Plan to “Study” Hydraulic Fracturing

| | |

The following is a press release issued by the Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale Coalition in response to the rogue EPA’s announcement that they will study hydraulic fracturing (again):

The Marcellus Shale Coalition today issued the following statement regarding a plan by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to study hydraulic fracturing:

“The members of the Marcellus Shale Coalition develop and drill wells in an environmentally responsible manner, including the use of hydraulic fracturing to complete a well for production. Hydraulic fracturing has been an established and proven practice for 60 years in Pennsylvania and around the country, and has been regulated successfully by state agencies. There have been no identified groundwater contamination incidents due to hydraulic fracturing, as noted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, other state regulators and the U.S. Groundwater Protection Council.

“Similarly, there have not been impacts to surface water sources due to the practice. Water withdrawals in Pennsylvania are highly regulated by state agencies and water commissions, with a typical permitted withdrawal amounting to about one-half of one percent of the average flow of a stream or river.

“The MSC will provide information and participate as appropriate in EPA’s study. Our industry is confident that an objective evaluation of hydraulic fracturing will reach the same conclusion as other studies – that it is a safe and well-regulated process that is essential to the development of natural gas.”*

  1. The first time high volume slick water horizontal hydraulic fracturing was used in the Marcellus was 2003 according to Range Resources. The first multiple well pads came into existence in the Marcellus in 2007. When the Marcellus Shale Coalition starts out their press release with the lie that the companies have been doing this for 60 years, distrust the rest of their commentary. MSC is a PR firm….nothing more….Masters of spin, untruths, and propoganda.

That said….the drilling, all by itself, has been determined by the DEP here and elsewhere as causing a great deal of contamination of water and air.

  3. this article is a pack of lies. There is groundwater contamination in Dimock where I am. The hydraulic fracking done for the past 60 years is not the same method as they use now. This kind of deep fracking has not been done before in Pa. Look at Texas, Wyoming and West Virginia if you want to know what fracking really does.

  4. Jim,
Keep spinning in favor of the gas gangsters. When the house of cards comes crashing down and they cover their asses, they won’t be looking out for you.
John Hangar, who I wanted to believe was a “good man”, lied in the documentary “Gasland” when he told Josh Fox there were NO cases of water contamination due to frack drilling. Then after the film was released he took a stand against the drillers in Dimock for polluting the wells. In the end he didn’t deliver. They settled for peanuts and those people are still stuck with properties they can’t use or sell and bad water. He still covers his ass to this day by coming out against the NYT article citing radioactive waste being dumped in the drinking water.
He’s a liar. And he was one of the better ones. The rest, especially Katryn Klaber, are compulsive liars. That’s the kind of people you seem to favor.
Hey Jim… has the 55% tax on casinos in Pennsylvania hurt the industry? Guess what… Pennylvania casinos produced more income for the state money junkie politicians than Las Vegas last year!
You’ve got a lot to learn… and you will learn… the hard way.
The gas protesters in this state have sacrificed thier time, comfort and treasure to protect the
un-informed and mis-informed in this state.
