Mansfield OH Getting Two New Wastewater Injection Wells

Looks like two more injection wells are coming to Ohio. These new wells will be built near Mansfield (Richland County), Ohio and are specifically designed to handle 200,000 gallons of fracking wastewater per day from Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling operations.

A Texas company has proposed building two 1,000- to 5,000-foot-deep injection wells on the city’s far north side to accept fluid wastes from natural gas drilling — also known as fracking.

Preferred Fluids Management of Austin, Texas, would accept brine from southeastern Ohio and Pennsylvania, Harry Winfrey of Richland Engineering told the city planning commission Tuesday.

The wells would be constructed in the Mansfield Lahm Airport industrial park, on a 4.9-acre site southwest of Knight Parkway’s dead end. The company is seeking site plan approval, Winfrey said. The planning commission tabled the request until its 3 p.m. Nov. 22 meeting in city council chambers.

The PIOGA Press, an industry newsletter, ran a story in June reporting Preferred Fluids Management had received all necessary permits to construct two wells in Mansfield. In the article, company President Steve Mobley said he believed each well could receive at least 200,000 gallons daily.

"The site will be the first of its kind in Ohio — sized for the unprecedented demands of the Marcellus and Utica shales," he told the PIOGA Press. "It’s a greenfield site with permits for two purpose-drilled high volume wells. We located it where we could find good geology, rail receiving capabilities and good roadway access.

"Unlike most other commercial sites in Ohio, this is a shale-scale well with minimal impacts on Ohio’s infrastructure," the article said.*
