Anti-Drillers Organize to Oppose LPG Fracking in NY

| | |

It’s time for MDN to say, “I told you so.” More than two weeks ago MDN said the following when it was announced a group of New York landowners are about to sign a lease and move forward with waterless LPG fracking technology:

So MDN asks, what will the enviro-left do when all of their stated reasons for opposing fracking are gone? That’s right, they’ll invent new reasons to continue covering the ugly fact that they are prejudiced against fossil fuels and that anything not “sustainable” and “alternative” is not acceptable in their worldview. It will be fascinating to watch how this develops. (MDN: Alternative Fracking Method May Soon Debut – in New York!)

Yesterday, a group of the usual anti-drilling groups sent a letter to Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens seeking (demanding really) that LPG fracking not be allowed to go forward in the state (a copy of the letter is embedded below). The obstructionist groups say that a full blown environmental impact statement needs to be filed for LPG fracking, the way the state has done for water-based fracking (which incidentally has now taken four years, and still there is no drilling). Their aim is obvious—stop all drilling for natural gas in the state regardless of the technology and method used to extract the gas.

Here’s the list of signatories on the letter—the list of those people and groups who seek to deny landowners in New York the right to allow drilling on their private property:

  • Kate Sinding, Senior Attorney, Natural Resources Defense Council
  • Deb Nardone, Director, Natural Gas Campaign, Sierra Club
  • Deborah Goldberg, Managing Attorney, Northeast Office, Earthjustice
  • Nadia Steinzor, Marcellus Shale Regional Organizer, EARTHWORKS Oil & Gas Accountability Project
  • Anthony Ingraffea, Ph.D., PE, Dwight C. Baum Professor of Engineering, Cornell University
  • Neil F. Woodworth, Executive Director and Counsel, Adirondack Mountain Club
  • Wes Gillingham, Program Director, Catskill Mountainkeeper
  • Kate Hudson, Watershed Program Director, Riverkeeper, Inc.
  • Maya van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper, Delaware Riverkeeper Network
  • Roger Downs, Conservation Director, Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter
  • David VanLuven, Director, Environment New York
  • John Rumpler, Senior Attorney, Environment America
  • Katherine Nadeau, Water & Natural Resources Program Director, Environmental Advocates of New York
  • Sarah Eckel, Legislative & Policy Director, Citizens Campaign for the Environment
  • Cathleen Breen, Clean Water Program Director, New York Public Interest Research Group
  • John L. Barone, Vice-President of Conservation, Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, Inc.

They are unreasonable and driven by ideology—all fossil fuels are evil. Can it be any more obvious?

  1. Your poll  question for the week is puzzling and unanswerable; sort of like answering ”  did you stop beating your wife” …yes or no . By definition, an anti-driller will oppose LPG fracking or any kind of fracking.  The question for the poll should have been more like: “Can the public  be won over to support LPG fracked natural gas  well drillng if the environmental advantages are well understood by the public?”
