S&P Global Ratings bumped Gulfport Energy up a notch last Friday (July 24), raising the Utica driller's credit rating to 'BB-' from 'B+' with a stable outlook. For a company that filed Chapter 11 in November 2020 and walked out of bankruptcy court in May 2021, that's a genuine turnaround story (see Gulfport Energy Emerges from Bankruptcy w/New Board, CEO/CFO Gone). Let's translate what the ratings agency said into plain English — and then figure out what it means for the three groups MDN readers fall into: landowners, the folks Gulfport buys services from, and everybody watching the Ohio Utica for signs of life.
