FERC Debates Data Centers, the Grid, and Power Generation

In a very short period of time, data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) appeared on the radar as very large potential customers for natural gas due to their need for power. Out of the blue, we began to read about drillers and pipeline companies talking with potential data center customers about flowing Marcellus/Utica molecules to their operations so they can generate their own electricity (for example, see TC Energy in Advanced Talks to Build Pipes Direct to Data Centers). But wait a minute. Not so fast. Although data centers may *want* to generate their own power, or sometimes pay a vendor to do it for them, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will have something to say about these facilities and how they connect to the existing power grid.
