Frankenwells (credit: Canadian Energy Center)
This story is technically not about the Marcellus/Utica, but it could be. It comes from our neighborly neighbors (not!) to the north in Canada. Our Canadian compatriots in the oil and gas world have discovered a “weird and wonderful” drilling innovation in Alberta that is helping producers tap more oil and gas at lower cost and with less environmental impact. The Canucks are drilling wells in configurations with names like fishbone, fan, comb-over, and stingray. These “multilateral” wells turn a single wellbore from the surface into multiple horizontal legs underground. Cool.
