Vistra Now Owns 2 Original “Marcellus” Power Plants in PA

| | | | |
Back in January, we told you that Vistra Corp. had agreed to buy Cogentrix Energy and its 10 natural gas-fired power plants from private equity firm Quantum Capital Group for about $4 billion (see Quantum Capital Selling Cogentrix Gas-Fired Plants for $4 Billion). On Friday, Vistra announced the deal is done. The 10 plants total 5,496 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity, and two of them, Patriot (Lycoming County) and Hamilton-Liberty (Bradford County), sit right on top of the Marcellus Shale. Those two were the first power plants in Pennsylvania built specifically to burn local Marcellus gas. The closing wasn't completely painless. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Antitrust Division worried that Vistra would own too many power plants in New England, so Vistra is selling two plants there, one of its own and one from the Cogentrix bunch.
