EQT is seeking Elizabeth Township's (Allegheny County, PA) approval for a conditional use permit for its six-well Heracles fracking operation, located about half a mile from Elizabeth Forward High School, alarming residents concerned about health and safety risks to roughly 760 students. A state appellate court invalidated the original permit in 2025 because the site shared a lot with a single-family home, but EQT subdivided the property as a workaround—a move Big Green group Protect Elizabeth Township is challenging in court. Despite lacking a local permit, the site has produced over 35.5 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas since April 2024, raising rule-of-law concerns. Commissioners have 45 days to decide.
