Special Edition: POGLA Presentation 2022
MDN Editor Jim Willis had the honor of presenting today at the Pennsylvania Oil & Gas Landowner Alliance (POGLA) annual meeting. Jim took on the topic of SWOT: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats for PA Shale Drilling. The aim was to inform landowners and rights owners about where we find ourselves today, what influences more (or less) drilling for hydrocarbons in the state, and how landowners and rights owners can potentially take advantage of our current status. Jim put in a lot of research and thinking into the presentation. We bring you his presentation today in lieu of our regular lineup of news stories (Jim didn’t have time to do both!).
Below is not only the slide deck from the presentation but also Jim’s running commentary/notes for each slide. So sit back, open up the presentation, and get up to speed on PA shale drilling.

In what appears to be a regular occurrence, the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection’s online database of oil and gas permit information is offline once again, throwing an error. Very frustrating. We checked Ohio’s numbers and found only a single new permit issued for last week. West Virginia issued five new permits last week. Given that PA typically issues the most new permits, we’ve decided to hold back the report until we can complete it with PA data, hopefully early next week. We’ll keep you posted.
In April, MDN told you about an exciting new FREE service for landowners and rights owners called
If you’ve read Marcellus Drilling News for any length of time, you know it’s a rarity for editor Jim Willis to take a full week of vacation. But he’s decided to do it for the week of July 4-8. We will not post during the week–unless there’s earth-shattering news to share! Otherwise, we will be back on July 11 to catch you up on all the news related to the Marcellus/Utica. We hope you enjoy(ed) the 4th!
Today, June 20th, is a stock exchange and bank holiday. Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the U.S. commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. Originating in Galveston, the holiday has since been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States, often broadly celebrating African-American culture. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in June 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
MDN will not publish on Friday, May 27, nor on Monday, May 31. Jim is taking Friday off in preparation for a wedding happening in his family. Monday is, of course, the Memorial Day holiday. A shout out to all of our currently serving and former veterans, and remembrance for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. They are not forgotten.
As we have in previous years, MDN will not publish today (Friday) in observance of Good Friday and the Easter holiday. We hope you enjoy this blessed time of year!
Believe it or not, today is a New York Stock Exchange holiday (i.e. bank) holiday. MDN rarely takes a day off, so we tend to track with those holidays observed by the NYSE. Have no fear, we are monitoring the news and if anything earth-shattering happens, we’ll bring you the latest. Otherwise, look for full-strength MDN to return tomorrow.
A quick note to MDN readers to let you know that the software plugin we use to display PDF files is currently not functioning properly. When viewing a post with a PDF embedded the first page of the file should show immediately. It currently takes one to two minutes for the file to display. However, the file name is displayed and if you click on it, the full file should download to your computer and allow you to view it. We are working on a fix for this issue.
Dear MDN Reader:
It’s Columbus Day! MDN will not publish our regular list of stories today–but have no fear, we will be back tomorrow (Tuesday) with a full lineup.
MDN is taking a rare few days off for summer vacation–from Friday, July 16th through Wednesday, July 21st. We will be back on Thursday, July 22nd. Editor Jim Willis will continue to monitor the news and if anything BIG happens, he will issue a special bulletin.
MDN editor Jim Willis is taking a rare day off today, Friday, May 7, in order to travel and attend the graduation of his youngest child (a son)…from graduate school. Jim is a proud dad. He has three great kids. All three now have their master’s degree, and all three are teachers! Jim will catch you up on all the latest Marcellus/Utica news with the Monday edition. Have a great weekend.
