About MDN

  • MDN Website Passes 20,000th Post!

MDN editor Jim Willis isn’t much into tooting his own horn. But, well, this is kind of slow news day, so we’ll toot. Marcellus Drilling News began as a hobby and side project in January 2009. Little did Jim know that it would grow to become his full-time job and in April 2020, the blog/news site would surpass having 20,000 posts. That milestone was reached last week.

MDN Editor Jim Willis on The Crude Life Podcast – Listen Now!

MDN Editor Jim Willis had the pleasure of being interviewed on The Crude Life podcast last week. Jason Spiess, an award-winning multimedia journalist, hosts several radio shows in addition to the podcast. The podcast/radio shows focus mainly on the Bakken Shale (where Jason lives and works), but he also branches out to talk with those in other plays. This isn’t Jim’s first time appearing on The Crude Life (see MDN Editor Jim Willis Interviewed on “The Crude Life” Podcast). Last week Jim talked with Jason about the 1-2 punch of the supply shock and demand shock on the marketplace–from the coronavirus to Russia to Saudi Arabia to OPEC. The interview discusses whether pipelines are considered essential or not with states shutting down worksites and offices.

  • MDN Off Today – President’s Day Holiday 2020

Believe it or not, today is a New York Stock Exchange holiday (i.e. bank) holiday. MDN rarely takes a day off, so we tend to track with those holidays observed by the NYSE. Have no fear, we are monitoring the news and if anything earth-shattering happens, we’ll bring you the latest.  Otherwise, look for full-strength MDN to return tomorrow. In the meantime, we have issued the weekly calendar of events.

MDN on the Radio! Jim’s Top Concerns for M-U Shale in 2020

Last Thursday MDN editor Jim Willis had the pleasure of pre-recording an appearance on the radio program Shale Gas News, co-hosted by Jim’s friend Bill desRosiers (from Cabot Oil & Gas). We have the recorded segment below. In the interview, Jim offers up the main “threats” that he sees for the Marcellus/Utica (indeed all shale drilling) in 2020.

  • MDN Off for MLK Day – Jan 20, 2020

    Dear MDN Reader:

Since it is a stock exchange holiday, and to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., MDN is taking today off, Monday, Jan. 20. We are sending along an updated calendar of events relevant to the Marcellus/Utica for the next 90 days. Full strength MDN will return Tuesday!

  • Merry Christmas 2019 & Happy New Year 2020 from MDN

We wish you a Merry Christmas..and a Happy New Year! MDN will take off (i.e. no new stories posted) between Dec. 24 and New Year’s Day in observance of the holiday season. Don’t worry, we’ll still keep an eye on the news and if anything earth-shattering happens, we’ll post about it. However, our intent is to take a break from writing for an entire week. We will see you again on Thursday, January 2nd.

A brief note to thank you, our loyal readers, from the bottom of our heart. Thank you for subscribing and resubscribing year after year. We take our responsibility seriously to bring you the news–in context–throughout the year. We look forward to 2020 with eager anticipation for what it will bring in the Marcellus/Utica.

Enjoy this Christmas carol (and our wish to you) from the inimitable Celtic Women:

  • MDN Back Online – One of “Those” Kind of Weeks

Thank you for your patience while we navigated through web server hell this week. The MDN website was finally reactivated yesterday on its new server (computer). But then, as soon as that happened, MDN’s email account went offline due to some technical explanation we don’t fully understand, having to do with domain name servers and such. So if you sent MDN (or editor Jim Willis) an email yesterday afternoon/evening, he may not have received it. Feel free to re-send any messages you sent yesterday.

    Where do things stand now?…

  • MDN Off Today – Veteran’s Day

MDN will not publish today, Veteran’s Day. We thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice.

A quick update on the website: There may still be a few bumps as we are in the process of migrating the entire site to a new hosting plan that gives us a faster server with more space. Please bear with us. We will let you know when that process is complete. Also, MDN editor Jim Willis will attend the MidStream PA 2019 event in State College on Tuesday. We’ll bring you news from the event as the week progresses.

MDN Editor Jim Willis Interviewed on “The Crude Life” Podcast

MDN Editor Jim Willis had the pleasure of being interviewed on The Crude Life podcast earlier this week. Jason Spiess, an award-winning multimedia journalist, hosts several radio shows in addition to his podcast. The podcast/radio shows focus mainly on the Bakken Shale (where Jason lives and works), but he also branches out to talk with those in other plays. Jim talked about what he sees as the main stories happening here in the Marcellus/Utica region, as well as waxing philosophical about the role of fossil fuels–and those who (in Jim’s words) irrationally hate them. Give it a listen!

  • Unscheduled Day Off Today, Friday Sept. 13

MDN is not able to post today–please accept our apologies. A friend of the family suddenly and unexpectedly died earlier this week and the funeral is this morning. We pride ourselves on publishing each weekday with very few days off. This is a rare exception. We will be back Monday with all the latest news. In the meantime, we’ve published the latest version of our Calendar of Events of interest.

  • Abbreviated Post Today – Long Labor Day Weekend

MDN had intended to take today (Friday) off in addition to Monday’s Labor Day holiday. Sneaking in a last bit of time off for the summer. And then we spotted the BIG NEWS about the Constitution Pipeline decision from FERC. So we wrote up a post about that. This is truly big (and very good) news! Read all about it in our Constitution Pipeline post today.

Enjoy the Labor Day holiday! We’ll be back Tuesday with all the latest news.
