MDN Website Passes 20,000th Post!
MDN editor Jim Willis isn’t much into tooting his own horn. But, well, this is kind of slow news day, so we’ll toot. Marcellus Drilling News began as a hobby and side project in January 2009. Little did Jim know that it would grow to become his full-time job and in April 2020, the blog/news site would surpass having 20,000 posts. That milestone was reached last week.

As we have in previous years, MDN will not publish today (Friday) in observance of Good Friday and the Easter holiday. We hope you enjoy this blessed time of year!
MDN Editor Jim Willis had the pleasure of being interviewed on The Crude Life podcast last week. Jason Spiess, an award-winning multimedia journalist, hosts several radio shows in addition to the podcast. The podcast/radio shows focus mainly on the Bakken Shale (where Jason lives and works), but he also branches out to talk with those in other plays. This isn’t Jim’s first time appearing on The Crude Life (see
Believe it or not, today is a New York Stock Exchange holiday (i.e. bank) holiday. MDN rarely takes a day off, so we tend to track with those holidays observed by the NYSE. Have no fear, we are monitoring the news and if anything earth-shattering happens, we’ll bring you the latest. Otherwise, look for full-strength MDN to return tomorrow. In the meantime, we have issued the weekly calendar of events.
Last Thursday MDN editor Jim Willis had the pleasure of pre-recording an appearance on the radio program Shale Gas News, co-hosted by Jim’s friend Bill desRosiers (from Cabot Oil & Gas). We have the recorded segment below. In the interview, Jim offers up the main “threats” that he sees for the Marcellus/Utica (indeed all shale drilling) in 2020.
Dear MDN Reader:
We wish you a Merry Christmas..and a Happy New Year! MDN will take off (i.e. no new stories posted) between Dec. 24 and New Year’s Day in observance of the holiday season. Don’t worry, we’ll still keep an eye on the news and if anything earth-shattering happens, we’ll post about it. However, our intent is to take a break from writing for an entire week. We will see you again on Thursday, January 2nd.
Thank you for your patience while we navigated through web server hell this week. The MDN website was finally reactivated yesterday on its new server (computer). But then, as soon as that happened, MDN’s email account went offline due to some technical explanation we don’t fully understand, having to do with domain name servers and such. So if you sent MDN (or editor Jim Willis) an email yesterday afternoon/evening, he may not have received it. Feel free to re-send any messages you sent yesterday.
MDN will not publish today, Veteran’s Day. We thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice.
Thank you to MDN subscribers and readers yesterday who had to endure MDN website outages. Believe me, it was frustrating for me too! A quick update on the site moving forward, and what I’ve done to (hopefully) ensure what happened yesterday does not happen again.
MDN is on the road in beautiful Pittsburgh, covering the Shale Insight 2019 event, so today’s lineup of stories is all about yesterday’s opening day. We will return with full strength MDN news on Friday. Meanwhile, tag along with MDN and be a virtual attendee at our industry’s marquee event!
It’s Columbus Day! MDN will not publish our regular list of stories today–but have no fear, we will be back tomorrow (Tuesday) with a full lineup.
MDN Editor Jim Willis had the pleasure of being interviewed on The Crude Life podcast earlier this week. Jason Spiess, an award-winning multimedia journalist, hosts several radio shows in addition to his podcast. The podcast/radio shows focus mainly on the Bakken Shale (where Jason lives and works), but he also branches out to talk with those in other plays. Jim talked about what he sees as the main stories happening here in the Marcellus/Utica region, as well as waxing philosophical about the role of fossil fuels–and those who (in Jim’s words) irrationally hate them. Give it a listen!
MDN is not able to post today–please accept our apologies. A friend of the family suddenly and unexpectedly died earlier this week and the funeral is this morning. We pride ourselves on publishing each weekday with very few days off. This is a rare exception. We will be back Monday with all the latest news. In the meantime, we’ve published the latest version of our Calendar of Events of interest.
MDN is taking a rare vacation day today, Friday, August 23. We will be back on Monday to catch you up on all the latest news. In the meantime, we’ve updated our Calendar of Events (next post).
