PTT Clearing Ohio Cracker Site, Nearby Residents Must Move?

OH-WV mapIn April 2015 PTT Global announced they had chose a site in Belmont County, OH as the site of for their $5.7 billion ethane cracker complex (see It’s Official: Belmont County Chosen as POSSIBLE Cracker Plant Site). In short order PTT began spending money on the project, doling out $100 million for two engineering firms to design the plant (see PTT CEO Arrives in OH to Announce First $100M for Cracker Plant). As for real estate, part of the chosen site is the 130-acre R.E. Burger Plant, a coal-fired electric generating plant owned by Ohio utility company FirstEnergy. The Burger Plant site is currently being cleared and remediated by FirstEnergy. However, the entire project will need something like 400-500 acres. So where will the extra real estate come from? MDN previously reported that PTT had signed an option to buy 300 acres adjacent to the Burger Plant site owned by Ohio-West Virginia Excavating (see 300 Acres Next to FirstEnergy Site Part of Belmont Cracker Plan). But it seems that still may not be enough. We spotted a story that says residents who live west of the Burger Plant site have been contacted to let them know they may need to move too…

Yale Arrives in Belmont County to Study the Evils of Fracking

YaleDon’t worry, you stupid farmers in Belmont County, OH. A really really smart liberal from Yale University (who believes in the fairy tale of man-made global warming) has arrived in your midst and is willing to pay you big money–$20 (yes, twenty dollars)–to participate in a “study” with a pre-determined outcome that you’re being poisoned by fracking. The latest laughable “research study” by a small group of Yale “researchers” is underway in Belmont. The researchers are looking for 100 local yokels who are willing to tell them how they’ve been harmed by fracking, so the researchers can plaster the Yale name on yet another fraudulent study funded by Big Green organizations. We’ve seen this movie before. In 2014 Yale researchers released a similar study of 180 people in Washington County, PA, funded by Heinz Foundation and other Big Green funders (see Research for Hire: Anti Groups Sponsor Latest Yale Frack “Study”). At least in that earlier study the authors were honest enough to admit there was no evidence that fracking was affecting local residents. The outcome of this new Belmont County study is already decided, based on earlier anti-fracking advocacy work done by the study’s main author, Nicole Deziel…

Belmont County, OH Farmers & Rice Energy Have Something Special

Love StoryRice Energy and farmers in rural Belmont County, OH have a great relationship. You can tell by the way each talks about the other. Farmers love Rice because the company is responsible and works with farmers to protect their land and farming livelihood. And the farms of Belmont County have treated Rice Energy well–very well. Yesterday MDN reported on first quarter 2016 production in Ohio (see MDN Exclusive: Analysis of Ohio’s 1Q16 Shale Production). If you look at the average daily natural gas production for 1Q16, the top 14 highest producing wells (daily average) are all located in Belmont County and they were all drilled by Rice Energy. Yes, the farmers of Belmont and Rice have something special going on. You might call it a love story…

PTT Global Says Belmont, OH Ethane Cracker NOT Delayed

PTT Global logoPTT Global Chemical, based in Thailand, announced in April 2015 they are interested in building a $5 billion ethane cracker plant complex in Belmont County, OH (see It’s Official: Belmont County Chosen as POSSIBLE Cracker Plant Site). From the beginning, PTT let it be known a final decision on whether or not to invest the whole $5 billion would not come until 2016 or 2017. Last week MDN picked up a story from the Bangkok Post which said the decision will definitely come in 2017, calling the decision “delayed” (see PTT Global Says OH Cracker Decision “Delayed” Until 2017). Apparently stung by that story, a local PTT spokesman in Ohio has responded to say the Bangkok story is wrong–the decision is not “delayed” and is, in fact, on track…

PTT Global Says OH Cracker Decision “Delayed” Until 2017

PTT Global logoIt’s only been one year since Thailand-based PTT Global Chemical announced they are interested in building a $5 billion ethane cracker plant complex in Belmont County, OH (see It’s Official: Belmont County Chosen as POSSIBLE Cracker Plant Site). Since that time PTT has been busy, spending (by our estimates) at least $150 million on the project (see our list of PTT stories here). However, from the very beginning, PTT let it be known a final decision on whether or not to invest the whole $5 billion would not come until 2016 or 2017. We know have confirmation from PTT that the final decision will (disappointingly) come in 2017. The reason for the “delay” in the decision? Falling oil prices…

Steady Progress at Belmont County, OH Ethane Cracker Plant Site

OH-WV mapIt was exactly a year ago (last Friday) that PTT Global Chemical announced their intentions to build an ethane cracker plant in Belmont County, OH (see It’s Official: Belmont County Chosen as POSSIBLE Cracker Plant Site). Since that time a number of positive signs have occurred that indicate this is a real, very serious project. One such sign is that PTT is paying $100 million to have the engineering work done for the plant (see PTT Announces 2 Contractors Working on Belmont Cracker Plant). Another sign is that demolition work at the site has begun (see Ongoing Demolition Work at Future Belmont OH Ethane Cracker Site). The demolition work, as well as the design work, continues. Here’s an update on the latest good signs coming from the proposed Belmont cracker plant…

Top 10 Shale Wells of 2015 for Marcellus, Utica, Entire Country

Rystad Energy Ranks, a data company based in Norway, hosts web-based portal with easy-to-use access data on oil and gas wells around the globle. They call their service “Rystad Energy cubes.” Rystead has made a wealth of data available in predefined “ranking lists” where the user can change filter settings to drill into and slice and dice the data. They call it their “database list format Ranks.” Up to now, Rystad Energy cubes have been available only through Rystad Energy’s proprietary Cube Browser. With “Ranks” users can now access predefined analyses based on the same databases. The really cool thing? They offer the “top 10” for various queries absolutely free. No registration required. We took it for a spin and produced Top 10 lists for Marcellus Shale well production in 2015, Utica Shale well production in 2015, and all American shale wells for 2015. As you might imagine being an MDN reader, most of the wells in the “all American” list are wells located in the Marcellus/Utica…

Ongoing Demolition Work at Future Belmont OH Ethane Cracker Site

Bulldozers and heavy equipment continue to demolish an old coal-fired electric plant in Belmont County–at the site where PTT Global Chemical says they want to build a $5.7 billion ethane cracker plant. It’s a good sign that PTT continues to spend big money on the project. PTT is in the midst of spending $100 million on engineering plans for the plant (see PTT Announces 2 Contractors Working on Belmont Cracker Plant). The project is the first of all the announced cracker projects in the northeast to get its own website (see Getting Serious: Ohio Ethane Cracker Gets its Own Website). And now, demolition at the FirstEnergy R.E. Burger power plant site…

New Marcellus/Utica Driller Quietly Launches w/$800M Investment

APP logoDetails are just now coming to light of a new E&P (exploration and production, or drilling) company headquartered in Pittsburgh and focused totally on the Marcellus and Utica region. Until now the company has flown under our radar. The company is American Petroleum Partners (APP)–not to be confused with Aubrey McClendon’s American Energy Partners (AEP)–and is headed by Rice Energy alumnus Varun Mishra, who is the founder and CEO. The big news is that last September Mishra’s new company, founded in 2014, received a major injection of investment capital. Apollo Global Management invested $411 million in APP with the option to double it up to $800 million. MDN has it on very good authority that although APP quietly issued a press release about this last September (see it below), the company has intentionally kept the news quiet. Not any more! Big mouth MDN is blabbing it to the world. Below are the bits and pieces we’ve been able to put together about this newest Utica/Marcellus driller…

Truck Crash Spills 5000 Gal. of Brine into OH Reservoir

barnesville ohioA trucking company contracted to haul brine (i.e. naturally occurring water from the depths that comes out of a borehole long after drilling operations are completed) for Gulfport Energy crashed last Wednesday early in the morning and spilled 5,000 gallons of brine onto a field, which found its way into a creek, which emptied into a local reservoir serving Barnesville, OH residents (Belmont County). The trucking company is ECM Energy Services Inc. Barnesville was not drawing any water from the reservoir at the time (they have three local reservoirs from which to draw), so there was no threat to the local human population. Neither was there any impact on the local wildlife population. In fact, it was pretty much a non-event–except for the way it was inaccurately portrayed by media outlets like the Columbus Dispatch, whose reporter either intentionally misrepresented the facts, or was too obtuse to understand the facts…

Belmont County, OH has Top 10 Most Productive Utica Wells in 4Q15

Last week MDN reported on Ohio’s Utica Shale production numbers for 2015–which more than doubled (see Ohio Utica Shale Production Doubles in 2015! Top 5 Counties & Drillers). We gave you a bit of analysis on the top counties and drillers. Today we bring you more analysis of those numbers. Specifically, during the last quarter of 2015, the top 10 most productive Utica wells in Ohio were found in one county: Belmont. Eight of the top 10 wells in 4Q15 were drilled by a single driller: Rice Energy. Here’s more juicy details about Ohio’s Utica production in 4Q15 and for all of 2015…

Getting Serious: Ohio Ethane Cracker Gets its Own Website

A brief mention, because it’s noteworthy. PTT Global is the Thailand-based chemical company floating a plan to build a multi-billion dollar ethane cracker plant in Belmont County, OH (see It’s Official: Belmont County Chosen as POSSIBLE Cracker Plant Site). Since the announcement last April, PTT has taken a number of steps toward making the Belmont ethane cracker a reality. They are in the midst of spending $100 million on engineering plans for the plant (see PTT Announces 2 Contractors Working on Belmont Cracker Plant). Paris, France-based Technip was also hired to design and build the furnaces and other key components of the cracker (see French Co. Gets Contract for Key Components in Belmont Cracker). It may seem minor in comparison, but PTT has just launched a new website dedicated to the cracker plant project…

Rice Energy, Gulfport Midstream Form Midstream JV in Eastern OH

Rice Energy, a pure play driller in the Marcellus/Utica, and Gulfport Midstream, a subsidiary of Gulfport Energy (big driller in the Utica) have entered into a joint venture. The new jv is called Strike Force and the purpose is to connect to and gather natural gas from wells drilled in Belmont and Monroe counties in Ohio. That is, this is a new midstream business. Rice contributed $41 million, certain pipelines, facilities and rights of way in return for a 75% ownership of the jv. Gulfport contributed an existing gathering system in return for their 25%. Neither Rice nor Gulfport have made a public announcement about the new venture. We know of it via a Securities and Exchange Commission 8-K filing…

Antis Not Happy with Results of OH Fracking Study They Funded

Researchers from the University of Cincinnati have been studying fracking and its potential affects on water wells in five Ohio counties for the past three years. The lead researcher, Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, shared the results at a recent meeting of the anti-drilling Carroll Concerned Citizens. She said, “The good news is that our study did not document that fracking was directly linked to water contamination.” Oh oh. That’s NOT good news for antis–and frankly, they didn’t like her telling them the truth of what her study found. Townsend-Small also said this, “I’m really sad to say this but some of our funders, the groups that had given us funding in the past, were a little disappointed in our results.” You can be sure that any future funding for studies Townsend-Small wants to make, at least from radical environmentalists, will be nonexistent. She had the temerity to tell the truth–to the people who hired her to not tell the truth. That takes courage…

3 Marcellus/Utica Truck Accidents in Ohio Valley – in Past 7 Days

With Marcellus and Utica Shale drilling comes truck traffic–a lot of truck traffic. Which is great if you’re a driver who needs work, or a trucking company who wants to chase the business. But not so great if you live in the area where trucks are jamming up the roadways. Another downside to the truck traffic is the occasional accident. In the past week there have been three truck accidents in the Ohio Valley area–in Wetzel and Marshall counties in WV, and Belmont Count in OH. Two of the three required a hazmat team to deploy. Here’s the details…

OSU Prof “Optimistic” that OH Ethane Cracker Will Get Built

There’s not much new news to report on any of the three ethane cracker plants announced as being thought-about for the Marcellus/Utica. Those three are Shell’s project planned for Beaver County, PA, Odebrecht’s project announced for Wood County, WV, and PTT Global’s project announced for Belmont County, OH. Both the Shell and PTT projects appear to still have a pulse. WV’s does not. Hey, just keeping it real. One professor at Ohio State University says he is an “optimist” regarding the PTT project, for a number of reasons. When an OSU prof is optimistic, it gives us reason to be optimistic too! Here’s the reason our OSU prof believes the PTT Global ethane cracker will get built…
