Ohio Supreme Court Affirms Permit for 3.7-Mile Pipe Near Toledo

Yesterday, the Ohio Supreme Court issued a “slip opinion” dismissing a challenge to a tiny 3.7-mile, 30-inch pipeline Columbia Gas wants to build in Maumee, a city in Lucas County, Ohio, a suburb about 10 miles southwest of Toledo. The owners of a commercial office building claimed they would suffer “irreparable financial harm” if the pipeline were built near their office building. The pipeline does not cross any land owned by the company but does cross land adjacent to the building. Ohio Extends Time to Build 2nd Utica-Fired Elec Plant Near Toledo

In December 2017, MDN told you about a second proposed natural gas-fired power plant planned by CME Energy for Oregon (Lucas County), Ohio (see Ohio Approves 2nd Oregon Utica-Fired Elec Plant (Near Toledo)). The first plant was called the Oregon Clean Energy Center. The second plant project was named Clean Energy Future – Oregon. The second plant is bigger than the first, targeted to generate 955 megawatts of power. At that time (in 2017), CME was in the permitting process for the second plant, with plans to have it built and online in 2020. Fast forward to today. The plant was never built but is still being planned.

NEXUS Pipe Gets Fed Approval to Buy Toledo Pipe for $160M

Here’s one we had not previously heard (or reported) on: NEXUS Pipeline, built and operated by DTE Energy and Enbridge, wants to buy a small 23-mile pipeline in the Toledo area that connects to local utility companies in the region. The smaller pipeline is called the Generation Pipeline and is owned by North Coast Gas Transmission, which in turn is owned by Somerset Gas Transmission.

CELDF Loses Yet Again – Toledo Anti-Fracking Measure Blocked

In September, MDN told you that the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that a ballot measure backed by the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) in Columbus, OH, a measure meant to ban fracking to send a “you’re not welcome” message to Utica drillers, is in fact illegal and will not appear on the November ballot (see OH Supreme Court Rules Columbus Anti-Utica Ballot Measure Illegal). The Ohio Supremes have ruled again, this time declaring a similar CELDF ballot measure in Toledo is also illegal.

Ohio Approves 2nd Oregon Utica-Fired Elec Plant (Near Toledo)

In August, Ohio Gov. John Kasich officiated at a ceremony to launch a new Utica gas-fired electric generating plant in Oregon (Lucas County), near Toledo (see New 870 MW Gas-Fired Electric Plant in NW Ohio Begins Operation). CME Energy’s Oregon Clean Energy Center plant generates 870 megawatts of electricity. The plant cost $900 million to build. What we haven’t focused on, until now, is CME’s proposal to build a second Utica gas-fired electric plant next to the first one. The first plant is called Oregon Clean Energy Center. The second plant project is named Clean Energy Future – Oregon. The second plant is bigger than the first, targeted to generate 955 megawatts of power. Clean Energy Future – Oregon is currently in the permitting process. If all goes well, CME plans to begin commercial operation in 2020. Fluor Corporation is constructing this second project, as they did the first. Construction is scheduled to begin early next year. The reason the project appeared on our radar screen is because yesterday the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) gave Clean Energy Future – Oregon a big, fat, sloppy kiss of approval…
