6 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV May 23-29

It appears the wind has gone right out of the sails when it comes to issuing new permits for shale drilling in the Marcellus/Utica. For the week of May 23-29, only six new permits were issued. Four of the permits were issued in Pennsylvania, two in West Virginia, and none in Ohio. This is the lowest number in a single week we’ve seen in maybe forever. A measly, lousy six permits!

The Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) finally got their reporting system back online after it had gone down for a second time in three weeks. The top permitees in PA were EQT and CNX, both with five permits each. In Ohio, 11 new permits were issued, with Encino Energy receiving four and Gulfport three permits. 6 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 21-27

The good news is that the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection’s online reporting site is back online and we were able to retrieve new shale drilling permits for two weeks ago (Feb. 21-27). The bad news is that there was a paltry four permits issued during that week. Perhaps the DEP site/system is not yet fully populated with permits issued during that time? Ohio issued two permits during the same week. And West Virginia issued (gasp) zero during that week. This has to be the lowest number of permits issued during a single week we can remember–ever.

New Shale Permits Report Delayed Due to PA DEP Computer Problem

Each week MDN brings you a report of new permits to drill shale wells issued during the previous week for Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Last Wednesday MDN noticed a problem with the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection’s reporting website that prevented us from harvesting data and delivering our weekly report. We alerted the DEP to the issue. Their problem is much larger than just oil and gas reporting. It extends to several other systems as well, including the ability for drillers to upload required reports. When will it be fixed?
