5 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Mar 18 – 24

There was a pretty dismal showing for new permits issued to drill in the Marcellus/Utica during the week of Mar. 18 – 24, with a drop of 11 permits from the prior week to just 5 new permits issued. Pennsylvania issued all 5 of the new permits. Ohio and West Virginia both issued no new permits during that week. EQT (Rice Drilling) was issued 2 new permits in Greene County. Blackhill Energy and Chesapeake Energy each received 1 new permit to drill in Bradford County. And Range Resources was issued 1 new permit to drill in Washington County.

PA DEP Issues Violation to Blackhill Energy for Methane Migration

On February 8, 2024, the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued a notice of violation (NOV) to Blackhill Energy for failing to prevent the migration of shale gas into groundwater that contaminated three nearby private water wells in Springfield Township (Bradford County) in June of 2022. Yes, the NOV took nearly two years to get issued. We’re not sure why it takes so long to issue an NOV (perhaps a full investigation takes that long?), but it does. Blackhill self-reported the issue back in 2022 and presumably has already corrected it.

SRBC Approves 233M Gal/Day of Water Use for 38 PA Shale Pads

The difference between the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) and the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) is stark. The former is well-run and rational, the latter is disorganized and irrational. At least with respect to fracking. Over the weekend, the SRBC published a notice in the Pennsylvania Bulletin to announce that during the month of January, the agency approved 38 requests for daily water use on shale well pads in the SRBC’s jurisdictional territory in Pennsylvania, totaling some 233.5 million gallons. Put another way, this is a handy list of where drilling will soon happen in northeastern PA.

20 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV May 30-Jun 5

Two weeks ago a pathetically low six new permits were issued to drill shale wells across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia (see 6 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV May 23-29). Last week the number improved–with 20 new permits issued. PA had 13 permits with Range Resources, Olympus Energy, and Pennsylvania General Energy all scoring three permits each. OH issued six new permits with the state’s two most active drillers, Ascent Resources and Encino Energy, collectively grabbing five of the six. WV issued just one new permit–to Antero Resources.

14 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Apr 11-17

Last week Pennsylvania issued 12 new shale well permits, down three from the prior week. Coterra Energy (formerly Cabot Oil & Gas) had the most permits with four, all on the same pad in Susquehanna County. Southwestern had three permits all on the same pad in Susquehanna County. Chesapeake Energy also had a permit in Susquehanna County, making that county the top spot for new permits with eight last week. Ohio had no new shale permits issued last week. Bummer. West Virginia had just two permits, one for Southwestern Energy in Ohio County, and one for Antero Resources in Tyler County.

In Ohio, five new shale permits were issued, four of them to a single driller (Ascent Resources) in a single county (Jefferson). West Virginia came roaring back after getting skunked with no permits two weeks ago. WV issued 10 new shale permits last week with five going to a single well pad in Monongalia County.
