Exclusive: Huntley & Huntley Hires Big Fish to Expand Marc/Utica Program

A small western Pennsylvania energy company, Huntley & Huntley, has just stepped up its game in the Marcellus/Utica Shale. MDN has exclusively learned that H&H has hired industry veteran M. Christopher Doyle to lead the development and expansion of H&H’s Marcellus and Utica Shale operation. Doyle was most recently executive VP of operations at Chesapeake Energy, where he was in charge of the Marcellus/Utica region for Chessy. He’s also an 18-year veteran of Anadarko Petroleum where, once again, he was in charge of the Marcellus/Utica region. Deer Lakes School Signs Lease for $3,100/Acre + 18% Royalties

Attention Martian parents from the Mars School District in Middlesex Township (Butler County), PA: In Allegheny County (bordering Butler County on the south) the Deer Lakes School District has just signed a lease to allow shale drilling under school property. Why are you Martians so afraid of shale drilling? (see Martian Arrogance: Town MUST “Protect Us” from Drilling via Zoning) At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, Deer Lakes board members voted to lease 110 acres of school property for drilling under (not on) with Huntley & Huntley, Inc. The lease terms are $3,100 per acre in a signing bonus and 18% royalties–yielding a nice check for $341,000 to the school just for signing. Those terms are not quite as rosy as last year’s deal struck by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald who negotiated what turns out to be close to $4,000 per acre (and an 18% royalty) for leasing 1,180 acres in Deer Lakes Park (see Allegheny Co Exec Bests Range on Deer Lakes Park Lease Deal). Wolf’s Severance Tax Threat Costs Small PA Town $315,000

Two weeks ago the hapless newly elected governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, introduced a new 7.5% severance tax plan to soak the Marcellus Shale industry in his state (see PA Gov Wolf Proposes Marcellus-Killing 7.5% Severance Tax). Wolf wants to target one industry, oil and gas, to give their hard-earned money away to another industry, teachers. He’s trying to pay back all of those good union voters in Philadelphia who elected him. But Wolf’s threat of a tax is already having very tangible consequences. Huntley & Huntley Energy Exploration has pulled out of a deal to lease 90 acres of land owned by Harmar Township (Allegheny County), PA. That just cost Harmar $315,000. Why did Huntley & Huntley pull out? The uncertainty over Wolf’s severance tax. If the tax passes, a great deal of drilling in PA’s Marcellus Shale will be idled–and that’s not idle speculation…

Guest Viewpoint: Best to Lease ALL Rock Layers at One Time

Last week MDN told you about possibility that a rock layer some 20,000 feet below the surface may one day be an important player in natural gas and oil for the northeast (see Trenton-Black River: New Natgas Rock Layer in Your Future?). As part of that story, we wrote the following: “Landowners listen up. When you lease, ALWAYS specify the layer(s) in the lease that you will allow an energy company to drill. That way, in future years when yet other layers are “discovered” to have natural gas or oil deposits, you can re-lease for the new layer. Energy companies will understandably want to negotiate a lease for all layers. Landowners (and their lawyers) need to watch for and construct leases that favor the landowner. Murrysville Turns Down Millions for Park Lease, Looks to Tighten Regs

Final answer: No. Murrysville (Westmoreland County), PA Council voted to turn down millions of dollars to lease the 262-acre Murrysville Community Park for drilling under (not on) the park for shale gas. Huntley & Huntley–a company that often works as a land agent for Range Resources–has been courting Murrysville for nearly a year now (see Murrysville Park Lease to be Discussed at Meeting). In the end, it seems there just wasn’t enough support from residents to go forward. Guess they don’t need an extra pile of cash in Murrysville. They have enough, thanks.

Now, on to more pressing matters for the council–like crafting new zoning laws that make it hard to drill anywhere within the township…

Republicans (!) Seek to Slow Approval of Deer Lakes Park Lease?

To us, a somewhat strange case in the ongoing effort for Allegheny County, PA to lease land under Deer Lakes Park for drilling. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald squeezed Range Resources hard and negotiated a deal to allow Range to drill under (not on) Deer Lakes Park for a $4.7 million in signing bonus and 18% royalties, which will net the county something over $70 million over the next 20-30 years (see Allegheny Co Exec Bests Range on Deer Lakes Park Lease Deal). It’s a sweet deal. The only thing that remains is for the 15-member county council to approve it.

The strange part is a bid by a pair of Republicans to enlist outside legal counsel to review the lease–when council already has its own attorney for that purpose. Normally it’s the Republicans who are pro-drilling. The effort to get outside counsel, which failed in committee along a party-line vote of 5-2, is nothing more than a “stall tactic” according to Rich Fitzgerald. That’s the strange part–why would the Republicans want to delay this lease? Council will meet next Wednesday to take up the Deer Lakes Park lease again–hopefully to approve it…

PPG Blesses Deer Lakes Park Drilling in Allegheny County, PA

Stop Press! The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial board has blessed the proposed deal to drill under (not on) Deer Lakes Park in Allegheny County, PA. Last Thursday MDN told you how County Executive Rich Fitzgerald got even more money out of Range Resources than originally proposed (see Allegheny Co Exec Bests Range on Deer Lakes Park Lease Deal). Anti-drillers are squawking (what’s new?). However, the increasingly anti-drilling Pittsburgh Post-Gazette endorsing the deal? Now that IS news!

Murrysville Park Lease to be Discussed at Meeting

Last June MDN told you that Huntley & Huntley, a small conventional gas driller, had leased land surrounding the Murrysville Community Park in Westmoreland County, PA. At that time Huntley made overtures to Murrysville officials about leasing the land under the park for drilling from neighboring properties they already have under lease (see Conventional Driller Eyes Marcellus Under Murrysville, PA Park). Since that time MDN has learned that Huntley often works with and for Range Resources. Although it’s not clear if Range is the client in this case, we suspect that is the case.

Next Wednesday, Murrysville Council will take up a proposal from Huntley & Huntley (Range?) at their regularly scheduled public meeting. Both council members and Huntley want the public to attend and hear more about Huntley’s (Range’s?) plan, “in the interests of good communication.” Should be interesting…

Conventional Driller Eyes Marcellus Under Murrysville, PA Park

A privately-held, small conventional driller from southwestern PA near Pittsburgh, Huntley & Huntley, wants to begin drilling unconventional wells that target the Marcellus Shale. They’ve chosen Westmoreland County, PA as the place to do it. Huntley & Huntley has already leased land surrounding the Murrysville Community Park and now wants to lease the 305-acre park too. They plan to set up drill pads outside of the park, on adjoining land, and drill under the park.
