WV Chips in $10M to Attract $125M Hydrogen Project to Mason County

Mason County, WV

Last Friday, the West Virginia Economic Development Authority (EDA) approved spending up to $10 million in an economic incentive package for a project that Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has proposed. B&W plans to invest $125 million in WV’s Mason County to build a hydrogen production facility. One of the inputs (feedstock) for the facility will be natural gas. Another is coal. The EDA said the project could potentially expand into a $1 billion investment employing 200 people. Exciting stuff! Read More “WV Chips in $10M to Attract $125M Hydrogen Project to Mason County”

$2B WV Hydrogen Proj Taps Battelle to Develop Carbon Capture System

In August, MDN told you about a new $2 billion hydrogen project coming to West Virginia (see $2B Hydrogen Project Announces for WV – FidelisH2 in Mason Co.). Fidelis New Energy announced it had selected Mason County for a “net-zero” hydrogen production facility and low carbon microgrid, which it has dubbed The Mountaineer GigaSystem. The Fidelis plan includes building data centers powered by net-zero hydrogen. Fidelis will produce hydrogen with “zero lifecycle carbon emissions” from a combination of Marcellus/Utica gas, renewable energy, and CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration). Yesterday, Fidelis announced it has tapped Battelle Carbon Services to develop the CCUS portion of the project.

$2B Hydrogen Project Announces for WV – FidelisH2 in Mason Co.

The ARCH2 (Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub) project, the West Virginia-led effort to attract government funding for one of 6-10 regional hydrogen hubs, has just landed its second major commitment–even though ARCH2 hasn’t officially been selected for government funding. Yesterday Fidelis New Energy announced it has selected Mason County, WV, for a $2 billion “net-zero” hydrogen production facility and low carbon microgrid, which it has dubbed The Mountaineer GigaSystem. The Fidelis plan includes building data centers powered by net-zero hydrogen. Mountaineer will use FidelisH2 technology that produces hydrogen with zero lifecycle carbon emissions from a combination of Marcellus/Utica gas, renewable energy, and CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration).

WV Coal-to-Liquids Plant Using NatGas Gets State Approval

Mason County, WV

In June MDN brought you news of a “first of its kind” coal-to-liquids plant planned for Mason County, WV (see Proposed WV Coal-to-Liquids Plant Uses Natural Gas). The $1.2 billion project will create “ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, gasoline and other liquids.” The main two ingredients in the process are coal and (you guessed it), natural gas. Good news: the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection has approved the project, issuing a draft construction permit.
