Marcellus Sees Soaring Costs, Lower Production – Ranking Decreased

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

Operators and investors are more concerned than ever about the remaining inventory of drillable locations. Who has it? Where is it? Will it be economic? The North American inventory rankings by shale play are always of interest. Enverus Intelligence Research (EIR), a subsidiary of Enverus, recently issued a report that ranks the plays by the number of economic-to-drill locations each play has left. Unfortunately, Marcellus Shale play is on the list of “losers” in this latest report. Why? A huge jump in Bidenflation — rig day rates were up 25% year-over-year in September in the Marcellus, compared to about 15% across the other plays. Also a factor is dropping productivity in the Marcellus (“productivity degradation”), particularly in northeast PA.

Fracker Wants to Drill Under State Wildlife Area in Carroll County

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

In January 2023, Ohio House Bill (HB) 507 became law with the signature of Gov. Mike DeWine (see OH Gov. Signs Bill Expanding Drilling in State Parks, NatGas “Green”). The new law allows shale drilling under (but not on top of) Ohio state-owned land, including state parks. HB 507 encourages (pushes for) more drilling under state-owned land. The special commission created to award contracts — called the Ohio Oil & Gas Land Management Commission (OGLMC) — meets periodically to consider “nominations” (requests to drill). The OGLMC has just received another nomination…this one to drill under (not on) 128 acres of the Leesville Wildlife Area in Carroll County.

PA Legislature Rejects Radical Antis, Passes CCS Bill, Sends to Gov

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

A civil war in the Pennsylvania environmental movement is not getting any attention from mainstream media. Why are we not surprised? We told you about the civil war earlier this week (see PA Antis Split Over Issue of Carbon Capture & Sequestration). One set of environmentalist wacko groups, including the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Environmental Defense Fund, Nature Conservancy, and Clean Air Task Force, support PA Senate Bill (SB) 831, the Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) Act. The second group, including Better Path Coalition, 350 Pittsburgh, 412 Justice, the Center for Coalfield Justice, and the Clean Air Council, are opposed. We asked the question: Which group of wackos will the liberal Democrats of the PA legislature listen to? We now have an answer.

PA DEP Claims it Reduced Permits Backlog by Half Since 2023

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

Permitting in Pennsylvania overseen by the Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been a hot mess for years. A Chapter 102 Erosion and Sedimentation permit sometimes takes two, three, or even six to eight months for approval — instead of the law-mandated 14 days. It got so bad that in the fall of 2019, PA State Sen. Gene Yaw introduced a bill to allow third-party reviews of these permits to speed up approvals (see PA Sen. Yaw Intros Bill to Allow 3rd Party Review of Erosion Permits). In early March of this year, the DEP said it was making progress in reducing turnaround times for permits, including Chapter 102 permits (see PA DEP Claims Progress in Reducing Out-of-Control Permit Backlog). In late April, the DEP launched yet another initiative to reduce the time required to issue new Chapter 102 permits (see PA DEP Makes Effort to Speed Up Approvals for Erosion Permits). The DEP now claims it has reduced its massive backlog of permit applications by 56% since the end of last year. Progress, no?

Heinz Endowments Spends $9.3M to Support Groups Attacking PA Shale

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024
    Teresa Heinz Kerry

The Heinz Endowments, the “legacy” of former Senator and Heinz ketchup baron John Heinz (a Republican!), continues to fund virulent, wildly left anti-fossil fuel groups. Two days ago, Heinz announced another $9.3 million in grants. The vast majority of the money was given to groups that actively attack the Marcellus industry, including PennFuture ($400,000), PennEnvironment ($430,000), Food & Water Watch ($220,000), Center for Coalfield Justice ($400,000), and others (full list below).

Freeport LNG Remains Offline Following Hurricane Power Outage

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

On Tuesday, we told you that Freeport LNG closed its export plant on Sunday in anticipation of Hurricane Beryl hitting the Texas Gulf Coast (see Surprise! Freeport LNG Exports Shut Down Due to Hurricane Beryl). As of yesterday, the plant remained offline due to power outages in the region. Beryl came ashore in the area where the plant is located. So it’s understandable, with power still out for many, that the plant has been offline since Sunday. However, that may be changing as soon as today…

Buying & Selling of LNG Worldwide Increased 3.1% in 2023, New High

    July 12, 2024July 12, 2024

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade increased 3.1% globally in 2023 to an average of 52.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), an increase of 1.6 Bcf/d from 2022, according to a recently released report from the International Group of Liquefied Natural Gas Importers (GIIGNL). Expanded export and import capacity and increasing natural gas demand drove the growth in the global LNG trade last year.
