    National Rig Count Gains 4 @ 592; M-U Rig Count Adds 1 @ 35

    February 24, 2025February 24, 2025

For the fourth week in a row, the Baker Hughes U.S. rig count added rigs—to the highest level since last June! Three weeks ago, the rig count gained four rigs to 586. Two weeks ago, the count regained another two rigs to 588. Last week, the count added four new rigs for 592. Note that the national count remained in a tight range of 581-589 for much of last year. We’ve just broken through. As for the Marcellus/Utica, the rig count was a combined 35 last week, adding a new rig to the mix. The new rig was added in West Virginia. Finally, 1st Well Drilled Under Ohio State-Owned Wildlife Area

    February 24, 2025February 24, 2025

It was a long time coming, but a driller finally sunk a horizontal well under (not on) an Ohio state-owned park/wildlife refuge. The Ohio Oil & Gas Land Management Commission (OGLMC) awarded a contract to Encino Energy to drill under the Valley Run Wildlife Area on February 26, 2024. On that date, the commission selected Encino as the winning bidder for the mineral rights to frack under Valley Run Wildlife Area in Carroll County, Ohio, as part of a broader decision to lease parts of state-owned lands, including Salt Fork State Park and Zepernick Wildlife Area, to oil and gas companies (see Ohio Awards Drilling Contracts for State Parks – Salt Fork Surprise). Encino leased three parcels at Valley Run for $1.05 million. The OGLMC’s decision followed a bidding process that began in January 2024 and concluded with the commission’s approval of the “highest and best” bids at their meeting on February 26 last year. And now, finally, Encino has drilled its first well under Valley Run. Read More “Finally, 1st Well Drilled Under Ohio State-Owned Wildlife Area”

Trump Army Corps IDs Dozens of M-U Projects for Emergency Review

    February 24, 2025February 24, 2025

On President Trump’s very first day in office, he signed an executive order called “Declaring a National Energy Emergency” (see Trump EO Declares National Energy Emergency – “Drill, Baby, Drill!”). Trump’s EO prioritizes completing energy infrastructure projects, like pipelines. It specifically talks about the Clean Water Act’s Sections 403 and 404, which states like New York have used to block new pipelines. The EO contains this sentence: “Agencies are directed to use, to the fullest extent possible and consistent with applicable law, the emergency Army Corps of Engineers permitting provisions to facilitate the Nation’s energy supply.” The Army Corps recently marked for fast-track review more than 600 applications for permits. A number of them (dozens) are for shale wells and pipelines in the Marcellus/Utica region. Read More “Trump Army Corps IDs Dozens of M-U Projects for Emergency Review”

EQT’s Rice Says Natural Gas Will Take “Lion’s Share” of AI Power

    February 24, 2025February 24, 2025
    Toby Rice

EQT President and CEO Toby Rice joined CNBC’s ‘Mad Money’ host Jim Cramer on Friday to talk about the state of the energy sector, natural gas prices, energy development, and more. Rice claimed that natural gas will be a major source of power for the burgeoning AI boom. “We firmly believe that natural gas is going to take the lion’s share of power demand to meet this growing AI demand need,” Rice said. “And people need to understand, this is not just a luxury item, this is not just going to make our apps better, this is absolutely critical that America wins the AI race.” Read More “EQT’s Rice Says Natural Gas Will Take “Lion’s Share” of AI Power”

PA State Sen. Muth Tries to Block Shale Drilling Via Landfill Ban

    February 24, 2025February 24, 2025

Pennsylvania State Senator Katie Muth (Democrat from Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties) is clever and dedicated in her mission to halt shale drilling in the Keystone State. We’ve written plenty about Muth over the years (see our stories here). She’s attempted to block shale wastewater treatment facilities from getting built. She has a new target: To block shale cuttings—the leftover rock and dirt from drilling a hole in the ground—from being disposed of at landfills. Her approach is to block it based on leachate that comes from landfills. Read More “PA State Sen. Muth Tries to Block Shale Drilling Via Landfill Ban”

Big Tech Sees the Light – Dumps Renewables for Gas-Fired Power

    February 24, 2025February 24, 2025

Not all that long ago, we recall Big Tech, companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook (now called Meta), Google, and others insisting on “green” energy to power their operations. They refused to buy electricity from nasty fossil-fired power plants, even those using clean natural gas. Now? It’s a complete 180-degree turnaround. It’s amazing. It’s startling. Now, Big Tech can’t find enough gas-fired power for their AI data centers. Read More “Big Tech Sees the Light – Dumps Renewables for Gas-Fired Power”
