    36 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 10 – 16

    February 21, 2025February 21, 2025

For the week of Feb 10 – 16, the number of permits issued in the Marcellus/Utica to drill new shale wells soared. Two weeks ago, 24 new permits were issued. Last week, the number increased to 36 new permits issued. The Keystone State (PA) issued the vast majority with 23 new permits last week. Seven permits went to PennEnergy Resources, all on a single pad in Armstrong County. Snyder Brothers received five permits for a single pad, also in Armstrong County (meaning half the PA permits went to Armstrong). Range Resources was third in line with four new permits for a single pad in Washington County. Read More “36 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 10 – 16”

FERC Launches Investigation of PJM Grid Co-Location of Data Centers

    February 21, 2025February 21, 2025

We’re still coming to grips with understanding how the power generation market works with respect to providing electricity for AI data centers. Data centers can potentially be huge and important new customers for natural gas—especially Marcellus/Utica molecules, as some 25% of all the data centers currently operating in the country are located in northern Virginia, where they use M-U molecules. Ten days ago, we brought you a post to help you better understand the various scenarios for how powergen gets provided to these data centers (see A Better Understanding of AI Data Centers & On-Site Powergen). We need to add a new category/term to the list—co-location. FERC has just fired off a directive to PJM Interconnection, the country’s largest electric grid operator (covering PA, WV, and OH, among other states), asking PJM to explain how it handles co-location. This increasingly popular AI data center electricity arrangement allows the computer warehouses to connect directly to power plants. FERC Approves Increased Production at VG’s Plaquemines LNG

    February 21, 2025February 21, 2025

At the end of December, Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG export facility officially shipped its first cargo…to Germany (see Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG Ships First Cargo to Germany). Unfortunately for Venture Global’s contracted customers, they will have to wait to receive their legally contracted shipments. Venture Global has admitted it will (as it has with its Calcasieu Pass facility) pretend the Plaquemines LNG is not “commercially ready” for 2-3 years, allowing the company to cream the market and make more money for the first couple of years (see Plaquemines LNG Coming Online, Will Hose Customers for 2 Years). It’s a disgusting business practice. However, customers are still willing to sign up knowing how the company operates. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has just approved a request by Venture Global to increase the Plaquemines plant production capacity by another 13%. Mass. Gov. Healey in Trouble re High Energy Prices She Created

    February 21, 2025February 21, 2025

For years, we’ve warned you about the potential for insanely high natural gas costs and even blackouts in New England. We’ve written post after post after post about Massachusetts then-Attorney General (now Governor) Maura Healey, a radical leftist who has consistently blocked new pipeline projects that would deliver cheap, clean, abundant Marcellus gas to her state (see our Healey stories here). With the ongoing cold snap in the northeast, the demand for natural gas is through the roof in Massachusetts. Demand drives the price through the roof. This is a problem of Healey’s own making, yet she demanded the state Department of Public Utilities (DPU) “immediately” do something to lower gas bills for residents. The DPU complied… Read More “Mass. Gov. Healey in Trouble re High Energy Prices She Created”

Austrian Co. Claims Projects Use 100% Hydrogen for Powergen

    February 21, 2025February 21, 2025

An Austrian-based company claims its hydrogen-to-power projects are demonstrating the viability of using hydrogen gas engines, with some installations in Germany, the Netherlands, and South Korea using 100% hydrogen. At a company-hosted event, representatives discussed how natural gas-fired plants are adaptable for future hydrogen conversion and detailed the technical modifications required to support this energy transition. There is at least one gas-fired power plant in the Marcellus/Utica experimenting with blending hydrogen with natgas, the Long Ridge Energy Terminal in Monroe County, OH, (see OH Long Ridge Energy Power to Blend Hydrogen with Utica Gas).
