Weekly Shale Drilling Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV: Aug 3-7

Permits to drill new shale wells in the Keystone State (Pennsylvania) remain brisk. Two weeks ago PA issued 32 new permits. Last week PA issued another 30 permits. That’s 62 new permits in two weeks! Ohio issued no new shale drilling permits last week (disappointingly), and West Virginia issued six new permits last week.

Weekly Shale Drilling Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV: July 27-31

Three weeks ago there were 27 new permits issued in Pennsylvania for shale drilling. Two weeks ago there were only three new PA permits issued. But over the past week, from July 27-31, PA permits issued for drilling new wells jumped to 32! New permits issued in Ohio last week were six, and two new permits were issued in West Virginia.

Weekly Shale Drilling Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV: July 20-24

Two weeks ago there were 27 new permits issued in Pennsylvania for shale drilling. Last week, July 20-24, there were only 3 new PA permits. Ouch. Finally, after several weeks of no shale permits in Ohio, the Buckeye State issued 8 new shale permits–all for the same well pad. In West Virginia, there were 3 new shale drilling permits (all for the same well pad) issued last week. The permits in PA were issued in Bradford, Susquehanna, and Washington counties. The OH permits were issued in Harrison County. The WV permits were issued in Wetzel County. There is no doubt drilling has greatly slowed throughout the M-U. Weekly Shale Drilling Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV: July 13-17

There were 27 (!) new permits issued in Pennsylvania for shale drilling July 13-17. There were, once again, no new permits issued in Ohio. What’s up in Ohio? Is nobody filing new permit requests? Or does the ODNR have a backlog of unprocessed requests? There were 7 new permits issued in West Virginia for shale drilling last week. In PA, new permits were issued in Armstrong, Bradford, Greene, Lycoming, Susquehanna, and Westmoreland Counties. In WV all 7 permits were issued for the same well pad in Wetzel County.

Weekly Shale Drilling Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV for Jun 8-12

The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) finally restarted issuing permits for Utica drilling last week after a month-long drought of not issuing any new permits. There were 10 new permits issued in PA for shale drilling June 8-12. There were 6 new permits issued in OH for shale drilling during the same time period. There were no new permits issued in WV for shale drilling last week.

Weekly Shale Permits Issued for PA, WV (Not OH) Jun 1-5

Lots of permitting activity to drill new shale wells last week in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia. There were 27 new permits issued in PA for June 1-5. There were 8 new permits issued in WV for the same time period. The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) database appears to be working–we queried it for a variety of dates. The last date showing permits was for the week of May 4-8. Since that time no new Utica permits have been issued–or at least none have been recorded in the database. We’ll keep monitoring.

Weekly Shale Permits Issued for PA, WV (Not OH) May 25-29

There were 7 new permits issued in PA for May 25-29. There were no new permits issued in WV for the same time period. The Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) database is still down. MDN contacted ODNR today and was told by a spokesman, “The Division [of Oil and Gas Management] hopes to be able to resume permitting activities this week.” Does that mean no new Utica permits are being issued at this time?

Weekly Shale Permits Issued for PA, WV (but Not OH)

No sooner had we started producing weekly new shale permits issued reports than the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR) website experienced some sort of catastrophic failure. While portions of the site have now returned, they still do not have the database reconnected that delivers weekly updates for new permits. We decided we could not wait any longer on ODNR to get their act together. Below are weekly reports detailing the names and locations for each new permit issued in both PA and WV for the weeks of May 11-15, and May 18-22.

Weekly Shale Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV – May 4-8

The weekly new permits issued report below is delayed, showing permits issued for two weeks ago, from May 4-8. The reason for the delay is a website outage for the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources (ODNR). In fact, ODNR’s site is still down but the good folks at the agency provided MDN the numbers by running a custom report. There is still no forecast for when ODNR’s site will be back online. For the week of May 4-8, PA had 20 new permits, OH had 3 new permits, and WV had 2 new permits.

After positive feedback from our inaugural weekly drilling permits report last week (see MDN New Feature: Weekly Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV), MDN has decided to proceed with a weekly “permits issued” report. Below are permits issued last week for new shale well drilling in PA (23 new permits), and OH (7 new permits). There were no new permits issued in WV last week.

MDN New Feature: Weekly Permits Issued for PA, OH, WV

MDN is floating a potential new feature. We’d like your feedback. Below are lists of new shale drilling permits issued for the past four weeks for each state: Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Permits issued are a strong indicator of future drilling activity. Typically it is a matter of weeks to perhaps a month or two after a new permit is issued when a driller begins work on a new well. Permits are one of the best ways of predicting future drilling activity.
