The Marcellus/Utica region received a combined 19 new drilling permits last week, Mar. 23 – 29, up 8 from the 11 permits issued two weeks ago. Pennsylvania issued 4 of the permits. Ohio issued no new permits. And, West Virginia issued 15 new permits last week. The drillers who received new permits last week included EQT, Expand Energy, and Range Resources. The Marcellus/Utica region received a combined 17 new drilling permits last week, Feb. 16 – 22, way down (by 26) from the 43 permits issued two weeks ago. To be fair, 43 permits was one of the highest in recent months, so a slide was expected. What wasn’t expected was that Pennsylvania issued just a single (1) new permit. Ohio issued 8 permits, and West Virginia issued 8 as well. The Marcellus/Utica region received a combined 43 new drilling permits last week, Feb. 9 – 15, up 19 from the permits issued two weeks ago. The most recent high in permits (going back at least a year) occurred during the first week of December, when 60 new permits were issued (see 60 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Dec 1 – 7). A week with 43 permits is also significant, indicating an increase in drilling activity. Pennsylvania issued 25 new permits, Ohio issued 7, and West Virginia issued 11. A return to normalcy last week for permits issued to drill new shale wells in the Marcellus/Utica. Two weeks ago, we reported that just one new permit was issued (see M-U Issues Just One New Permit Last Week, Dec 29 – Jan 4). As promised, we double-checked to be sure there wasn’t a lag in posting permits by the various environmental agencies. There were no new permits (except the one) for two weeks ago. As for last week, Jan. 5 – 11, Pennsylvania issued 12 new permits, Ohio issued 2, and West Virginia issued 7. M-U Issues Just One New Permit Last Week, Dec 29 – Jan 4

It hardly seems worthy of a post to update you on new permits to drill in the Marcellus/Utica when just one permit was issued. We suppose there may be a lag at the various environmental agencies that issue permits, but maybe not. The sole permit issued last week was in Washington County, PA, to Rice Drilling (aka EQT). Volatility is the watchword for new permits in the Marcellus/Utica. Three weeks ago, the combined count between Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia was a measly 8 new permits (see 8 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 24 – 30). Two weeks ago, the number soared to the highest we’ve seen for a single week in a long time, maybe ever, at 60 new permits (see 60 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Dec 1 – 7). Last week?
