NY’s Anti-Drillers Attempt Smear of Geologists Consulting for DEC

How does one convey the lunacy of the anti-drilling position in New York State? Latest example: The NY Dept. of Environment Conservation (DEC) has hired two geologists as consultants to evaluate earthquake risks associated with fracking (yes we know, there is no earthquake risk, but humor us for a bit). In a coordinated attack, anti-drillers say that because the two geologists have also done consulting assignments for nasty, evil drilling companies, they’re tainted. Damaged goods. Shills and tools of the drilling industry. Not to be trusted. Even though they’ve also done consulting work for environmentalist (anti-drilling) organizations. Doesn’t matter.

Such is how far anti-drillers have sunk in their campaign of smears and lies to try and prevent the miracle of hydraulic fracturing—which is already being done in NY in vertical conventional wells and has been for decades—from happening in the state for horizontal shale wells too.

NY Comptroller Bullies Cabot O&G over Frack Fluid Disclosure

Being the sole person in charge of a pot of investments worth $150 billion is an awesome responsibility—and invests that person with an enormous amount of power. Power which can (and is) abused. New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is the sole person in charge of the New York State Common Retirement Fund and he regularly throws his weight around with the companies the fund invests in to strong-arm them into doing things they typically don’t want to do. Call it bullying (because that’s what it is).

The latest example: DiNapoli, himself an anti-driller, is crowing that he forced Cabot Oil & Gas, one of the companies the Fund invests in ($35.8 million), to “publicly disclose its policy and procedures for eliminating or minimizing the use of toxic substances in its hydraulic fracturing fluids.” Never mind that Cabot already lists the components of its fracking fluids in the FracFocus.org Chemical Disclosure Registry. Let’s not let facts get in the way of a good PR campaign.

Judge Tosses Out Lawsuit Against Spectra NYC Pipeline Project

Spectra Energy continues to battle environmental extremists who want nothing to do with more natural gas (especially “filthy” shale gas) coming into New York City, even though NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls more natural gas “vital” to the city. Spectra has had to battle nutty protesters that strip down (see NYC Pipeline Protesters Get Naked, Paint Themselves Green), and even protesters who don’t tell themselves they’re about to break the law (see Nutjob Protester Stops NYC Pipeline Construction for 2 Hours).

The protesters and their more adult-acting supporters took Spectra to court in New York State to stop the 16-mile pipeline from New Jersey to New York City from being built. A judge has just tossed the lawsuit telling the protesters, “wrong court”…

Town of Westmoreland, NY Bans Fracking

We happen to think a little editorializing, and having some fun along the way, is not only a good thing to do—it’s the honest thing to do. We don’t cover up our opinions in our reporting of the news. Ongoing Saga of 4th Graders Brainwashed Against Fracking

A few weeks ago MDN told you about 44 fourth graders at Maple Hill Elementary School in Middletown (Sullivan County), NY who were given an assignment to write an argumentative paper about fracking, and shazam! Every single one of them wrote against the practice (see Middletown 4th Graders Brainwashed by Teachers Against Fracking).

Apparently the teacher who required the assignment, and the reporter who was so impressed (hoodwinked?) that every single student individually and independently came to an anti-fracking conclusion, must have gotten a fair bit of blowback from the original story because the reporter has just penned a new story seeking to justify the assignment and the original story. The new article concludes with an interesting revelation about the teacher…

PA DEP Pushes Back: We Did NOT Undercount Wells for Impact Fee

A newly-minted Ph.D. from Penn State, Joel Gehman, got his first teaching job last year as an assistant business professor at the University of Alberta in Canada. He wasted no time in addressing the issue of “publish or perish” in academe. In May of 2012, even before he began his official duties at UA, he co-authored and published a paper titled, “Fracking Patents: The Emergence of Patents as Information Containment Tools in Shale Drilling.” The title itself tells you about Dr. Gehman’s proclivities when it comes to the issue of fracking. This month Dr. Gehman is back as lead author of a new paper published in the journal Environmental Practice titled, “An Analysis of Unconventional Gas Well Reporting under Pennsylvania’s Act 13 of 2012.”

Dr. Gehman’s new paper makes the strong claim that the DEP did not exploit loopholes in the new Act 13 law to drain every last penny they could via the new impact fee/tax on oil and gas wells, thereby leaving up to $303 million uncollected (see our story Did PA DEP Undercount Act 13 Wells & Forfeit $303M in Revenue?). Michael Krancer, Sec. of the DEP, sent a letter to Gehman on Tuesday with some pretty strong claims of his own…

Controversy Continues Over PA DEP Water Testing Near Frack Sites

In November, MDN told you about a new controversy that began when PA State Rep. Jesse White (Democrat from the Pittsburgh area) claimed the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection was knowingly covering up water well testing data that may “prove” fracking activities in some cases are contaminating groundwater supplies (see PA DEP Accused of Skewing Water Tests from Wells Near Drilling). The DEP immediately responded that White and those claiming there’s a cover-up are wrong. The Marcellus Shale Coalition also jumped into the debate to shine a light on White’s anti-drilling tendencies (see MSC Responds to Allegations PA DEP Skews Drilling Water Tests). It does appear White has an ongoing blood feud with Range Resources, but in fairness, he contacted MDN to assert he is not anti-drilling.

The latest round in this controversy comes from an article that appears in the Beaver County Times on Tuesday. The article is perhaps the best we’ve seen that outlines what the controversy involves (although the article tends to the anti- side). In brief, it’s all about “Suite Codes” and whether or not the DEP intentionally did not order the appropriate tests in some cases of suspected water contamination—and in other cases did not report back full results from tests done. Anti-Drilling Fervor Heats Up in Kent, OH

Anti-drillers in and around Kent, Ohio have some helpful suggestions for elected officials in Kent: ban fracking. And if you can’t ban it, make zoning so onerous that the practical effect would be to ban it. PA Auditor General Targets State’s Marcellus Drilling Industry

Looney Toons Anti-Fracking Celebrities Visit Montrose, PA

Yesterday John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon, along with reliably left movie star Susan Sarandon, boarded a Mercedes tour bus in New York City (burning gobs of diesel, a hated fossil fuel) and headed to the Montrose area of northeastern PA to “tour” drilling and compressor plant sites, visit with the commoners, and make pretentious pronouncements about how gas drilling is killing everyone and everything.

Ono and Lennon, in a bid to boost their non-existent public profiles, started a group last year called “Artists Against Fracking,” which is really kind of funny. Neither Ono nor Lennon can hold a tune in a bucket (see this hysterically funny video of them singing a song about fracking). But perhaps the “art” in “artists” comes from the pornography the 79 year-old Ono creates (see this story about her 2012 “fashion line for men”).

Anti-Fracking Group Mails Propaganda Brochure to 190K NYers

Catskill Citizens for Safe Energy is mailing an anti-fracking brochure (killing precious trees from the Catskills to provide the paper, no doubt) to 190,000 residents throughout the Southern Tier area of New York—a region that desperately wants and needs drilling, and the area that will see drilling when/if the current moratorium is lifted. The brochure is pure propaganda and full of outright lies, but hey, this is still Ameritopia where the First Amendment is alive and well, for people on the left anyway.

Maryland Gov Finally Allocates Money for Fracking Study in Budget

The stumbling, bumbling governor of Maryland, Socialist/Democrat Martin O’Malley, finally figured out that if the fracking study he himself ordered back in 2011 is ever going to get done by 2014, he’ll need to find money in the budget to do it. So in a blinding acknowledgement of the obvious, he included $1.5 million in the proposed budget he delivered to the legislature yesterday.

Of course, $1.5 million in Maryland is a rounding error in the state budget, but until now anti-drillers in the state have used lack of funding for the study as a convenient excuse to continue a moratorium on drilling. Look for the state’s Dems to neuter out the $1.5 million and then throw up their hands and say “no funding, no study, no drilling.” Typical.

Maryland Shale Drilling Moratorium to be Debated in Legislature

Was PA Gov. Tom Corbett Bribed by Fracking Waste Hauler?

In typical fashion, anti-drillers have brought out the long knives for pro-drilling PA Gov. Tom Corbett. The latest attempt to try and influence next year’s election cycle is brought to you by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

This story paints the picture that a wealthy political donor whose company hauls drill cuttings got special treatment from the (then) incoming Corbett and the state Dept. of Environmental Protection in early 2011 in return for a $100,000 political donation. That is, the Inquirer says, in so many words, that Corbett was bribed. Was he?
