Weekly Shale Drilling Permits for PA, OH, WV: Apr 19-23
All three M-U states received permits to drill new shale wells last week. Pennsylvania received a 6 new permits, most of them in the southwestern part of the state. Ohio received 4 new permits last week, all of them for Ascent Resources on the same Guernsey County pad. And West Virginia received 6 new permits split between CNX Resources and Northeast Natural Energy, all in one county: Monongalia.

All three M-U states received permits to drill new shale wells last week. Pennsylvania received a whopping 17 new permits spread across various counties and drillers. Ohio received just 2 new permits last week, both for Ascent Resources on the same pad. And West Virginia received a big 12 new permits split between two drillers: Antero Resources and Tug Hill Operating.

This is a cautionary tale that highlights what we have preached over the years. From some of our earliest posts here on MDN, we have cautioned landowners (and rights owners) to treat the lease signing bonuses and royalties they receive in the Marcellus/Utica as an investment and not spend all the money as it comes in on the assumption it will always be there. We have an example of what happens if you spend it as soon as you get it: Greene County, PA.
Coincidentally, a second dehydration unit fire occurred early Saturday morning, also in Pennsylvania, but this second fire occurred across the state in southwest PA. Our lead story today is about a dehydration unit fire at a well pad in Lycoming County (see Two-Alarm Fire at Alta Resources Well Pad in Lycoming County, PA). The second fire happened at a dehydration unit at a compressor station in Greene County owned and operated by Equitrans Midstream.
