FERC Approves Williams Leidy Southeast Project in PA/NJ

Since January 2013, Williams has been working on a project called Leidy Southeast that will create several new loops in northeast Pennsylvania and in New Jersey (including new compressor stations) to bump up the capacity of the Williams Transco interstate gas pipeline (see Williams Takes Next Step with Transco Leidy Pipeline Expansion). In August, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) said there would be no significant impacts to the environment, a good sign that the project would get the green light (see FERC Says “No Significant Impact” from Leidy Southeast Pipeline). Yet Another Williams Transco Expansion: Western Marcellus Project

Pipeline (infrastructure) projects keep getting announced fast and furiously–we can hardly keep up! Williams has announced yet another upgrade to their Transco Pipeline–this one called the Western Marcellus Pipeline Project. We get details about the new project from an open season announcement from Williams posted yesterday. The Transco is one of the country’s largest interstate natural gas pipelines–a 10,200-mile pipeline system that extends from South Texas to New York City. In February Williams announced an $2.1 billion expansion of the Transco to carry PA Marcellus gas to the Eastern seaboard, what they call the Atlantic Sunrise project (see Williams Plans $2.1B Transco Pipeline Expansion, 100% Sold Already). Last week we told you about another expansion of the Transco, called Diamond East, that will beef up capacity on the Transco from Lycoming and Luzerne counties in northeast PA all the way to Mercer County, NJ, a $500-$800 million project (see Williams to Expand Transco Pipeline Again, More Marcellus to NE). PA Gov Corbett Makes Political U-Turn on Pipeline Project

Last week Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett waded into the thorny issue of whether or not the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) should approve the Williams Tranco pipeline expansion project. Dubbed the Atlantic Sunrise project, the $3 billion project which reaches far beyond just PA, would carry PA Marcellus Shale gas to the East Coast and to southern states (see Williams Open House Sheds more Light on Transco Atlantic Sunrise). Last week Corbett sent a letter to FERC asking the feds to look carefully at the Atlantic Sunrise expansion project because he’s hearing a lot of noise from voters about it. He also requested FERC to zoom out and look at the big picture–consider all of the proposed pipeline projects for PA and whether as a whole it makes sense–and not just look at each project individually…

Williams to Expand Transco Pipeline Again, More Marcellus to NE

There’s no doubt that Williams is a major midstream player in the Marcellus and Utica Shale. Williams is in the process of growing–massively–by purchasing Access Midstream (see Big News: Williams Partners Buying Access Midstream for $6B). Williams is also the owner of the Transcontinental (or Transco) pipeline, a 10,200-mile pipeline system, extending from South Texas to New York City. Williams wants to further expand the Transco with it’s Atlantic Sunrise project to bring Marcellus gas to the northeast and southern states (see Williams Plans $2.1B Transco Pipeline Expansion, 100% Sold Already). Yesterday Williams announced an open season (period of time when new customers can sign up) for yet a another expansion of the Transco, this time to bring more Marcellus Shale gas to places like New Jersey and New York City. FERC Says “No Significant Impact” from Leidy Southeast Pipeline

Williams is one very important step closer to beginning construction–this fall–on their Transco Leidy Southeast Expansion project. Last fall Williams filed an official application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for permission to proceed with the project, a $610 million project designed to increase the Transco pipeline’s capacity by 525,000 decatherms per day–enough natural gas to serve 2 million homes (see Williams Takes Next Step with Transco Leidy Pipeline Expansion). The expansion will pipe cheap, abundant NEPA Marcellus Shale gas to points from New York City to the southeastern U.S. The project includes construction of approximately 30 miles of additional pipe segments, called loops, in PA and NJ, in addition to modifying some existing compressor stations and valve sites. Lancaster, PA Business Adds Pipeline Manufacturing Facility

Don’t tell the anti-drillers in Lancaster, PA (and nearby Lebanon, PA), but the prospect of a new pipeline coming through that area, along with increased drilling in the Marcellus, is helping to drive the expansion of a Lancaster business. Goodhart Sons Inc., an industrial fabricator in Lancaster announced last week the development of a new pipe fabrication facility at their Lancaster, PA headquarters. Pipeline will Violate “Virgin” Land, Cross “Prized Farmland” (Gag)

Did you know that if you build a natural gas pipeline through an area where previously there wasn’t a pipeline, it’s the equivalent to violating a virgin? And if the ground happens to be farm fields, the gas flowing through the pipeline would be “coursing” through that line (almost recklessly) and that farm fields are magically converted to be “most prized farmland”? Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline Will Get Environmental Impact Statement

Last week regulators at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) announced they will perform a full blown environmental impact statement (EIS) on Williams’ proposed $3 billion Atlantic Sunrise Expansion pipeline project that will expand the Transco pipeline in Pennsylvania in order to feed cheap, abundant Marcellus Shale gas into a pipeline running to southern states. Chains & Old Ladies: Kinky Protest Talk in Lancaster County, PA

Lawsuits Next Act for Anti-Pipeline Group in Lebanon County, PA?

The hippie protesters of Lebanon Pipeline Awareness are feeling positively rejuvenated. They haven’t had this much fun since the 1960s. The anti-fossil fuel group was formed in Lebanon County, PA to oppose a new 27-mile pipeline Williams plans to build as part of its Atlantic Sunrise Project (see Williams Plans $2.1B Transco Pipeline Expansion, 100% Sold Already). Lebanon Pipeline Awareness can’t get more than 50 people to attend their meetings, and when they do show up, they have to be handed talking points so they know what to say (see Lebanon, PA Group Coaches Blind Followers to Oppose Pipeline). When denied a public forum at a recent Williams open house on the proposed pipeline, the Lebanon protesters sat on the floor and stomped their feet like the babies they are (see Williams’ Smart Open House in Lebanon County Confounds Antis). Atlantic Sunrise Changes Course in Lancaster County, PA

Once again anti-drillers who were denied the chance to bleat and blat before a microphone behaved like the adult babies they are–by staging a “sit in” and chanting at an open house hosted by Williams to talk to landowners and others about the much-needed and excellent Atlantic Sunrise Expansion pipeline project. This particular misbehaving group was composed of anti-drillers and hippies from Lancaster County, PA, not dissimilar (maybe some of them the same) as those from neighboring Lebanon County (see Lebanon, PA Group Coaches Blind Followers to Oppose Pipeline). When denied a public forum to act like asses, anti-drillers go ahead and make asses of themselves anyway. And that’s just what a group calling themselves Lancaster Against Pipeline did Wednesday night. Williams’ Smart Open House in Lebanon County Confounds Antis

Anti-drillers are so predictable. When they’re denied a public forum where they can squeal and moan and put on a “look at me” show, they get all testy. Which is why the way Williams conducts their public open houses is so utterly brilliant. Instead of hosting the typical “3 people on the stage addressing the crowd” followed by an open microphone where anti-drilling zombies get up to read their talking points, Williams sends about 75 representatives to a local school or fire house, rolls out miles of maps, and talks one-on-one with residents–to address specific questions and concerns. That’s the way they did it last night at the Annville-Cleona High School (Lebanon County, PA) with the Atlantic Sunrise Expansion project. Lebanon, PA Group Coaches Blind Followers to Oppose Pipeline

The pattern endlessly repeats itself. A handful of people with an irrational hatred of fossil fuels turn their hatred on anything related to fossil fuels–like a much needed pipeline. Those same people can’t use objective evidence to support their views–they can’t even openly admit what motivates them for fear that they’ll lose support. So they begin a campaign to spread lies (i.e. “talking points”) to mind-numbed robots who can’t think for themselves. They pack a public meeting and all pretty much say the same thing–endlessly regurgitating the talking points handed to them. Many of them, MDN has observed, are old hippies–men bald on top with gray ponytails in the back. You laugh–but it’s true! They also enlist kindred spirits in young people who are frankly inexperienced and too stupid to know better. That pattern is repeating itself once again–this time in Lebanon County, PA…

Williams Open House Sheds more Light on Transco Atlantic Sunrise

On Tuesday night Williams held the first of 10 open houses (this one in Luzerne County) on their roadshow to discuss the proposed Atlantic Sunrise Project includes new and reversed pipeline flows for the mighty Transco (see Williams Plans $2.1B Transco Pipeline Expansion, 100% Sold Already). The Transco, built 50 years ago, as always brought gas from the southwest to the northeast. Under Williams’ plan, new pipes will carry gas to the northeast/New England markets, but the vast majority of the existing pipeline will become bidirectional–able to flow gas in either direction–carrying cheap Marcellus Shale gas to southern markets…

Williams Briefs Luzerne Cty Officials on Transco Atlantic Sunrise

In February Williams announced a $2.1 billion expansion to their Transco natural gas pipeline (see Williams Plans $2.1B Transco Pipeline Expansion, 100% Sold Already). The name of the expansion project is Atlantic Sunrise and if it stays on schedule it will be built starting 2016 and go live in 2017. It aims to, for the first time ever (for the Transco), flow gas from north to south–delivering Marcellus Shale gas to southern markets. The project will expand the Transco pipeline’s capacity by some 20%–the “largest expansion that we’ve done in the Transco system’s history” according to Williams.

Which is all good news–except right on cue NIMBYs (not in my back yard) have already cropped up to oppose it–at least in Lebanon County, PA (see Lebanon Opposition to Williams Transco Pipeline Sunrise Expansion). Williams briefed a a Luzerne County, PA Council committee meeting last night. Seems the folks in Luzerne are a bit more open-minded about the possibilities.
