Marietta Tries 2nd Time to Lease City Land for Utica Drilling

The City of Marietta, OH has several parcels of land they’re interested in leasing for Utica gas drilling: (1) Gunlock Park, behind the Walmart complex off Pike Streeet, (2) city-owned land along Goose Run Road in Marietta Township, (3) city garage property off Alderman Street, and (4) Buckeye Park off Acme and Greene Streets, and (5) the Kroger swap (i.e. “wetlands”) off Acme Street. All five locations total 95 acres. MDN reported that because city council snoozed, they lost out on an earlier opportunity to lease the Gunlock Park and Goose Run properties (35 acres) back in May (see Delay in Leasing City-Owned Land Costs Marietta, OH Big $). The city will run a second advertisement (legal requirement) to lease all parcels, and once again, they may have some interest. If they don’t botch it this time…

Utica Shale Impressive Debut in EIA Drilling Productivity Report

Yesterday the Utica Shale came roaring in as the newest member play of the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR). As we’ve often remarked in the past, the DPR is our favorite report from our favorite government agency–the EIA. Yesterday marked the first appearance of the Utica/Point Pleasant in the monthly DPR and wow, what an entrance! The Utica is already producing nearly as much natural gas as the Bakken Shale, although it produces just a tiny fraction of the oil produced in the Bakken. However, the Utica, producing an average 37,000 barrels of oil per day has nearly caught the oil production of the Marcellus, at 50,000 barrels per day. And when you consider new production (first 30 days a well goes online), the Utica far outstrips the Marcellus, Haynesville and even the Permian for oil production! Cardinal Gas Courts S Koreans to Invest in Utica JV

Cardinal Gas Services is a midstream company (pipelines and processing plants) concentrating on the Ohio Utica Shale. Cardinal is actually a joint venture between Access Midstream (formerly Chesapeake Midstream, now being bought by Williams), the U.S. subsidiary of French driller Total, and EnerVest Energy Partners. McClendon Invests in New Utica Pipeline Project, JV with Regency

It was only in June, less than two months ago, that MDN brought you the news that it sure seems like Aubrey McClendon is building a new company that looks a lot like the first company he built, Chesapeake Energy (see Aubrey McClendon Gets Back into the Midstream Business). McClendon is not only high on Utica and Marcellus drilling with his newly formed American Energy Partners company, he’s also high on building the pipelines needed to conduct the gas out of the borehole. His new midstream division was set up to work on such projects. And less than two months later, we have the first of those projects. Summit Midstream 2Q14: Marcellus Rockets to #2 Operation

Summit Midstream is a Dallas, TX-based company with growing operations in the heart of the Marcellus and Utica Shale. Summit’s first foray into the Marcellus was when they purchased Mountaineer Midstream–a pipeline gathering system in Doddridge County, WV–from MarkWest back in June 2013 (see MarkWest Sells Doddridge County, WV Pipeline System to Raise Cash). Summit’s second foray, this time in the Utica, was last December when the company bought out Gulfstream’s interest in Ohio Gathering (see Summit Midstream Buys Gulfport’s Interest in Ohio Gathering). The revenue they’re generating from those purchases has helped improve Summit’s bottom line: earnings increased 30.5% over the same period last year…

Utica Shale Academy Gets Enough Students to Open, Help from TX Co

Good news for the Utica Shale Academy. The Academy is slated to open its doors on August 19–just two weeks away. At last check (in June) they only had 10 students signed up (see Utica Shale Academy Having Tough Time Finding Students). They need 25 to begin operating. As of last Friday they’re up to 24–so looks like it’s a go. Gulfport Cuts Deal with Competitor Rice Energy to Build Pipeline

An interesting announcement from Gulfport Energy earlier this week. The company issued a “midstream update” and a production numbers for 2Q14 going back one year. What’s interesting is that Gulfport has cut midstream (i.e. pipeline) deals to get its production out of the Utica Shale basin in eastern Ohio. One deal is with Rice Energy, a competitor who also drills in the Utica. Rice will construct and operate gathering pipelines for Gulfport in several townships in Belmont County, OH. (Interesting that Rice is becoming a midstream company as well as a driller.) EIA Adds Utica to Drilling Prod. Report – Looks Like Eagle Ford!

We’re not sure how we missed this spot of important news, but last Friday our favorite government agency–the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)–announced they are adding another shale play to our favorite report–the Drilling Productivity Report (DPR). The new shale play being added as of the August DPR? The Utica! The brains at EIA (and we mean that respectfully, they really are brainiacs) announced on their website last week that the Utica looks an awful lot like the Eagle Ford in its early development. That’s high praise indeed. Engineering Services Firm “Quietly” Opens Utica Office in SE Ohio

Fenstermaker, an environmental engineering and consulting firm with 300 employees companywide in the U.S., says they “quietly” opened their latest branch office in Cambridge, OH in March in order to better serve their customers in the Utica Shale. They’re no-so-quietly trumpeting their presence now. Although the company’s announcement doesn’t say how many are employed at the new location, it does say Jarrod Hughes, a Project Manager experienced in both field and office supervision, has stepped into the role of Northeast Operations Leader. Antero Resources: Marcellus/Utica Program Going Gangbusters

Antero Resources, now with 488,000 acres of leased land in the Marcellus/Utica region, issued a very impressive update yesterday. According to the update, Antero is running 15 drilling rigs in the Marcellus and 5 rigs in the Utica. Some 26% of their acreage is now classified as “proved reserves.” Those proven reserves have risen by 19%–to 9.1 trillion cubic feet (13% liquids) from year-end 2013 numbers. Wow! They drilled and completed 22 Utica wells (added them to proved developed reserves) in the first six months of 2014. Those wells include: 4 rich gas (1100-1200 Btu), 2 highly-rich gas (1200 to 1225 Btu), 3 highly-rich gas/condensate (1225 to 1250 Btu) and 13 condensate (1250 to 1300 Btu) wells. CONSOL Update: Gas Production Up 34%, New Utica Wells Online

CONSOL Energy reports today results for a number of their Utica wells in Noble County, OH. Their “much anticipated” 3-well NBL19 pad went online last week and initial production for each of the three wells averaged 23 million cubic feet per day or more–very impressive indeed! A CONSOL well near the NBL 19, the NBL16A, is averaging 12 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. However, the 16A is also producing 768 barrels of oil per day! MWCD Reinvesting $300M of Utica Shale Revenue over Next 10 Yrs

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) covers more than 8,000 square miles of rivers, reservoirs and creeks that drain into the Muskingum River. It is the largest wholly contained watershed in the state of Ohio, covering about 20% of the state. MWCD owns 54,000 acres of land. Early in the Utica Shale boom in Ohio the MWCD was scared off from participating (see Muskingum Watershed Reverses Decision to Sell Water to Drillers). But it wasn’t long before the MWCD board found their resolve and started to not only sell water for Utica fracking, they started leasing land like crazy (see Antero Pays $15K/Acre, 20% Royalties for MWCD Piedmont Lake Lease). All of those water sales and leases for drilling are now paying off for MWCD rate payers and indeed for all Ohioans…
