MPLX to Build New Harmon Creek III Gas Processing in PA Marcellus

In late 2015, MPLX (i.e., Marathon Petroleum) bought out and merged in the Utica Shale’s premier midstream company, MarkWest Energy, for $15 billion (see MarkWest Energy Investors/Unitholders Approve Merger with Marathon). The “new” MarkWest, aka MPLX, plays on a much larger stage now, including ownership and operation of major assets in the Permian Basin and the Bakken Shale, in addition to the Marcellus/Utica. Yesterday, MPLX issued its third quarter 2024 update with some exciting news for the Marcellus: MPLX will add a 300 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day) processing plant and 40,000 bpd (barrels per day) de-ethanizer to its Harmon Creek facility in southwestern Pennsylvania (Smith Township, Washington County). CEO of PA Fracking Company Says Frackers Idle, Hitting Rock Bottom

Dan Doyle is president of Reliance Well Services, a hydraulic fracturing (oilfield services, or OFS) company established in 2008 and based in Pennsylvania. Reliance works throughout the Appalachian and Illinois Basins. In an article published by Doyle on the OilPrice.com website, he says low natural gas prices, high interest rates, and reallocation of capital have led to a slump in demand for oilfield services like those offered by his company. Doyle said, “Frac’ers never want to admit that they’re idle, but we’re idle.” Read More “CEO of PA Fracking Company Says Frackers Idle, Hitting Rock Bottom”

8 Mo. After NY Legislature Passed CO2 Frack Ban, Gov Has Not Signed

Nearly eight months ago, the New York Senate passed a bill the Assembly had previously passed to ban the use of carbon dioxide in shale drilling (so-called “CO2 fracking”). Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul, a reliable anti-fossil fueler, still has not signed the bill into law. What the heck is going on? Why is she missing in action? We’ve written about this a few times, beginning two months after the bill was passed (see our NY CO2 fracking stories here). No matter why she hasn’t yet signed the bill, the longer it goes unsigned, the better chance we who live in NY have of trying to persuade Hochul not to sign it. We hesitate to offer any hope, but while there’s still time, there’s hope, however small it may be. Read More “8 Mo. After NY Legislature Passed CO2 Frack Ban, Gov Has Not Signed”

Biden-Harris DOJ Asks Fed Court to Reinstate DOE’s LNG “Pause”

One of the reasons Kamala Harris lost (and lost big) is a complete tone deafness on energy issues, including the “pause” she and her boss put on approving new LNG export requests all the way back in January (see White House Makes it Official – Biden Declares War on LNG Exports). Biden announced he would “pause” any approvals for new LNG export plants, with over a dozen requests in the pipeline, for at least one year while his people fart around pretending to figure out how to measure global warming as a new consideration for whether or not to approve projects. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm (can’t wait to see her gone!) said the “pause” would be over and done no later than January 2025. It certainly will be gone in January, Ms. Granholm! But, back to how the Biden-Harris administration is completely tone-deaf on this issue… Read More “Biden-Harris DOJ Asks Fed Court to Reinstate DOE’s LNG “Pause””

FERC Debates Data Centers, the Grid, and Power Generation

In a very short period of time, data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) appeared on the radar as very large potential customers for natural gas due to their need for power. Out of the blue, we began to read about drillers and pipeline companies talking with potential data center customers about flowing Marcellus/Utica molecules to their operations so they can generate their own electricity (for example, see TC Energy in Advanced Talks to Build Pipes Direct to Data Centers). But wait a minute. Not so fast. Although data centers may *want* to generate their own power, or sometimes pay a vendor to do it for them, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will have something to say about these facilities and how they connect to the existing power grid. AI/Data Center Boom Not Only Good for Midstream but Turbine Makers

Mitsubishi gas turbine

Speaking of data centers and AI (artificial intelligence), natural gas drillers and pipeline companies are not the only beneficiaries of the huge power requirements needed by these monsters. The companies that manufacture turbines for gas-fired power plants are seeing a spike in demand. Mitsubishi Power Ltd., one of those manufacturers, sees the world ordering an eye-popping 50% more gas turbines annually through 2026, compared with the past three years, driven in large part by data center growth. Mitsubishi is the #1 provider of gas turbines. The company says that globally, there will be 60 gigawatts worth of equipment orders every year from 2024 through 2026, which is up from an average annual capacity of 40 gigawatts sold between 2021 and 2023. Fossil Fuel Energy Won 2024 Election; Mainstream Media Replaced

Wow! What a night!! We’re so proud of Pennsylvania regarding the election. Of course, the big story of the night was PA going for Trump. But there’s much more to the PA story. Once again, Republicans have taken a majority in the State Senate. The PA House looks to us like it’s dead even right now and will take another day or two to tabulate the outstanding votes and perhaps to recount several races. There’s a decent chance Republicans will claim a PA House majority. Conservative Republicans swept the statewide offices. In the Attorney General race, Dave Sunday beat Eugene DePasquale (a real putz) in an open contest. For Auditor General, Tim DeFoor beat Malcolm Kenyatta, keeping his seat. And for State Treasurer, Stacy Garrity bested Erin McClelland to keep her seat. Best of all, although it’s still too close to call, it appears (to us) that Dave McCormick will unseat Biden-voting, swamp-dwelling Bob Casey in the U.S. Senate. Hooray!
