Energy Transfer Faces Hearing for Supposed ME Pipe Crimes June 21

Last October Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who is now running for governor, indicted Energy Transfer with 48 enviro-crimes related to the building of the Mariner East pipeline project (see Corrupt PA AG Shapiro Charges Mariner East 2 Pipe with 48 Crimes). Shapiro has an ongoing, open attack against the Marcellus industry. He duped a grand jury into indicting Energy Transfer, convincing them accidents are now crimes. A preliminary hearing on those 48 sham charges will happen on June 21st. Here’s the latest update…

ET Signs 25-Year Deal with China Gas for Lake Charles, La. LNG

Energy Transfer (ET) has signed a fifth customer to accept shipments of LNG produced by ET’s yet-to-be-constructed LNG export facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana, located on the Calcasieu ship channel. Yesterday (yes, on a Sunday), ET issued a press release to announce a 25-year deal with China Gas to purchase 0.7 million tonnes (MT) of LNG per year on a free-on-board (FOB) basis. Added with the other deals, ET has now pre-sold 5.8 MT per year of the site’s planned capacity to produce 16.45 MT per year, meaning 35% of the capacity is now spoken for. More than a third of the way there!

Clean Air Council Claims Victory in Marcus Hook Air Permit Case

The radicals of the Clean Air Council (CAC) are claiming a (very small) victory in their campaign against processing NGLs at the Marcus Hook refinery located near Philadelphia. CAC is CACkling that they have forced Energy Transfer, builder of the mighty Mariner East (ME) pipeline system (a pipeline that CAC couldn’t stop), to back down on how permits are issued for the Marcus Hook facility–the place where NGLs from ME end up for processing and loading for export. The end result is…well…not much. Nothing will really change. The same volume of NGLs will still flow to Marcus Hook, and the same volume of NGLs will be loaded onto ships and exported to other countries. The only thing that changes is that ET spends more time and pays more money to obtain a single large permit instead of two separate, smaller permits. We’ll explain.

Mariner East Pipe Fulfills Promise as Southeast Pa. Economic Engine

As we told you last week, Energy Transfer, during its first quarter update, spoke about the now-completed Mariner East pipeline system that flows NGLs, including ethane, propane, and butane, from eastern Ohio and southwestern Pennsylvania all the way to southeastern PA and the Marcus Hook terminal (see Energy Transfer 1Q: ME Pipe Done; Possible Marcus Hook Expansion). Here’s two pieces of information we picked up in a new article in the Philly Inquirer: (1) The original ME1 Pipeline (an older pipeline repurposed to use for NGLs) is being converted back into flowing refined fuels from Midwestern refineries to the Philadelphia market, and (2) a temporary workaround pipeline in the Philly area used for ME was taken out of service back in February.

Energy Transfer 1Q: ME Pipe Done; Possible Marcus Hook Expansion

Energy Transfer, one of the biggest pipeline and midstream companies in the U.S., issued its quarterly update yesterday. Of particular interest to us was the honorable mention the Mariner Easter (ME) project received. Construction of the final phase of the Mariner East project was completed in 1Q22, bringing Energy Transfer’s total NGL capacity on the Mariner East pipeline system to more than 365,000 barrels per day, including ethane. NGLs, including those flowing through the ME system, along with LNG, were the two dominant themes running through yesterday’s update.

ET Signs Deal with S Korea’s SK Gas for Lake Charles, La. LNG

Another day, another deal from Energy Transfer (ET) in signing up customers to accept shipments of LNG produced by ET’s yet-to-be-constructed LNG export facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana located on the Calcasieu ship channel. Yesterday we told you ET had signed up Singapore’s Gunvor to accept 2.0 million tonnes (MT) per year (see ET Signs Deal with Singapore’s Gunvor for Lake Charles, La. LNG). Today we bring you news of ET signing another customer, South Korea’s SK Gas Trading, to accept 0.4 MT per year.

ET Signs Deal with Singapore’s Gunvor for Lake Charles, La. LNG

Pipeline giant Energy Transfer (builder of the Rover and Mariner East pipelines here in the M-U) is planning a large-scale LNG export facility in Lake Charles, Louisiana located on the Calcasieu ship channel. The project will convert Energy Transfer’s existing Lake Charles LNG import and regasification terminal to become an LNG export facility. In March, ET announced it had signed a pair of 20-year deals with ENN, a Chinese company, to deliver a total of 2.7 million tonnes (MT) per year to the Chinese Communists (see Energy Transfer Signs 20-Yr LNG Export Deal with ChiComms). Yesterday ET announced it has signed up another big customer–one of the world’s biggest LNG traders, Gunvor, headquartered in Singapore.

PA DEP Approves Restoration of ME2 Pipe Spill @ Marsh Creek Lake

Northern Red Belly Cooter

If you lurk around the shoreline of Ranger Cove at Marsh Creek Lake (Chester County, PA) this week or next, you may spot people setting traps for Northern Red Belly Cooters. What’s a Northern Red Belly Cooter? It’s a turtle. The people setting the traps are working for pipeline giant Energy Transfer (ET). The traps are part of a plan to relocate the turtles while work is done to remediate a spill of nontoxic drilling mud that ended up in the lake back in the summer of 2020. Moving turtles is part of a plan approved by the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) to clean up the spilled drilling mud and restore Marsh Creek Lake to its “pristine” (man-made) condition.

Rover Pipeline $40M FERC Fine Could be an Episode of “Dallas”

The ongoing tiff between the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Energy Transfer (ET) over a drilling mud spill in Ohio back in 2017 (five years ago!) has become a steamy, cheesy plotline for an episode of the TV series Dallas. We’re talking about the original Dallas series from the 1980s with Larry Hagman and storylines of “who’s jumping into bed with whom.” FERC is faulting ET for creating a company culture of drill and build fast that led to a contract worker adding diesel fuel to a stuck drill bit in an effort to work it free, fining the company a staggering $40 million for the presence of diesel in a drilling mud spill. ET says the diesel situation was the result of a rogue contract worker (a foreman) under pressure and distracted by rumors of another foreman sleeping with the wife of one of his workers. No, we’re not kidding. You can’t make this stuff up.

PA PUC Judge Fines Mariner East Pipe $51K for Work Near Apt Bldg

Earlier this week the Deputy Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) issued a ruling against the now completed Mariner East 2 pipeline project, assessing a $51,000 fine on the project. Which is relatively minor considering the project has already been fined by the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) more than $20 million. This latest parting shot at the now-done NGL pipeline project levied for being too loud and not doing enough to communicate with residents in an apartment complex near where the pipeline was doing construction work in Delaware County.

Antis Lie About Work to Commission & Restore Mariner East Pipe

Even though construction is completed for the Mariner East pipeline system, anti-fossil fuelers are still lying about the project and its status. Energy Transfer said during its recent quarterly update that Mariner East is in the process of being commissioned, i.e. tested (see All Construction for Mariner East 2 Pipeline Now Done, Online 1Q). As testing takes place, sometimes ET needs to replace a small section of pipe *already in the ground* to ensure the pipeline is 100% safe when it goes into full operation. Antis point to pipe replacement as evidence the project is still “under construction.” That is false. Construction of the project is done.

All Construction for Mariner East 2 Pipeline Now Done, Online 1Q

Frankly, we sometimes wondered if we would ever see this day! Fantastic news: The Mariner East Pipeline system, including Mariner East 1 (ME1), Mariner East 2 (ME2), and Mariner East 2X (ME2X), is now completely built and in the ground. According to an update by builder and owner Energy Transfer issued yesterday, the company is in the process of commissioning and bringing the remaining bits online. The entire system will be online during the first quarter of this year–no later than March 30th. Hallelujah!

Mariner East Pipeline Protesters “Put First Responders at Risk”

Mariner East 2 Pipeline protesters illegally block work

In a new column on the City & State – Pennsylvania magazine website, Bruce Castor unloads on “unruly protesters” who, by their actions, endanger the lives of first responders called out to rescue them when they go too far in attempting to block the Mariner East pipeline project. Castor calls on these dunderheads to “fully educate themselves on pipeline safety” and reconsider engaging in illegal protests against ME2. Who is Castor? Bruce L. Castor Jr. was appointed as the first solicitor general of Pennsylvania in 2016 and served as acting attorney general later that year. He has also served as district attorney and county commissioner in Montgomery County, PA. He is a heavyweight in the PA legal community.

Mariner East 2 Pipeline Replaces Small Section, Antis Have a Cow

smart pig

As part of the process of installing and commissioning a new pipeline, like the Mariner East 2 pipeline, the builder (Energy Transfer in this case) runs a “smart pig” (a pipeline inspection gauge) through the pipeline to ensure there are no defects or issues. ET’s smart pig detected a potential problem in a newly installed (not yet operational) segment in East Goshen Township in Chester County, PA. So ET alerted the local One-Call and then dug up the spot, replaced the pipe, and covered it up again, which only took a few days. Meanwhile, anti-fossil fuel fanatics went into hysteria mode when they learned of the fix.

PA AG Attacks Marcellus Industry Again, Indicts ET w/9 Enviro Crimes

Once again Pennsylvania’s Attorney General, Josh Shapiro, is turning accidents, including an accident that caused an explosion of the newly completed Revolution Pipeline in 2018, into crimes. Shapiro has an ongoing, open attack against the Marcellus industry. Yesterday his office announced Shapiro had hoodwinking a grand jury into indicting Energy Transfer, builder of Revolution Pipeline, with nine counts of “environmental crimes” based on the 2018 accident. Can you imagine what Shapiro would do to the Marcellus as governor? God forbid.
