Corrupt NY Gov. Cuomo Pushes Fields of Ugly Solar Panels in Upstate

New York’s Governor, Andrew Cuomo, is as corrupt a politician as they come. He single handedly stopped the safest, cleanest form of energy from taking root in upstate New York–shale gas extraction. In shale gas extraction, once the drilling is done and pipelines are installed–you don’t notice anything. There is no lasting effect. The grass and trees grow back. The “wound” in the ground is healed. There’s a small wellhead that sticks a up a few feet from the ground that can’t be seen from 200 feet away and that’s about it. Instead of allowing minimally invasive shale drilling, Cuomo is now pushing upstate farmers to agree to installing 30+ acre fields with solar panels that blemish the landscape for 30 years or more and kills birds stupid enough to fly directly over it. Cuomo pretends so-called “renewable” energy–like solar–has no side affects. FALSE. Solar has its negatives, just like every form of energy. One of solar’s negatives is that it destroys the landscape on which it sits–making it unusable for anything else and an eyesore that can be seen for miles. Solar is the opposite of shale energy, which allows farmers to plant fields and use their land–even over top of buried pipelines. Farmers can’t use their fields with solar panels sitting on them. FERC Denies NY Request to Stop Work on Pipeline Near Nuke Plant

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has just delivered a blistering slap across the face of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. You may recall in early March Cuomo asked FERC to stop Spectra Energy’s work on their Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline project, an $876 million expansion of the existing Algonquin pipeline system that will carry 342 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to New England states that badly need the gas. Millennium Pipeline Files with FERC to Upgrade Eastern Region

The Millennium Pipeline stretches ~244 miles from Independence in Steuben County, NY to Buena Vista in Rockland County, NY. The Millennium, which is supplied by local production and storage fields and interconnecting upstream pipelines, serves customers along its route in New York’s Southern Tier region and helps meet the energy needs of northeast markets. MDN is written about 3 miles away from the path of the Millennium in Broome County, NY. In February the Millennium pre-filed an application for what it calls its Eastern System Upgrade (ESU). The ESU would add 7.8 miles of extra looped pipeline in Orange County, upgrade a compressor station in Delaware County, build a new compressor in Sullivan County and make some minor tweaks to metering stations in Rockland County. The project will pump another $275 million into the New York economy with the end result of increasing the flow of natural gas for New York and beyond by fall 2018. Cabot Says Constitution Pipeline Delayed Yet Another Year – Thx NY

In what appears to us to be a “might as well get all of the bad news out in one day” strategy, Cabot Oil & Gas announced yesterday (after losing a case related to water contamination in Dimock, PA) what everyone already knows: The Constitution Pipeline is delayed for yet another year. The Constitution is illegally being held up by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The pipeline, approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in 2014, will run from Susquehanna County, PA to Schoharie County, NY where it will connect with two interstate gas pipelines. You can only clear trees until the end of March because threatened and endangered bats (don’t ask). New York has managed to delay the pipeline for another entire season. Instead of being ready later this year, the pipeline is now delayed until the second half of next year. Here’s what we want to know: When will Williams (building the pipeline) and Cabot, the major backer and beneficiary of the pipeline, sue New York in federal court to force the issue? Gov. Cuomo Asks FERC to Halt Algonquin Pipeline Near Nuke Plant

Spectra Energy’s Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline project is an $876 million expansion of the existing Algonquin pipeline system that will carry 342 million cubic feet of natural gas per day to New England states that badly need the gas. On March 3, 2015 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued their final approval for the project, allowing it to go forward. Construction began last year and continues now, with a target in-service date later this year. That is, until New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo stepped in. Cuomo sent a letter on Monday to FERC (copy below) asking FERC to stop construction of AIM because the proposed pipeline path takes it right next to a “troubled” nuclear power plant along the shoreline of the Hudson River. Cuomo says he’s concerned about the drilling that will take place, being so close to a plant that has ongoing issues. Will Cuomo once again stop a natural gas pipeline from being built? NY Lawmakers Want State Pension Fund to Divest from Fossil Fuels

It looks like students at the University of Pittsburgh aren’t the only the only ones who are devoid of intelligence (see Pitt Brats “Demand” Endowment Divest from < 1% Fossil Investments). You can now add a group of Democrat lawmakers in New York State’s Senate and Assembly to the list of fools. Some two dozen Democrat lawmakers want State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli (radical Democrat), the sole trustee in charge of investing the state’s public workers pension fund (worth $178.3 billion), to sell any investments the fund has in companies that engage in extracting fossil fuels. Why? Because they believe in the fairy tale that burning fossil fuels causes Mother Earth, whom they worship, to heat up. Sad Anniversary – New York State Fracking Moratorium

Cornell University Rejects Fossil Fuel Divestment Scam

Cornell University is home to some real loons–like Tony Ingraffea and Robert Howarth, who try to claim using natural gas is worse for the environment than burning coal (see New Cornell University Study Says Shale Gas Extraction Worse for Global Warming Than Coal). Their research has been debunked numerous times (see Howarth, Ingraffea Shale Gas Study on Global Warming Discredited by U.S. Department of Energy). But then there are some real scientists and professors at Cornell, like Lawrence M. Cathles, Larry Brown, and Andrew Hunter (see New Cornell Study Says Coal is Not Cleaner than Natural Gas). Over the years we’ve despaired that Cornell would ever pull its collective head out of its…asphalt. But then none other than the Cornell Board of Trustees does us proud. There has been a great deal of pressure from spoiled, rich, white kids to force the universities they attend to divest from fossil fuels. This is true for Cornell as well. The Cornell Board of Trustees has just voted NOT to divest their considerable endowment funds from companies that produce fossil fuels. Kudos to Cornell!…

FERC OKs Tree-Cutting for Constitution Pipeline – in PA

In a crushing blow to anti-drilling radicals who have tried their best to stop the Constitution Pipeline, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has granted Williams, builder of the Constitution, permission to begin cutting down trees along the pipeline’s path in Pennsylvania. Williams still cannot fell trees in New York State, where the bulk of the pipeline will be built. However, FERC would not grant permission for PA unless they intend to grant permission on the other side of the border too–and everyone knows it. Currently New York’s anti-drilling governor, Andrew Cuomo, is holding up the 125-mile project that will deliver natural gas from Susquehanna County, PA to Schoharie County, NY by connecting with two interstate pipelines. Cuomo is about to create a constitution crisis in which the federal government will be forced to overrule the state and allow the pipeline to be built. Cuomo is withholding stream crossing permits–the only thing left before bulldozers begin to clear a path. Cuomo is once again caving to pressure from his lunatic left base of supporters. When someone organizes and repeatedly shuts down a legal, functioning business with so-called “civil disobedience,” it’s not civil and it’s not an act of disobedience–it’s a crime. If you show up with a bunch of nutters to block the entrance to a facility once and the cameras are there to record it–you’ve made your point. Anti fossil-fuel radicals opposed to creating an underground propane storage facility in a depleted salt mine along the shore of Seneca Lake (in upstate New York) have recently stepped up their so-called civil disobedience at the facility–staging weekly blockades at the site three weeks in a row. Cuomo Needs to “Snap on a Pair” and Approve the Constitution Pipe

“What do we want? Pipeline! When do we want it? Now!” It was a raucous crowd who gathered last Saturday in the tiny village of Afton, New York to show support for the Williams Constitution Pipeline project. The River Club in Afton was jammed with people–by our estimation some 250-300 people. The meeting was organized and hosted by the Joint Landowners Coalition of New York (JLCNY). The JLCNY’s attorney, Scott Kurkoski (from Levene Gouldin & Thompson LLP) began the meeting with a full-throated yell: “New York Can’t Wait!” That simple sentence summed up the focus of the rally. The Constitution Pipeline is fully permitted by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The only thing holding up construction of the pipeline is a stream-crossing permit from New York State. The tail is wagging the dog. Speaker after speaker (politicians, business people, labor reps) outlined the reasons why New York State can no longer wait for Gov. Cuomo to continue his waffling on this project. The frustration with Cuomo and the DEC was palpable in the audience. Whenever Cuomo’s name was mentioned there were cat calls and boos. Perhaps the best line of the day, from all of the speeches, was uttered by Assemblyman Clifford Crouch. Cliff mentioned he had called the Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) just a few days prior to ask about the status of the permits. Without saying so, the DEC rep indicated the delay is not due to the agency itself. The implication was clear: Cuomo is holding it up. Crouch then said this: “We need to contact Snap-on Tools and get the governor a pair to snap on!” The crowd roared. They loved it!…

Blat Session to Oppose Upstate NY NatGas-Fired Electric Plant

Last September Hollywood actor James Cromwell, who lives in Manhattan and keeps a summer home in upstate–Orange County, NY–banded with some of his anti-fossil fuel neighbors and sued to stop the Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) $900 million natural gas-fired electric generating plant planned to be built near his home. The frivolous lawsuit was tossed out (see Orange County, NY Marcellus-Fired Electric Plant OK’d by Judge). What’s a spoiled rich kid from Manhattan who wants to keep upstate pristine as his own private playground going to do? Get a bunch of easily-impressed neighbors to stage a sit-in and illegally block construction at the site. NY AG Objects to Williams Tree Clearing for Constitution Pipeline

This one was easy to predict. Last week we told you that Williams had asked, and received permission from the New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC), to begin clearing trees along the path of the Constitution Pipeline in upstate New York (see Williams Plans to Start Clearing Trees for Constitution Next Week). Anti-fossil fuelers went squealing like petulant three year-olds to their favorite “parent,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, asking daddy to stop Williams from killing trees. And so last Thursday Schneiderman filed an objection to the tree-clearing plan with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), to placate the petulant three year-olds that are his favorite constituents. The question now is, will FERC put a halt to the tree clearing, which must happen before April 1st when it becomes bat season and companies can no longer clear trees for fear of roosting Northern long-eared bats…

Williams Plans to Start Clearing Trees for Constitution Next Week

Since last October MDN has been calling on Williams, the company planning to build the 124-mile Constitution Pipeline from Susquehanna County, PA to Schoharie County, NY, to take the gloves off and go after New York State, aggressively (see Time to Force NY DEC to Issue Permit for Constitution Pipeline). Earlier this month we re-posted an article from MDN friend Tom Shepstone and his Natural Gas Now website (always excellent, must read) that chronicles where we are at and how we got here with ongoing delays of the Constitution from the NY Dept. of Environmental Conservation (see Time for Williams/FERC to Sue NY & End Constitution Pipe Delays). In short, the DEC is now arbitrarily (for political reasons) intentionally withholding stream crossing permits that are delaying construction of the Constitution. The state is in danger of being sued by, and their authority to grant those permits taken over by, the federal government if they don’t issue those permits forthwith. Williams is attempting to advance the ball, still playing nicey nice, hoping to coax the DEC into issuing the permits. Williams has asked for and received permission (from the DEC) to begin clearing trees along the pipeline’s path, a process that will begin next week. However, rabid anti-drillers have asked NY’s out-of-control Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, to step in and stop the tree clearing. If Williams doesn’t start the tree clearing now, they risk losing another entire construction season. There is a finite window each year you can clear trees because of nesting Northern long-eared bats, an endangered species…
