2 Frack Equipment Manufacturers Face Lawsuit re WV Pad Explosion
On July 7, 2018, Jeffrey Blaniar was working as a blending operating for Southwestern Energy at a well pad in New Martinsville, WV (in Wetzel County). When Blaniar approached a pump to turn it off, it exploded, causing second-degree burns and breaking several bones. Blaniar’s left foot and lower leg eventually had to be amputated. It was a tragic accident to be sure. Blaniar sued Southwestern for negligence as well as the pump manufacturer and hose fitting manufacturer. Last Friday a federal judge ruled the two manufacturers, which had petitioned to have the case against them dropped, must face a potential jury trial to prove their products did not contribute to the accident.

This edition of the Marcellus/Utica permits report covers the past two weeks as MDN was taking a break during the last week of 2021. For the period of December 20 through January 2, there were 29 permits issued to drill new shale wells in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. PA had 16 new permits (most of them located on two well pads), OH had 12 new permits (spread across five well pads), and WV had just one new permit. Must be WV DEP took the last two weeks of the year off.

It was a pretty paltry week for new shale drilling permits in the Marcellus/Utica. Two weeks ago Pennsylvania issued 21 permits to drill new shale wells. They must have shot their wad because last week PA issued just two new permits–the lowest number in PA we’ve seen in…we can’t remember how long. Ohio issued no new permits for Utica drilling last week…zero…goose egg. Only West Virginia held out some promise, issuing seven new permits for shale drilling last week.
