Amazon Files Plans for 36 Data Centers at Homer City Gas Plant

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Back in August, we told you Amazon Web Services (AWS) was “in discussions” to land data centers at the massive Homer City Energy Campus in Indiana County, PA (see Amazon in Talks to Land Data Centers at Homer City Gas Plant). We said we’d keep watching for the permit filings that would turn “talks” into “reality.” Well, here they are. Amazon’s data center arm, Amazon Data Services, Inc., has filed a preliminary master land development plan with Indiana County to build 36 data centers on roughly 1,100 acres of the campus, powered by the 4.4–4.5 gigawatt (GW) natural gas-fired plant now under construction there. Domino #1 Falls: NFG Closes Ohio Buy; Seneca Split Up Next?

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

The first domino has fallen. Last Thursday, National Fuel Gas Company (NFG) closed its purchase of CenterPoint Energy’s Ohio natural gas utility, the Dayton-area company formerly known as Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio. Why should Marcellus/Utica folks care about a utility deal in the Miami Valley? Because NFG’s CEO told us several weeks ago that this closing clears the way to split off Seneca Resources, NFG’s drilling arm, into its own separate company (see Seneca Resources Going Solo? NFG Board to Decide Spinoff by Oct 15). NFG’s board says it will make the call by October 15, which is just 10 days from now. Read More “Domino #1 Falls: NFG Closes Ohio Buy; Seneca Split Up Next?”

Bipartisan Permitting Bill Takes Aim at NY’s Pipeline Veto Power

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Four U.S. senators—two Republicans, two Democrats—released the final text last Wednesday of a major bipartisan permitting reform bill called the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026. It’s 417 pages long, and buried in it are some of the most pipeline-friendly provisions we’ve seen come out of Congress in years: a 150-day deadline to file lawsuits, a nine-month cap on state water permit reviews for interstate gas pipelines, and a free pass from NEPA review for compressor stations and looping built inside existing pipeline rights-of-way. The catch? It has to clear the Senate (60 votes) AND the House during the lame-duck session after the Nov. 3 elections. The clock is ticking. Royalty Conspiracy Theory Now 0-for-3 in Williamsport Federal Court

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

A federal judge in Williamsport has thrown out two 10-year-old lawsuits filed by northeastern Pennsylvania landowners who claimed Anadarko, Mitsui, and Williams (the old Access Midstream) were running a mob-style racket to shrink royalty checks. If that sounds familiar, it should. The same lawyers made the same argument in a sister case we first told you about in 2015, and the same judge tossed that one too. The landowners’ “Chesapeake/Access conspiracy” theory is now zero for three. Read More “Royalty Conspiracy Theory Now 0-for-3 in Williamsport Federal Court”

Kinder Says TGP 219 South Pipeline Could Be Multiple Times Bigger

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Back in July, we told you Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP), a Kinder Morgan subsidiary, had launched a non-binding open season for its 219 South Project (see TGP Launches Open Season to Flow More M-U Molecules South). The project would move up to 530,000 dekatherms per day (Dth/d) of Marcellus/Utica gas south from TGP’s Station 219 in Pennsylvania through Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. A dekatherm is a measure of heat content, and 530,000 Dth/d works out to roughly 510 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d). We predicted Kinder would get “plenty of bites.” Did they ever! Kinder CFO David Michels said in a recent fireside chat that the response was “very strong and positive.” And here’s the kicker: he said the final project could be multiple times bigger than originally announced. Mass. Gov. Who Bragged About Killing Pipelines Now Wants One, Fast

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Back in 2022, then-Massachusetts Attorney General (now Governor) Maura Healey hit the campaign trail and bragged, “I stopped two gas pipelines from coming into this state” (see Mass. Gov. Again Changes Story re Blocking Two NatGas Pipelines). Fast forward four and a half years. Healey is running for reelection in a race where the No. 1 issue is sky-high energy bills. So what does she do? She writes a letter to President Trump’s Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, asking the feds to hurry up and approve a natural gas pipeline expansion into Massachusetts. You can’t make this stuff up. Read More “Mass. Gov. Who Bragged About Killing Pipelines Now Wants One, Fast”

Called It: Big Green Takes Kinder’s MSX & SSE4 Pipelines to Court

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Back in August, we told you FERC had approved Kinder Morgan’s $5.2 billion pair of Southeast pipeline projects, and we told you to expect Big Green to come after it (see FERC Green-Lights $5.2B Kinder Morgan Southeast Gas Push). Here we are. On Oct. 1, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), along with the Sierra Club’s own lawyer, asked the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., to “review and set aside” FERC’s approval of the Mississippi Crossing (MSX) and South System Expansion 4 (SSE4) projects. Ten environmental and community groups and two landowners signed on. Read More “Called It: Big Green Takes Kinder’s MSX & SSE4 Pipelines to Court”

    M-U Rigs Flat at 33 for 5th Week; Nat’l Slips by 1 to 598

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Five weeks. Same number. The Marcellus/Utica held at 33 rigs again for the week ended October 2, while the national count finally blinked, slipping by one to 598 after three straight weekly gains. Oil rigs up one. Gas rigs down two. Frac spreads inched up again. And the bad news on the price board: natural gas futures gave back last week’s gains, sliding back under $3 to around $2.92 per MMBtu. But the Enverus permit list had a surprise for us, and it’s a good one. Read More “M-U Rigs Flat at 33 for 5th Week; Nat’l Slips by 1 to 598”

Jim on the Mend: A Quick Post-Surgery Update

    October 5, 2026October 5, 2026

Thank you for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers last week. My spine surgery last Tuesday went well. The sciatica pain that sent me to the operating table is largely gone. It still lingers a little, but it’s greatly diminished. The pain from the incision, however, was severe at first. It has gotten a little better each day as the swelling goes down and my body heals. I still have miles to go, but at least I’m on the right road. Read More “Jim on the Mend: A Quick Post-Surgery Update”
