NY Idiots Demand Cuomo Stop Burning All Fossil Fuels by 2030

A small group of people whose bubble isn’t in the center of the level staged a “protest” on Saturday in Long Beach, NY (Nassau County), nominally against the Williams Rockaway Delivery Lateral pipeline project. The Rockaway project adds 3.2 miles of new Transco pipeline and related facilities in New York, from the Marine Parkway Bridge in Far Rockaway to offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. The protesters’ stated reason for opposing the project? Not because it may disturb underwater ecosystems. Not because it would temporarily disrupt the lives of those living nearby during construction. Not because of fears over water contamination. No. The stated reason is, “for the end to burning fossil fuels” and because they want NY state “to convert to renewable energy by 2030.” It is, literally, an impossibility to end the use of fossil fuels within the next 100 years. But these idiots refuse to use logic and reason. So now they’re targeting a minuscule 3 mile pipeline in an effort to vent their irrational rage. Meanwhile, up the Hudson in Westchester County, a different small group of nutters also gathered on Saturday to vent their rage for the same reason (anti-fossil fuel extremism), except the focus of their rage is Spectra Energy’s Atlantic Bridge Pipeline project…

Massive Electricity Shortage Coming in New York City, Long Island

We spotted a rather long and (to us) convoluted article about an experiment a New York City-area utility is conducting. National Grid (electric and gas utility) and their software partner AutoGrid are going to “use the latest demand response technology from the electricity world for natural gas.” That is, they are going to use software hooked to hardware to control how much natural gas is used by (so far) 16 customers signed up for the service. Supposedly it will work out bottlenecks in delivering natgas to customers–somehow reducing the amount of gas used overall. And that’s where our understanding falls down. How can you use software to use less gas–unless you are forcing someone’s thermostat to be turned down? We don’t get it. But supposedly this is the latest and greatest in technology. What did catch our attention in the article was a short passage about the coming electricity shortage NY faces because we lack natural gas pipeline infrastructure to fire gas generating plants. Specifically, New York and Long Island will soon face massive electricity shortages–unless utilities figure out how to force customers to lower their thermostats so they can use the gas to generate electricity…

FERC Denies NY DEC Request for Pipeline Rehearing, Heads to Court

It’s “game on” between the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The DEC had arbitrarily, after more than one year of review, ruled against issuing a federal water crossing permit for a tiny 7.8 mile pipeline Millennium needs to build from its main pipeline to an electric generating plant under construction in Orange County. The power plant is due to be completed in early 2018, and needs a fuel supply. In a historic decision, FERC overruled NY DEC in September (see History Made! FERC Overrules NY DEC on Millennium Pipe Permit). The DEC, in a snit fit, demanded FERC not OK the beginning of construction until an army of DEC lawyers figures out a way to appeal, delay, obstruct and otherwise stop the project anyway (see NY DEC Appeals FERC Override of Millennium Pipe Decision). On Oct. 20th, Millennium asked FERC for permission to begin building the pipeline and NOT wait while the DEC tries to obstruct the project. A week later, FERC said “yes” to Millennium (see FERC Humiliates NY DEC, Millennium Can Begin Construction on Pipe). Here’s the new news: On Wednesday, FERC issued an order denying the DEC’s request for a stay and rehearing on the beginning of construction. But that’s not the end of it. Earlier this month NY’s egomaniac (and corrupt) Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, filed an emergency request with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (in NY) to block construction. The court granted his request and construction can’t begin. On Wednesday Millennium filed its own emergency request to dissolve the block in place from Schneiderman’s request, because Millennium has an immovable deadline. Grab the popcorn–this one is getting good…

FERC Commissioner Powelson Uncensored: New England Trouble Ahead

We love Rob Powelson, newly-minted Federal Energy Regulatory Commission member appointed by President Trump. Before joining FERC, Powelson was a member of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. We love him because he speaks his mind. Although he’s circumspect about what he says, Powelson still finds a way to get in those zingers. You never have to wonder what he thinks. For example, in March of this year (before joining FERC), Powelson said this: “The jihad has begun…At the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission groups actually show up at commissioners’ homes to make sure we don’t get this gas to market. How irresponsible is that?” (see Potential FERC Com. Powleson Calls Anti-Fossil Fuelers “Jihadists”). Yes! He called eco-jihadists, “jihadists,” which of course sent the left into a tailspin. He later had to walk back that comment (see Powelson Under Fire for Calling Enviro Jihadists, “Jihadists”). At a conference last week, Powelson was at it again. We call it being uncensored–and that’s a good thing. Powelson said that Cove Point LNG is now up and running, as of Nov. 1st. He also had some choice comments about New England’s abysmal electric situation and New York’s obtuse opposition to shale gas…

NFG 3Q17: Delayed Northern Access Pipe No Closer to Resolution

Last week National Fuel Gas Company, headquartered in Western New York State with drilling subsidiary Seneca Resources and pipeline subsidiary Empire Pipeline, issued its fourth quarter (everyone else’s third quarter) 2017 update. In the accompanying analyst phone call, CEO Ronald Tanski blamed the delay of the Northern Access Pipeline project (delayed by the NY Dept. of Environmental Conservation) for lower earnings than the company would have otherwise realized. Thanks, business UNfriendly NY! You may recall in July NFG filed a lawsuit against the DEC for arbitrarily rejecting the project (see Northern Access Pipeline Court Case Further Threatens NY DEC). On the analyst call, Tanski said the case, filed in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals (in NY), will hold oral arguments on Nov. 16th. Tanski also said it’s “anyone’s guess” when NFG will get an answer about the project–either from the lawsuit or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). On the drilling front, Seneca Resources produced 40.4 billion cubic feet equivalent (Bcfe) last quarter, up a tiny 1% from the same quarter a year ago. After hedging, Seneca got $2.91 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) for their gas–not too shabby. Below is the full update for NFG for last quarter (remember they also have a huge utility business, in addition to drilling and pipelines), along with excerpts from the analyst call and the latest slide deck…

Crestwood Sells Salt Operation in Watkins Glen, Keeps LPG Storage

Our heart stopped when we saw news from Crestwood Equity (used to be called Crestwood Midstream) yesterday that the company has sold its US Salt business on the shore of Seneca Lake near Watkins Glen to Kissner Group for $225 million. We thought, “Oh no! Crestwood has finally thrown in the towel on their Seneca Lake Propane Storage project!” But alas, our fears were unfounded. Background: In 2009 Inergy filed a request to convert a depleted salt cavern along the shore of Seneca Lake (in Schuyler County, NY, near Watkins Glen) into a propane/natural gas storage facility. Inergy was later bought by and merged into Crestwood Midstream, and Crestwood Midstream later renamed itself Crestwood Equity Partners. The New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has been sitting on its hands from the beginning, refusing to grant the necessary permits to allow the facility to open. Sound familiar? Same old delay and later deny strategy from our corrupt governor, Andrew Cuomo. As recently as May of this year, Crestwood remained committed to building the storage facility in depleted salt caverns originally drilled by US Salt, which is owned by Crestwood (see Crestwood Drops Seneca Lake Natgas Storage Plan, Keeps LPG Plan). Crestwood scaled back the plan, excluding storage of natural gas and instead sticking with storing just propane (or LPG, liquefied petroleum gas). So when we read the news in Crestwood’s third quarter update yesterday that the company has sold off US Salt–we thought that was the end of the LPG storage project. Apparently antis in the Finger Lakes region thought the same thing. A local news outlet published an incorrect story stating the LPG storage project is dead. But then Crestwood issued a follow-up statement to say no, the LPG project is still alive and kicking–they kept that part of the US Salt real estate and still intend to build the storage facility, when/if the corrupt Cuomo DEC issues the necessary permits…

FERC Humiliates NY DEC, Millennium Can Begin Construction on Pipe

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has just escalated a much-needed war with the CORRUPT, Andrew Cuomo-directed Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in New York. We won’t recount the entire history, but the DEC had arbitrarily, after more than one year of review, ruled against issuing a federal water crossing permit for a tiny 7.8 mile pipeline Millennium needs to build from its main pipeline to an electric generating plant under construction in Orange County. The power plant is due to be completed in early 2018–and needs a fuel supply. In a monumental decision, FERC overruled NY DEC in September (see History Made! On Oct. 20th, Millennium asked FERC for permission to begin building the pipeline and NOT wait while the DEC tries to obstruct the project (see Millennium Raises Stakes Against NY, Asks FERC to Begin Pipe Work). Last Friday FERC said yes to Millennium, granting them permission to begin construction. Finally! Someone with enough guts to stand up to the corrupt Cuomo machine! But don’t count the DEC out just yet. Yesterday the DEC filed a lawsuit in the liberal 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan, hoping they can get a lib Dem judge (someone in Cuomo’s pocket) to sign an order stopping construction…

Natural Gas Power to Replace Nuclear Plant in New York

On Monday, experts said that closing the Indian Point nuclear plant on the Hudson River in New York will cause a loss of power to the local electric grid feeding New York City. However, they also said natural gas electric generation will fill the void left by the old and uneconomic nuke plant. That is, Marcellus Shale gas will save the day–yaaah! Entergy, the plant owner, is not all that thrilled that natural gas has won this round. An Entergy spokesman at the event could barely conceal his venom, warning gas is an “intermittent facility” with “consequences.” Oooooo. We’re scared. Of course it was nothing more than sour grapes that nukes can’t compete without massive increases for ratepayers to pay the owners of the nuke plants. We live in the U.S., not the U.S.S.R. We have free enterprise, capitalism, freedom and liberty–not a command-and-control economy. Entergy wasn’t the only one spouting nightmare scenarios when (not if) natural gas takes over. Antis don’t want low carbon, low cost natural gas either–because it’s an evil fossil fuel. Antis are looking for a solution, any solution, other than gas-fired power generation, to fill the void that will be left by Indian Point when it closes. Antis have even gotten behind a plan to dig up 333 miles of precious Mom Earth to lay a power cable from Canada through NY. To which we ask: What’s the difference in digging up the ground to lay a power cable or digging up the ground to lay a gas pipeline? Answer: None. Which points out antis’ rank hypocrisy on the issue of pipelines…

Former NY AG Accuses Current AG of Corruption re Exxon Witch Hunt

It seems like forever we’ve been telling MDN readers that the Attorney General in the State of New York, Eric Schneiderman, is corrupt. We’ve written dozens of stories about Schneiderman (see them here). Schneiderman has targeted shale companies, pipeline companies, and his biggest gambit to date: ExxonMobil. Schniederman, in collusion with Big Green groups and several other far-left Democrat AGs, launched an investigation into Exxon last year, claiming Exxon “knew” that mythical man-made global warming is real and that their products (oil and gas) contribute to said global warming and that they (Exxon) have hidden their “research” from investors for years. Schneiderman has changed his story several times about why he launched the investigation–and what he’s looking for. He has demanded all sorts of internal documents from Exxon. In return, Exxon has demanded emails and documents from Schneiderman–to expose his collusion with Big Green. Schneiderman has refused such court orders. The man is an out-of-control menace. But it’s one thing for MDN to say it. “There goes Jim again, harping on an issue like Schneiderman, you know how Jim tends to exaggerate.” So if you don’t believe us when we say Schneiderman is corrupt, perhaps you’ll believe a former Attorney General of New York, Dennis Vacco, when he says Schneiderman is corrupt…

Antis Push Back on Albany, NY Tiny NatGas-Fired Electric Plant

It’s not supposed to work this way. Wednesday evening a “public meeting” was held in Albany, NY to share details about construction of a “state-of-the-art, locally-sourced mini-power grid” that will connect to the statewide electric grid but will also be able to operate independently, to power the Empire State Plaza in Albany–a complex of buildings in downtown Albany housing much of New York State government (see NY Gov Cuomo Building New Fracked Gas Elec Plant to Power Albany!). The energy-efficient microgrid, powered by fracked Pennsylvania Marcellus natural gas, will supply 90% of the power for the 98-acre downtown Albany complex, and is expected to save the Plaza more than $2.7 million in annual energy costs. Using the new micogrid to generate electricity in downtown Albany will remove more than 25,600 tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere each year–the equivalent of taking more than 4,900 cars off the road. What’s not to love, for an environmentalist? As it turns out, plenty. Some of the more rabid among Andrew Cuomo’s left-leaning base turned out to object to the project on Wednesday. Apparently they didn’t get the memo. Here in NY the corrupt Cuomo rules with an iron fist. This “public meeting” was not about the public objecting to His Lordship’s superior plans, it was about the public shutting up and listening to what’s coming. Don’t worry, Cuomo will make sure they don’t miss the second memo…

NGSA, API Take Aim at New York’s Plan to Favor Nukes over NatGas

It seems like since Donald Trump was elected, the far-left loons of the Democrat Party have become unhinged. Nowhere is that more apparent than New York State, with it’s corrupt governor, Andrew Cuomo. When it comes to oversight of the nation’s electric grid, and interstate pipeline infrastructure, the law is clear: The federal government, specifically the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is numero uno. Individual states cannot just willy-nilly decide they will horn in on how energy companies are incentivized–and they cannot use regulations to change the nature of power generation within their borders, because of the interconnected nature of electric power. Yet that is precisely what the lawless Cuomo is attempting to do in the Empire State. Via the NY Public Service Commission, Cuomo has set up a program called the Zero Emissions Credits (ZEC) program to subsidize nuclear power at the expense of fossil fuels, like natural gas. He’s trying to make it uncompetitive and expensive for natural gas to generate electricity in the state. An industry group sued to overturn ZEC, but a liberal judge for the US District Court for southern New York stuck up for Cuomo’s cockamamie plan (no surprise there). The case has been appealed and the Natural Gas Supply Association and American Petroleum Institute filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting the appeal against ZEC. It’s a loooong brief–40 pages. We have it below…

Millennium Raises Stakes Against NY, Asks FERC to Begin Pipe Work

On Aug. 30, the New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued a letter to FERC and Millennium Pipeline denying Millennium’s request for a water permit to build a 7.8 mile pipeline spur from the main Millennium Pipeline to a natural gas power plant under construction in Orange County (see Corrupt NY DEC Denies Water Permit for 7.8 Mile Power Plant Pipeline). In their rejection, the DEC claimed that FERC’s review of the power plant project (that the pipeline will feed) is deficient based on a recently-decided court case about a pipeline project in Florida. Since the project the pipeline would feed is deficient (in DEC’s view), so too is the pipeline that feeds it. A few weeks later, in September, FERC fired back by overruling NY DEC and granting the project permission to proceed without NY approval (see History Made! FERC Overrules NY DEC on Millennium Pipe Permit). On Friday (Oct.) the 13th, the DEC filed a petition for rehearing with FERC, the first step in a situation that is sure to end up in court (see NY DEC Appeals FERC Override of Millennium Pipe Decision). The DEC wants FERC to hold up on any further action with the pipeline project until their appeal is heard. Millennium doesn’t want to wait. In an escalation of its now outright war against the DEC, Millennium filed a request last Friday requesting FERC proceed by issuing a Notice to Proceed with construction of the pipeline. It needs to get built and completed by February, in time to begin flowing natural gas to the electric generating plant that is under construction and will be done by then…

NY Appeals Court Denies Constitution Pipe Motion for Rehearing

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (in liberal New York) has refused to re-hear the case against New York’s corrupt Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for its arbitrary and capricious refusal to grant a water crossing permit to Williams’ Constitution Pipeline. In August MDN brought you the sad news that the Second Circuit ruled against the Constitution Pipeline and their lawsuit against the Cuomo-corrupted DEC (see Court Rejects Constitution Pipe’s Case Against NY DEC; Now What?). On Sept. 1st Constitution filed a request for a rehearing at the Second Circuit (see Not Lights Out for Constitution Pipe Just Yet – Rehearing Request). Last week the court responded loud and clear: NO. By our reckoning Constitution has one card left to play, and they played it a few weeks ago: Request the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to overrule NY DEC because the DEC took more than a year to deliver its rejection of the permit (see Constitution Pipeline Asks FERC to Override NY DEC). If FERC does grant Constitution’s request to overrule the DEC, you can expect a legal challenge from the corrupt Cuomo machine. That’s how it works in dictatorships like New York…

Empire State Showdown: The NatGas Battle For New York

Marcellus Drilling News began in early 2009 after editor Jim Willis noticed an article in the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin detailing how a group of farmers in Broome County (near where Jim lives) had become overnight millionaires after signing leases with XTO Energy–to allow shale drilling on and under their land. Jim was stumped. He had never heard of gas drilling in the Southern Tier of New York, nor had he heard of XTO Energy. The issue of shale drilling appeared to be an interesting issue, full of technology, politics and money. Sounds like the makings of a soap opera! And what a soap it has been since that time–at least in New York State. Jim has followed the ups and downs (mostly downs) of attempting to launch shale drilling in the Empire State. When Andrew Cuomo was first elected governor, it appeared that he would (eventually) allow fracking. Now? He won’t even allow the state’s environmental agency to approve major interstate pipelines–projects most residents were unaware of just a few short years ago. Natural Gas Intelligence (NGI) ace reporter Jamison Cocklin recently wrote an in-depth series of articles focusing on New York and what’s happening with the gas industry in the state. It was/is an EXCELLENT series of articles. NGI has assembled the series, along with extra information, into a 16-page Special Report titled, “Empire State Showdown: The NatGas Battle for New York.” Below is a description of the report, with information about how you can download a copy…

Clean Energy Breaks Ground on CNG Fueling Station in the Bronx

Andrew J. Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy Fuels; Mark Riley, vice president, Clean Energy; Spiro Kattan, DSNY; and Steve Tufo, Baldor Food Transportation Manager, participate in the groundbreaking of Clean Energy’s Bronx, NY. CNG station.

Yesterday Clean Energy Fuels, the City of New York and various community leaders (i.e. politicians) held a ground-breaking ceremony to launch work on what will be the very first compressed natural gas (CNG) station in the Bronx. According to the Clean Energy press release: “The use of natural gas fuel, produced domestically in North America, reduces greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by up to 21 percent versus diesel and gasoline. Using natural gas is one of the ways New York City can meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent the next few decades.” The New York City Department of Transportation said it is “proud to be part of this unique groundbreaking, which will benefit the Hunts Point community and all of New York City.” So why does New York’s corrupt governor, Andrew Cuomo, continue to block pipelines that will bring greenhouse gas-reducing natural gas that benefits all communities to MDN’s beloved home state? Yesterday we told you about an upcoming hearing to discuss two natural gas-fired electric microgrids coming to Albany (see Public Hearing Next Wk on Albany, NY Fracked Gas-Fired Electric Plant). Now we read of this CNG fueling station coming in the Bronx. Where will all of the gas come from to feed these projects without new pipelines? Here’s the good news from Clean Energy about the Bronx CNG station…

Public Hearing Next Wk on Albany, NY Fracked Gas-Fired Electric Plant

In May MDN brought you the news that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had announced plans to construct a new “state-of-the-art, locally-sourced mini-power grid” that will connect to the statewide electric grid but will also be able to operate independently, to power the Empire State Plaza in Albany–a complex of buildings in downtown Albany housing much of New York State government (see NY Gov Cuomo Building New Fracked Gas Elec Plant to Power Albany!). The energy-efficient microgrid will supply 90% of the power for the 98-acre downtown Albany complex, and is expected to save the Plaza more than $2.7 million in annual energy costs. The project will also remove more than 25,600 tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere each year–the equivalent of taking more than 4,900 cars off the road–supporting New York’s goal to reduce emissions by 40 percent by 2030 from 1990 levels. The fuel that will power this engineering marvel? Fracked shale gas from the Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale. Yep. Cuomo is a disgusting hypocrite. He won’t allow pipelines to bring in fracked gas, but he’s building a microgrid to power state government that uses that same fracked gas. Next Wednesday, Oct. 25, the NY State Power Authority and the Office of General Services will host a public information meeting to discuss the microgrid. There will no discussion of IF the plant gets built because Dictator-in-Chief Cuomo has decreed it. The meeting will be to parcel out details to the hoi polloi, so the little folk know what to (shut up and) expect…
