EIA Feb. DPR: M-U Production Hits Ceiling, Haynesville Surges

    February 14, 2023February 14, 2023
    click for larger version

The Marcellus/Utica continues to produce about the same amount of natural gas that was produced in 2022–essentially capped at no more than 35.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of production. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) published its latest monthly Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) yesterday, and the report shows that, once again, M-U production (called “Appalachia” in the report) is still capped–at 35.0 Bcf/d in February. EIA predicts it will increase to 35.1 Bcf/d (adding a piddly 80 MMcf/d) in March 2023.

Multi-Year Test of Range Well in SWPA Proves No Air Pollution

    February 14, 2023February 14, 2023

Anti-drillers, with the assistance of biased “news” publications like the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, continually make false accusations against the shale industry in the southwestern Pennsylvania area, alleging that fracking is the cause of rare forms of cancer in children (see More Reckless Accusations that Shale Causes Cancer in SWPA Kids). In order to quell these false accusations, Range Resources commissioned and paid for two independent air monitoring studies. We told you about one of the studies, set up in Cecil Township (Washington County), back in June 2020 (see Range Resources Begins New Air Monitoring Test at SWPA Well Site). The results from that study are now in. According to third-party findings, the Cecil study showed no elevated concentration of air pollution in the area.

WV Bill Promoting New Gas-Fired Power Plants Nears Final Vote

    February 14, 2023February 14, 2023

As we previously reported, West Virginia Senate Bill (SB) 188 is aimed at making WV more competitive with its neighbors–Pennsylvania and Ohio–with respect to siting more gas-fired power plants in the state. The only problem is that the coal industry isn’t thrilled with some of the language in the bill (see WV Senate Bill to Promote Gas-Fired Power Rankles Coal Lobby). Even though Big Coal is not happy with it, SB 188 appears to be on a fast track to passing. The Senate passed the bill, and it’s now headed for a full House vote.

Help Wanted: New CFO for EQT – David Khani Leaving in July

    February 14, 2023February 14, 2023
    David Khani

Yesterday EQT announced the “planned transition” of David Khani, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the company, effective July 2023. The announcement does not say what Khani is transitioning to, but by all appearances, it means he’s leaving the company. The announcement also says EQT will be conducting a search to identify a successor and that Khani will stick around to be sure there is a smooth transition.

Surprise! Freeport LNG Exports 1st Cargo Since June 2022 Explosion

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023
    Kmarin Diamond

In a complete and total surprise, S&P Global Commodity Insights is reporting the very first post-explosion cargo of LNG exports has left the Freeport LNG facility along the Texas Gulf Coast and is en route to Port Said (Egypt). The BP-chartered Kmarin Diamond departed Freeport yesterday morning around 7:30 am. But (and here’s the big but)…don’t get your hopes up that this restarts a steady stream of ships departing from the Freeport facility. S&P says Freeport used supplies that were already in its storage tanks when the explosion and fire forced the terminal offline in June 2022. So this load was from LNG that’s been sitting around for eight months. When will more ships load up newly liquefied LNG at the facility?

9-Day Delay Before PA DEP Inspected Revolution Plant Explosion

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023

Residents living in the vicinity of Energy Transfer’s Revolution Pipeline cryogenic plant in Bulger (Washington County), PA, got a surprise “present” on Christmas morning. Around 7:30 am, residents report hearing an explosion, followed by a fire, at the plant used to separate NGLs (natural gas liquids, including ethane, propane, and butane) from the raw gas stream that flows through the Revolution gathering pipeline (see ET Revolution Cryogenic Processing Plant Explodes in PA on Xmas). Believe it or not, it took the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) nine full days, until Jan. 3, to actually show up on-site and investigate the situation.

ECA Marcellus Trust I Gives Investors 12.4 Cents per Unit in 4Q22

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023

ECA Marcellus Trust I, the royalty interest holder in some of the wells drilled and maintained by Greylock Energy in Greene County, PA, announced it would issue a payout (the equivalent of a dividend) to unitholders of 12.4 cents for 4Q22. That is down from the previous quarter when the Trust paid out 18 cents per unit. The company continues to hold back some profits ($135,000 in 4Q22) in order to build a cash reserve.

Joe Manchin “Furious” Over Biden Implementation of IRA Climate Bill

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023

We just have to say right up front, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia is either a lying sleazebag, or he’s really, really stupid. And neither option is very inspiring. Last year Manchin was lured into voting in favor of a massive government spending bill that previously was called the New Green Deal. It got renamed (misnamed) to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), to make it an easier sell to voters (see Tragedy: Joe Manchin Caves & Agrees to Big Green Build Back Better). Now Manchin is making noise to reporters that he’s “livid” and “furious” that the Bidenistas are actually following through and distributing money from the IRA the way they said they would–with money for rich millionaires who buy electric cars. Lying? Or stupid? Take your pick.

Group of DC Democrats Pushes US LNG Exports to Help Environment

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023

There are a (very) few Democrats in Washington, D.C., who still support natural gas. It seems most national Democrat leaders (in Congress and beyond) have been coopted by the radical left of the party and now endorse the national suicide of dumping fossil energy. But not all Dems. A group of so-called moderate Democrats who aligned themselves with Bill Clinton formed a think tank in 1989 called the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI). The PPI recently published an issue brief (report) called “The Climate Case for Expanding U.S. Natural Gas Export.” The report says expanding U.S. LNG exports can lower global greenhouse gas emissions significantly, especially if fugitive emissions of methane are deeply reduced. The report even supports the construction of more pipelines here in the U.S. Imagine that! A group of Dems who support natgas and LNG exports. It’s like spotting a unicorn in the wild.

NYMEX Natural Gas Price is Likely to Gyrate Wildly This Year

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023

Please sit down, buckle up, and keep your hands inside the ride at all times. No, these are not instructions before boarding a roller coaster at your favorite theme park. These are instructions for those who buy and sell natural gas in 2023. While the price of natgas has been bumping along at the mid-$2 range since late December, don’t be lulled into the siren song of “lower for longer.” According to the Wall Street Journal, the “buffers that keep America’s natural-gas price fluctuations at bay are eroding,” and you can expect wild gyrations in price to happen in 2023.

Fetterman Can’t Do the Job – NYT Says “Mental Health Challenges”

    February 13, 2023February 13, 2023

We’re going to say it right up front to everyone who voted for John Fetterman for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania: We told you so. We warned MDN readers Fetterman is not up to the job. He had a stroke, he should have pulled out of the race, but he didn’t. And now the left (including the Democrat cheerleaders of the New York Times) feel comfortable enough to admit the truth that some of us were speaking last fall–that Fetterman is not fit to be a U.S. Senator. Fetterman defeated the odious Republican Dr. Oz, so he’s served his purpose. Now it’s time to dump him and replace him with someone else. That appears to be the plan by the left.

FERC Finally Grants OK for Freeport LNG to Begin Loading Ships

    February 10, 2023February 10, 2023

Tuesday of last week, Freeport LNG, which has been out of operation since an explosion and fire in June 2022, asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for permission to begin re-introducing feedgas back into one of three liquefaction “trains” (units) at the facility. A day later, FERC agreed, and small amounts of gas began to flow (see FERC Approves Freeport LNG Request to Reintro Feedgas to 1st Train). Last Wednesday (a day later), Freeport said it was ready to begin loading ships with the LNG it’s producing and asked FERC for permission to do so. Yesterday FERC finally granted permission for loading ships–although Freeport still does not have permission to place any of its three LNG “trains” back into service officially. Not yet, anyway.
