Methane Detection Drones in M-U Too Pricey for Small Drillers

    January 26, 2021January 26, 2021

One of the aims of both drillers and environmentalists is to reduce the amount of methane escaping from pipelines and well pads into the atmosphere–so called “fugitive methane.” Environmentalists make wild claims that methane molecules floating around in the atmosphere are a gajillion times more potent in causing mythical global warming. Whatever. Drillers and pipeline companies want to capture and keep captured every last molecule so they can sell it! Thing is, there is a cost beyond which it doesn’t make sense to try and capture stray methane molecules.

Venture Global Proposes a New La. LNG Export Facility to FERC

    January 26, 2021January 26, 2021

This is an early test for how the Biden administration, specifically Biden’s pick to run the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Richard “Dick” Glick, will respond to requests for additional infrastructure related to fossil fuels. Last week Venture Global filed a “pre-filing” request with FERC ultimately looking for permission to build a major new LNG export facility next door to another facility (Calcasieu Pass Project) Venture Global is currently building. The new project is dubbed CP2 and will come with a (gasp) 87.5-mile greenfield pipeline.

Cornell University Drilling Wells Similar to Natural Gas Wells

    January 26, 2021January 26, 2021
    click for larger version

We don’t know much about geothermal heating and heat pumps. We do know the technology is often touted by people like Andrew Cuomo as one of the solutions that will allow us to magically quit using fuel oil and gas for heating. We were intrigued as we began to read about an experiment Cornell University is running to drill (yes drill) two geothermal wells. As we read about what they are doing, it dawned on us, what they’re doing is literally no different from drilling a natural gas well!

Weymouth, MA Compressor Station Now Online – Will it Stay Online?

    January 25, 2021January 25, 2021

Finally! The Weymouth compressor station, the final piece of the $452 million Atlantic Bridge expansion project that has been years in the making, is either now online and flowing gas, or will be within a day or two at most. However, given a vote last week by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) questioning whether or not enough consideration was given to protesting antis, a cloud remains as to how long (in a Biden-controlled FERC) the compressor will remain online.

Liens Served on PA/OH Landowner Property re Risberg Pipeline

    January 25, 2021January 25, 2021
    click for larger version

In March 2019 MDN brought you the news that Wood Group had been awarded a $34 million contract to build 28 miles of the 60-mile Risberg Pipeline from Crawford County, PA to Ashtabula County, OH (see Wood Wins $34M Contract to Build PA to OH Risberg Pipeline). The portion Wood built was new “greenfield” pipeline. The rest of the pipeline (32 miles) already existed and was repurposed. There is a controversy between Wood and RH energytrans (the owner) concerning payment, so Wood is going after the landowners whose property the pipeline traverses.

Maryland Bd of Public Works Considers Wetlands Permit for Gas Pipe

    January 25, 2021January 25, 2021

In December, the Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW), which has three members (two leftwing Democrats and RINO Gov. Larry Hogan), surprisingly approved a 10-inch, 6.83-mile pipeline for the Maryland portion of a 19+ mile project called the Del-Mar Energy Pathway Project, crossing both Delaware and Maryland (see Maryland Board of Public Works Approves Tiny Pipe in Eastern Shore). There is one final bit of that project (10.75 miles) that needs a wetlands permit in Maryland in order to build. BPW will make that decision on Wednesday.

Mountaineer NGL Storage Looks at Non-NGL Hydrogen Storage

    January 25, 2021January 25, 2021

Here’s an interesting twist. Just last week we told you about ongoing opposition from anti-fossil fuelers to a currently dormant project, the Mountaineer NGL Storage hub project in Monroe County, OH (see Opposition to Dormant Mountaineer NGL Storage Hub in Monroe, OH). Mountaineer wants to build an underground storage cavern to hold natural gas liquids, primarily ethane, for customers like PTT Global Chemical–if PTT ever decides to build a cracker plant in nearby Belmont County, OH. But what’s this? Now Mountaineer is considering an alternative–storing hydrogen.

Most Important Lawsuit in PA Shale History – Review & Fallout

    January 25, 2021January 25, 2021

It was exactly one year ago that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in THE most consequential lawsuit for Marcellus Shale drilling we’ve seen, a case called Briggs v Southwestern Energy (see HUGE NEWS: PA Supreme Court Keeps ‘Rule of Capture’ for Fracking). Now that the dust has settled, it’s a good time to take a look at the case and the lingering fallout from the case on both landowners and drillers in the Keystone State.

PA Gov. Wolf’s $2.3B RGGI Carbon Tax Scheme Gets 13K Comments

    January 25, 2021January 25, 2021

The Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) received some 13,000 public comments on its horrible plan to force PA residents to pay $2.36 billion in new energy taxes (a carbon tax) for electricity produced by coal and natural gas power plants–a scheme called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The plan would greatly reduce the number of gas-fired power plants operating in the state and create energy insecurity for the entire PJM portion of the national electricity grid.

Biden Appoints Richard “Dick” Glick FERC Chair – Forget Pipelines

    January 22, 2021January 22, 2021
    Richard Glick becomes FERC Chairman

Democrat Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Commissioner Richard “Dick” Glick, to the best of our knowledge, has voted against every single new or expanded gas/oil pipeline to come before FERC using the same broken-record response: man-made global warming. Yesterday President Biden appointed Glick as the new Chairman of FERC. We seriously doubt any new pipeline projects will now get approved, period. Glick’s chairmanship also threatens existing projects like Mountain Valley Pipeline and PennEast Pipeline.

FERC Tables Vote to Allow PennEast Pipe to Split in 2 Phases

    January 22, 2021January 22, 2021

With Richard “Dick” Glick as the new Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), life just got harder for the PennEast Pipeline project. Not impossible, but certainly harder. On Tuesday FERC gave PennEast a little bit of love when it turned down a request by a Pennsylvania landowner that PennEast not be allowed to use eminent domain to cross the landowner’s property. But also on Tuesday FERC removed from its agenda a final decision on whether or not to approve PennEast’s request to split the project into two phases.

FERC Approves Compressor Upgrade for New England Gas Pipeline

Westbrook XPress Project map (click for larger version)

Fortunately, there are some key pipeline projects already approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) that don’t require any further approvals (or interference) by FERC commissioners. One such project is the Westbrook XPress Project, part of TC Energy’s Portland Natural Gas Transmission System (PNGTS). Westbrook XPress will flow an extra 124 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of Marcellus/Utica natural gas into New England. On Tuesday TC Energy asked FERC for permission to commence construction. This morning FERC approved it.

Opposition to Dormant Mountaineer NGL Storage Hub in Monroe, OH

    January 22, 2021January 22, 2021

Last fall Mountaineer NGL Storage, a $500 million project in Monroe County to build underground storage for ethane and other NGLs, asked Ohio to cancel a key permit for the project (see Mountaineer Asks Ohio to Cancel NGL Storage Hub Permits). Our understanding is that until PTT Global Chemical makes a final decision to build an ethane cracker in nearby Belmont County, OH, Mountaineer is not ready to proceed. The two projects will move along together. When PTT announces, Mountaineer will reapply for the permit. Yet anti-fossil fuelers actively continue to make a fuss, making untrue statements about the project and its impacts on the region’s environment.

PA DEP Using ePermits for Erosion & Sedimentation to Avoid New Law

    January 22, 2021January 22, 2021

After literally *years* of complaints that simple permits in Pennsylvania required in drilling new shale wells–like a Chapter 102 Erosion and Sedimentation permit–are taking two, three, even six to eight months for an approval (instead of the law-mandated 14 days), the Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) is finally doing something about it. Why? They’ve just received a swift kick in the seat of the pants.
