IHS Markit Says New Conventional Drilling is Pretty Much Dead

    October 2, 2019October 2, 2019

IHS Markit, a global analytics company that tracks data in the oil and gas industry, recently published a new report titled “IHS Markit Conventional Exploration Results in Early 2018 Through 2019: No Rebound in Activity or Results.” Although we don’t have a copy of the full report, we do have IHS Markit’s excellent summary of the report. Here’s how we summarize their summary: Conventional (vertical only) drilling for oil and gas is pretty much dead and will remain dead–and shale killed it.

Appalachian Basin Upstream O&G Report: Less Drilling, EQT Rumors

    October 1, 2019October 1, 2019

Our good friend Charlie Schliebs, managing director of Stone Pier Capital, recently circulated a PowerPoint presentation/report from James Knobloch Petroleum Consultants that does an expert job at compiling current data and other valuable information on the status and trends for the oil and gas industry in the Appalachian Basin. Some of the juicy tidbits from the slide deck and accompanying commentary from Charlie: Drilling activity in the Marcellus/Utica *is* slowing down at the moment, but this downturn is different than previous downturns. Also, rumors are swirling about EQT. And, worries about competition coming from the Permian.

EQT Looks to Sublease HQ Space – Leaving Downtown Pittsburgh?

    October 1, 2019October 1, 2019

EQT Corp. is offering to sublease “more space” at its downtown Pittsburgh headquarters building. Back in April, before the change in leadership at the top, EQT offered up to 46,000 square feet of space to lease at its massive 250,000 square foot building known as EQT Plaza, located at 625 Liberty Ave. (see EQT Looking for New HQ Building in Pittsburgh). At the time the company was rumored to be looking for a new, smaller HQ somewhere in downtown Pittsburgh, which we chalked up to a negotiating tactic. The rumor now is that EQT is looking to lease even more than the original 46K sq ft, and possibly leave downtown Pittsburgh.

2 Important Supreme Court Cases with Big Impact on M-U Pipelines

    October 1, 2019October 1, 2019

Two very important (perhaps we should say critically important) cases now sit before the U.S. Supreme Court–cases that have a direct bearing on the Marcellus/Utica region. Both cases deal with pipelines. The first case we’ve written about before: Dominion Energy’s Atlantic Coast Pipeline case to overturn a nutty decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit that judicially creates a new law that pipelines can’t cross under the Appalachian Trail without (no kidding) an Act of Congress. The other case involves the Hoopa Valley Indian Tribe in California–a case that has profound implications for the Constitution Pipeline from Pennsylvania into New York.

NYSE Suspends Superior Energy Stock Trading; OTC for Now

    October 1, 2019October 1, 2019

Superior Energy Services serves the drilling, completion and production-related needs of oil and gas companies worldwide through a number of subsidiaries including Wild Well Control, International Snubbing Services, and SPN Well Services. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) warned Superior in August that its share price had fallen below $1/share for more than 30 consecutive days and was in danger of delisting. Superior said at the time they have a plan to boost the per-share price. However, NYSE delisted their stock as of last Friday (six weeks later) and the stock now trades over-the-counter.

New Group Forms to Fight Back Against Radical Fossil Fuel Haters

    October 1, 2019October 1, 2019

It’s time for the oil and gas industry (i.e. fossil fuels) to begin fighting for our right to exist. Irrational fossil fuel haters like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren utter the most outrageous lies and pledge to ban fracking nationwide. It’s now time to go on offense–to respond and set the record straight. It’s time to tell the truth about fossil fuels and the vital role they play now, and will play for years to come. A newly-formed group called The Empowerment Alliance (TEA) is doing just that.

Some big news to share. NextEra Energy Partners, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy which owns and operates solar and wind projects, as well as natural gas pipelines, announced early this morning they have cut a deal to buy Meade Pipeline Co LLC for $1.37 billion. Meade Pipeline is the name for a joint venture between several companies that own 39.2% of what is called the Central Penn Line pipeline system, otherwise known as Williams’ Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline–a major new pipeline that has single-handedly lifted the price drillers (and consequently landowners) receive for northeastern PA Marcellus gas.

Empire Energy Continues to Hold Marc/Utica Acreage in NY State

    September 30, 2019September 30, 2019

Every now and again we like to check in on a company that continues to keep the faith with respect to shale drilling in New York State. Empire Energy, according to its website, owns “large scale shale acreage” in the Marcellus, Utica and Bakken. Most of Empire’s Marcellus/Utica shale acreage is in New York State–where shale drilling is (so far) not allowed. According to a recent press release, Empire continues to hold its NY shale acreage “at minimal cost.”

A Few Old Hippies Protest Orange Co NatGas Plant on Youth Day

    September 30, 2019April 20, 2022

Last October Competitive Power Ventures’ 680-megawatt CPV Valley Energy Center in Wawayanda (Orange County), NY fired up and began producing, using Marcellus gas, enough electricity to power 600,000 liberal NY homes (see CPV Marcellus-Fired Elec Plant in Orange County Now Online!). New York Gov. Cuomo tried his best to block the plant from going online, but failed. It’s been operating safely ever since. But that doesn’t stop a few dedicated protesters from showing up when there’s an excuse to do so, just to keep their desire to shut it down alive in local media.

WVU Engineer Gets $2.5M Grant to Study NatGas Power Plant Boilers

    September 30, 2019September 30, 2019
    Debangsu Bhattacharyya, WVU

Quick question: What is the “heart” of an electric power generating plant? The turbines that spin and make the electricity, right? Actually, no! The “heart” of a powergen plant is, according to West Virginia University engineering professor Debangsu Bhattacharyya…the boiler. Say what?! That’s right. The boiler produces the steam to turn the turbine and if you can improve the efficiency of the boiler (prevent it from breaking down), you increase the efficiency of the whole plant. Dr. Bhattacharyya has just received a $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy to study the use of AI (artificial intelligence) to monitor and improve the performance of boilers in natgas (and coal) power plants.

EIA’s International Energy Outlook 2019 – Mandatory Reading

    September 30, 2019September 30, 2019

Last week MDN published a post from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (based on EIA data) that points out worldwide energy use over the next 30 years will increase another 50%, and most of it will still be provided by (yep), fossil fuels (see World Energy Use Up 50% Next 30 Years, Powered by Fossil Fuels). Forbes writer Jude Clemente noticed the EIA post as well. He dug in to the EIA’s “International Energy Outlook 2019” report on which the data is based and declares the full report is, “a glorious read, and one that I deem mandatory for all Americans.” We concur! Forthwith is the full report, along with Clemente’s observations about it.
