ShaleNavigator Service Adds Frack Waste Facilities Layer to Maps

As many MDN readers know, MDN editor Jim Willis partners with Ed Camp from ShaleNavigator, using ShaleNavigator’s top-notch mapping software to create the marvelous maps found in the Marcellus and Utica Shale Databook series. Ed maps the most recent round of permits issued (over the previous four months) on county maps, showing driller name and location for each volume of the Databook. But the maps show a lot more than just permit locations–like major natural gas pipelines, the locations of compressor stations and over a dozen other “layers” available to users of the ShaleNavigator service.

You can now add one more layer to the service: the location of waste facilities used by Marcellus and Utica Shale drillers. You may also recall that the most recent volume of the Databook, Volume 3, contains that very information: a complete list (with addresses and phone numbers) for waste facilities. Ed has used the location data for those waste facilities and added a new layer for users of his excellent service. The press release is below. Be sure to give ShaleNavigator a try by signing up for a free 7-day trial account

You're InvitedPlease join me (MDN editor Jim Willis) at the Northeast Conference for Excellence on March 20, 2014 in Pittsburgh at the Westin Convention Center. The Conference for Excellence is hosted by the Oil & Gas Awards organization. I’m proud to say that I helped create this year’s conference program and I will be moderating two of the sessions–one on drilling and completions, and another on environmental health and safety. I would LOVE to see you at this event.

This is an “industry” event–by and for those who work in the oil and gas industry, particularly in the Marcellus and Utica Shale, from upstream to midstream to downstream. Your cost to attend? Zero. But, there is a catch…

MDN Quoted in Bloomberg News Article on Dan Rice & Rice Energy

You may think by reading MDN for any length of time that it’s primary writer, Jim Willis, is a bit of a braggart–a show-off–given that he writes exactly what he thinks, even when he knows it may not be popular or what a majority of others think. He doesn’t do it purposely to be controversial, and Lord knows he doesn’t seek the limelight or attention. Jim simply wants to get the truth out about shale drilling in the northeast and combat the untruth he perceives is rampant on the vital issue of Marcellus and Utica drilling. He likes to think of himself as a humble guy (don’t laugh!). So he feels a bit uncomfortable bringing you this news, but figures if he doesn’t share it, no one else will.

Last Monday, Feb. 10, Jim was called by Bloomberg News reporter Brendan Coffey to ask about MDN’s articles and knowledge on Rice Energy and Dan Rice III. Jim happily accommodated Mr. Coffey and chatted with him for about 20 minutes. Mr. Coffey mentioned that he may quote MDN in the article. Whereupon Jim pretty much forgot about it. But then last Thursday, Feb. 13, Coffey’s article turned up on the Bloomberg wire and low and behold, MDN (and Jim) were mentioned pretty high up in the article. Here is that article:

Databook Vol. 3: Marcellus Well Decline Rates, Waste Facilities & More

2013 Databook Vol 3MDN is extremely proud to announce the release of the Marcellus and Utica Shale Databook 2013, Volume 3, covering permits and happenings in northeast shale drilling from September to December 2013. Make no mistake, we are blowing the trumpet and blowing it loud. In this volume is something totally unique and extremely important: a new section on Marcellus shale well decline rates. That is, we tackle the topic of quickly, and how much, does production for the average Marcellus shale well taper off. Just as important, how much will the average well produce over it’s lifetime, and how long is that lifetime? Based on data from more than 3,700 Marcellus wells, two experts have written and contributed this new section for the Databook–and you need it if you need reliable, accurate information on what to expect in the way of production (and royalties) for a Marcellus well.

In addition, we have compiled a directory of the 150+ shale waste processing facilities–for both wastewater and drill cuttings–most used by Marcellus and Utica Shale drillers. We give you the list sorted two ways: by geography and by facility type (centralized recycling center, injection well, landfill). As always, the heart of the Databook is a series of maps–one for each county in the northeast with active shale drilling–showing where permits were issued for the last four months of 2013. These maps are your guide to where drilling either has already begun–or soon will. Here’s the press release MDN and partner ShaleNavigator issued this morning about the newly release Databook:

  • A Brief Word About MDN Site Technical Problems

technical difficulties please stand byDear MDN Readers:

Over the past several days the MDN website has, at times, slowed down significantly and in some cases was unresponsive and not loading. In addition, for some time now the site has not “remembered” logged in subscribers who revisit the site, causing them to have to log in again repeatedly each day. My profound apologies.

Last night I had the site moved to a new server and it seems to be responding well today (at least so far). I have also found and corrected the issue causing logged in subscribers to not be remembered on subsequent visits.

Please be on the look-out today and report to me any strange behavior (can’t load the site, still having to log in repeatedly). I’m doing my best to resolve these technical issues and appreciate your patience and help.

    Kind regards,
    Jim Willis
    Editor, MDN

    On a personal note…

travel dayToday (Friday) is a travel day for MDN editor Jim Willis, so there will be no regularly scheduled news updates today. Don’t worry! I will catch you up on the all of the latest news that matters for the Marcellus and Utica on Monday.

In lieu of today’s news, I would like to give you a brief update on the state of MDN and where things will go in 2014. It is a rare “personal note” where I pull back the curtain and discuss with you what happens backstage…

Social Media Comes to Shale Plays, Including the Marcellus/Utica

The shale energy industry is getting its own Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn platform–all rolled into one. Not long ago MDN was tapped on the shoulder by the folks at Oilpro.com, an online community of oil & gas professionals interested in connecting with colleagues. The shale social media site is only a few months old but has already taken off and attracted something like 30,000 active users–which is an astonishing feat in our industry! Oilpro.com is founded by the same people who founded (and later sold) Rigzone.com–so the people behind it have energy chops and know their way around a drilling rig.

Below is information about Oilpro.com–what it is and what it does. MDN encourages you to check it out and consider joining. We did!…

    See You in 2014

MDN has noticed the shale drilling news…has…..really……..slowed……….down. Which is to be expected. A lot of people will take off from Wednesday the 1st through the rest of the week. We are too. We will keep an eye on the news and if anything major happens with respect to the Marcellus/Utica, we’ll issue an update. Otherwise, we’ll see you next Monday, Jan. 6th. We want to take this opportunity to thank our readers–especially our paid subscribers. We look forward to serving you in 2014.

We’re planning a website update in 2014–and more products, so stay tuned! If you ever thought, “I wish MDN would publish X or create Y,” we would like to hear about it. Drop us a line at: jim@marcellusdrilling.com. Now is the time to hit us up while we’re planning the next 12 months.

While we’re “on break” over the next few days, we’ll be working on Volume 3 of the Marcellus and Utica Shale Databook, which will be published in January. We’re going to make a big announcement that soon. Stay tuned!

A very happy New Year to all.
