18 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 14-20

The wild roller coaster continues of up, down, up, down, up, down. Last week the number of permits issued to drill new shale wells is down again–to 18 total. Pennsylvania had 16 new permits last week, nine for Repsol and three for Coterra Energy. All of Repsol and Coterra’s permits issued for Susquehanna County. West Virginia had two new permits, one each for Southwestern Energy and Antero Resources, in Marshall and Doddridge counties. Ohio? A big, fat, goose egg. No new shale permits issued last week in the Buckeye State.

Repsol Marcellus Gas to Feed Plaquemines LNG Exports in La.

Spanish oil and gas company Repsol, with major assets in the northeast Pennsylvania Marcellus, has signed a deal to provide Venture Global’s Louisiana-based Plaquemines LNG export project with 18.25 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per year of natural gas beginning in 2024. Will the Respol gas come from the Marcellus? We think so. We outline our theory below.

44 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Feb 7-13

Last week the number of new shale permits issued for the three M-U states more than doubled from the previous week. Four weeks ago there were 61 new shale drilling permits issued in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Three weeks ago that number fell to 33. Two weeks ago the permit number fell again, to just 20. Last week? The number bounced back up to 44 new permits. PA issued 24 new permits, OH issued 18 permits, and WV issued 2 new permits.

33 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Jan 24-30

Our apologies that this latest weekly permit update is a day late. Normally we issued these updates on Wednesdays. Yesterday the Pennsylvania database we use to locate information on new permits issued was throwing an error. We alerted the PA Dept. of Environmental Protection, which maintains the database, and they got it fixed sometime last night. So we’re back! Our thanks to the programmers at the DEP.

The total number of permits across PA, OH and WV last week were down by about half from the week before. There were 33 new permits issued last week vs. 61 two weeks ago.

With the ever-changing landscape of mergers and acquisitions in the shale industry, including here in the Marcellus/Utica, it’s helpful to check in every now and again with a “top 10” list. This time our top 10 list is for the largest shale drillers/operators in Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Business Times recently updated its “Book of Lists” for active PA shale drillers, all 47 of them. We have a quick list of the top 10 below.

Sale of Rockdale PA Assets to Repsol Closes – $220M Cash, $2M Debt

In September MDN broke the news that Rockdale Marcellus had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania (see NEPA Driller Rockdale Marcellus Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy). Earlier this month we told you that Repsol had won an auction to buy the assets for $220 million in cash, plus the assumption of $2 million in debt owed to trade creditors (see Repsol Buys Rockdale PA Assets Out of Bankruptcy for $222M). The deal was sealed yesterday. Repsol now owns Rockdale’s 66 producing wells on 42,897 net acres in three northeast PA counties producing ~110 Mmcf/d (million cubic feet per day).

Repsol Buys Rockdale PA Assets Out of Bankruptcy for $222M

In September MDN broke the news that Rockdale Marcellus had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania (see NEPA Driller Rockdale Marcellus Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy). On Dec. 16 an auction for Rockdale’s assets was held in Dallas, Texas. The highest bidder and winner was Repsol, buying substantially all of Rockdale’s assets for $220 million in cash, plus the assumption of $2 million in debt owed to trade creditors. Last Wednesday, Dec. 29, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania approved the auction results and sale to Repsol.

There was a healthy number of new permits issued in all three actively drilling Marcellus/Utica states last week. In Pennsylvania, 14 new shale well permits were issued across the state. In Ohio, five new shale permits were issued, four of them to a single driller (Ascent Resources) in a single county (Jefferson). West Virginia came roaring back after getting skunked with no permits two weeks ago. WV issued 10 new shale permits last week with five going to a single well pad in Monongalia County.

Last week Pennsylvania issued 21 permits to drill new shale wells. Most of the permits went to two well pads, one in Butler County drilled by PennEnergy Resources and the other in Tioga County drilled by Repsol. Ohio issued six new permits, three to Encino Energy, two to Utica Resource Operating, and one to Ascent Resources. West Virginia, for the second week in a row, issued just one new permit. Last week’s WV permit went to Tug Hill Operating in Marshall County.

Last week Pennsylvania was back on its game, issuing 22 permits to drill new shale wells. Most of the permits in PA were for three well pads by three different operators: Seneca Resources, Repsol, and EQT. Ohio issued just two new permits to Gulfport Energy for the same well pad in Belmont County. West Virginia issued four new permits, three of them to Southwest Energy and one to Antero Resources.

Last week both Pennsylvania and West Virginia issued permits to drill new shale wells. Ohio remained skunked for a fifth week in a row. PA issued 18 new shale permits, mainly in the western part of the state (a few in the northeast). WV issued 7 new shale permits, all of them for the same pad being drilled by EQT in Wetzel County. This is the second week in a row EQT scored all of WV’s new permits, and the second week in a row they were all in Wetzel County.

Last week both Pennsylvania and West Virginia issued permits to drill new shale wells. Ohio remained skunked for a fourth week in a row. PA issued 30 new shale permits–one of the highest weekly tallies we’ve seen. PA’s permits were issued for wells on 11 pads, meaning there were a number of multi-well permits issued. WV issued 7 new shale permits, all of them for the same pad being drilled by EQT in Wetzel County.

Two of three Marcellus/Utica states received permits to drill new shale wells last week. Pennsylvania issued 13 new permits, almost all of them in the dry gas northeastern part of the state. Ohio issued 11 new permits, in the center of the Utica play. West Virginia’s shale industry got skunked last week–no new permits. It’s been quite a while since that’s happened in WV.

Ohio received just 2 new permits last week, both for Ascent Resources on the same pad.
