Anti-Drilling CA Group Assists Residents Near Halcon OH Drill Site

Yesterday MDN told you about Halcon Resources drilling another two wells at the Kibler site near Lordstown (Trumbull County), OH (see Halcon Drilling 2 More Wells Near Lordstown, OH). Seems there’s a bit more to the story than the neighbors being concerned about nighttime noise and lights. They’re also concerned about air quality, and residents of a nearby trailer park are working with an anti-drilling, anti-fossil fuel company from California called Global Community Monitor to do air quality sampling to ensure they aren’t breathing in dangerous levels of pollutants.

MDN asks: Why even bother with the pretense of testing? Global Community Monitor has already pre-determined what the outcome will be. Just announce the results now–that drilling anywhere at any time will kill the planet…

Youngstown Hypocrites “Adjust” Language in Frack Ban Measure

In a transparently hypocritical move, anti-fossil fuel agitators who are placing a referendum on the ballot in Youngstown, OH for a second time this year have removed language that would have prevented one of the city’s biggest employers and businesses, Vallourec Star (manufactures steel pipes) from selling its pipes to the drilling industry. All other businesses that sell to the natural gas industry–you’re toast under the ban.

You see, it’s OK to profit from the drilling industry, it’s OK to use the cheap natural gas that comes from the drilling industry to heat homes and use for cooking–just don’t drill anywhere near me for that gas. It’s called “good for thee but not for me.” It’s hypocrisy on glorious display. If the dunderheads prevail in hoodwinking enough voters to pass the ban, we hope and trust Vallourec will still make good on their threat to move outside of the city limits–denying the city millions in tax revenue. And we trust the anti-frackers will turn off the natural gas spigot heating their homes–after all, it comes from fracking. Throw another log on the fire Wilma!…

Bobby Vagt Out as Pres of Heinz Endowments – Fracking Connection?

In August MDN told you about a shake-up taking place at the Heinz Endowments with the firing of “longtime head” of environmental grant making for the Heinz Endowments, Caren Glotfelty (see Heinz Endowments Fires Head of Enviro Grants – Change Coming?). The story is an important one because of the role played by the Heinz Endowments in funding anti-fracking causes. Earlier this year, president of the Heinz Endowments, Bobby Vagt, dared to strike up first a conversation, then a pact, with drillers and a few other brave environmental organizations to found the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (see Important: Drillers & Enviros Form New Group, Launch Cert Program). Apparently Vagt’s “sell-out” to the drilling industry was the beginning of the end and the enviro-nut long knives came out for him (see Heinz Endowments President Owns $1.2M in Kinder Morgan Stock).

In what appears to be a move by one of the Endowments’ board members–one of the Heinz boys, Andre–Vagt announced he is “retiring” from his job as president of the Endowments. Looks like the long knives finally found their mark…

PA Anti-Fracking Gatecrashers Outside, Real Work Gets Done Inside

We know everyone likes a good story, so… Once upon a time there were four anti-drillers: Craig Stevens (from Dimock, PA, he of the little brown jug that supposedly contains contaminated drinking water from his well but he won’t let anyone test it); Ray Kemble (also from Dimock, PA); Robert Lee McCaslin (from Bath, NY); and Randy Moyer (from Portage, PA). None of these anti-drillers apparently have day jobs because they travel around the northeast like groupies following their favorite rock band–except in reverse. This band of merry anti-frackers travel about the countryside trying to gatecrash pro-drilling meetings. (Every now and again they do attend a meeting of the anti-drilling faithful–just to get some good juju to keep going.)

Anywho…our merry band of four anti-frackers descended on a peaceful meeting of elected PA officials in far western PA yesterday, and the Washington Observer-Reporter was there to report on the four anti-frackers outside instead of the 100 elected officials inside…

More on “Pro-Drilling” Conversion of Gasland II Star from Dimock

A few days ago we told you that one of Josh Fox’s stars in Gasland II, Victoria Switzer, has changed sides and now wants to work with the drilling industry to ensure the air is clean in Susquehanna County, PA (see Gasland II Starlet Leaves Anti-Drilling Behind, Adopts “Realism”). This is a huge problem for the anti-drilling movement, a movement that is typically shrill and frankly, unthinking. We now have at least a few people who, while they don’t like natural gas drilling going on around them, are willing to have a cogent, what they call “respectful” dialog about it. They also recognize shall drilling is here to stay–they are realists. Finally, some people on the other side of the issue we can talk to!

PA Former Sec. Krancer: Frack Moratorium “Worse than Misguided”

MDN editor Jim Willis had the great pleasure of meeting and speaking with former PA Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) Sec. Michael Krancer at Shale Insight 2013 a few weeks ago. Jim doesn’t mind telling you what he told Sec. Krancer to his face: “I’m a huge fan!” Krancer did some great work at the DEP during his too-short tenure. Since then, Krancer has moved on to private practice in Philadelphia, working on energy law for powerhouse law firm Blank Rome.

Sec. Krancer minces no words, which is what we love about him. He’s also extremely smart. And, he’s no fan of recently introduced legislation by PA Sen. Jim Ferlo who wants to ban fracking in Pennsylvania–Ferlo calls it a moratorium but it’s “open-ended,” meaning it’s really a ban (see PA Dems Go Over the Cliff – Introduce Statewide Frack Ban Bill). Krancer penned a devastating rebuttal to Ferlo’s bill and indeed to obtuse anti-fossil fuel advocates throughout Pennsylvania. Sec. Debra Winger: Vote Early & Vote Often – Against Fracking in NY

Hollywood actress Debra Winger, who not only has an apartment in New York City but owns a “farm” in Sullivan County, NY (Upstate for the uninitiated), is on a mission. Her mission is to get her other Hollywood and Downstate pals that also own a place in Sullivan County to register to vote there. Register once? Register twice? We’re not sure she’s advocating voter fraud (although she may be).

Winger wants Downstaters to register to vote in Sullivan County so they can pack local town boards with anti-drillers–just in case Gov. Andrew “Spineless” Cuomo suddenly grows a spine and allows shale drilling…

Strange Twist: Rep. Jesse White Calls His Own Words “Hate Speech”

For some time MDN has chronicled the sad story of western PA Rep. Jesse White, an anti-driller with a grudge against Range Resources who turned to using fake online IDs in order to trash talk his own constituents (see How the Mighty Have Fallen: PA Rep White Admits Guilt, Not Sorry). White eventually (months later) saw the error of his ways when he was outed at Harvard summer school and his “peers” told him “Jesse, you done wrong” (see PA Rep. White Says Fake IDs were “Error in Judgment”).

So get this. Some of White’s constituents, rightly outraged that he is still in office, put his own fake ID words on a big poster board and showed it at an information table set up at the local Fall Festival at an area park. Local Democrat officials were miffed that someone had the audacity to tell the truth about one of their own–in public! Some of the local Dems resigned from their respective boards in protest over the booth. Jesse called his own words on that poster “hate speech.” Huh? That’s right–the fact that someone took his exact words and showed them to local residents (because the media continues to fail to do its job), and White said it’s hate speech. Yeah Jesse, we’re glad you agree that what you previously said is indeed “hate speech”…

Walkin’ and Talkin’ and Prayin’…To Seneca Lake?

Gasland II Starlet Leaves Anti-Drilling Behind, Adopts “Realism”

What’s this…one of the stars of Gasland II, someone who trash-talked the shale drilling industry in Dimock, PA has changed sides? Yep. Well, sort of. Victoria Switzer has given up what she calls “tunnel vision” and has adopted “realism.” She says, “Realism is good.” She no longer calls for a halt to drilling in PA and instead wants to ensure it’s done safely–by working with industry and regulators. Welcome to logic and sanity! Glad to have you on our side.

Watch out Josh Fox: Switzer is not the only former anti-driller now whistling a different tune…

MA Dems Propose Frack Ban on Non-Existent Shale Drilling – Duh!

Anti-drilling nutters in Massachusetts have introduced legislation to ban fracking in the state, even though there’s no frackable shale to be found. Why do it? To make a political statement, of course. Symbolism over substance reigns supreme in the Bay State controlled by you-know-which political party.

So, you might expect the following editorial that strongly criticizes said politicians for proposing a frack ban bill, and criticizing the state for supporting alternative energy sources only (sources that require huge infusions of taxpayer money to make them work), to be an editorial penned by MDN. What’s Missing in Latest Duke “Radioactive” Study? Real Science

Those crazy, anti-drilling kids at Duke University are at it again. They released a “study” in a “peer-reviewed” journal yesterday (a study funded in part by the anti-drilling Park Foundation) that took samples from a creek downstream from a wastewater treatment plant that used to (but no longer does) treat Marcellus fracking wastewater. Republican Michael Krancer put an end to frack wastewater treatment by such facilities in early 2011, something the Rendell administration couldn’t or wouldn’t do. Krancer and the Marcellus Shale Coalition said municipal plants processing frack wastewater was creating an issue (see PA DEP, Marcellus Shale Coalition Admit Drilling Wastewater Likely Contaminating Drinking Water). So the Park/Duke kids sampled a single creek before the practice had ended and found, not surprisingly, high (but not dangerous) levels of radioactivity in the stream bed. In other words, they’re reporting what we’ve known for the past three years.

What do the headlines in hundreds of newspapers and online sources (with lazy reporters) blare out today? Fracking causes radioactivity in streams and rivers (plural) in Pennsylvania. Even though the Duke study only looks at a single location in a single creek and the data predates when the practice ended. Real science would have investigated multiple wastewater treatment plants, not just cherry-picking one. Real science is not funded by an avowed anti-drilling organization like the Park Foundation. And real science would have pointed out frack wastewater treatment at these plants ended several years ago. But then, no one ever accused Park/Duke kids of performing real science…

Muskingum Watershed Taken to Court by Anti-Frackers (Yawn)

MDN has long chronicled the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District’s (MWCD) challenges with selling a relative thimble-full of its vast water supplies to Utica Shale drillers. Not only are they now selling water, they’ve leased a good number of acres for drilling–some of it under lakes and reservoirs. That really ticks off the eco-nuts.

Anti-frackers have thrown tantrums and have done their darnedest to stop the MWCD from allowing drilling and from selling water to frackers–for a time they even bullied them into a retreat (see Muskingum Watershed Reverses Decision to Sell Water to Drillers)–but ultimately the anti-frackers have failed. So now it’s off to court to see if they can convince a liberal judge somewhere to put the breaks on progress in Ohio…

OH Antis Force Change in Chemical Reporting, Everyone Less Safe

Ohio’s anti-drillers, in their zeal to needle the drilling industry, have just put everyone who lives near active drill sites at more risk than they once were. Following state law, drillers (until now) have filed a list of the chemicals they store and use for fracking with the Ohio Department of Environmental Resources (ODNR). Local first responders–police and firefighters–could then electronically retrieve that information from the ODNR website for any given well if an incident occurred, like a fire. But anti-drillers asked the federal government to intervene and that has now happened. The feds have said drillers must file paperwork listing the chemicals stored and used directly with local counties and municipalities.

Now, firefighters will have to haul out a paper file from some filing cabinet and rifle through it if there’s any kind of emergency–instead of using the much faster online version from ODNR. Congratulations Ohio anti-drillers! You’ve just made everyone in Ohio more unsafe…

Handful of Medina, OH Anti-Drillers Oppose Ethane Pipeline

A handful of residents in Medina, OH are opposing an update to a pumping station that sits on the Mariner West pipeline. Sunoco Logistics owns and operates the pipeline which they are converting to handle ethane, a natural gas liquid. The plan is to pipe ethane from the Marcellus and Utica Shale region all the way to Sarnia (Ontario), Canada to an ethane cracker plant located there.

Local anti-drillers in Medina don’t like fracking (even though it’s perfectly safe) so they’ve decided to focus on stopping the pipeline as a deterrent to more fracking…

Shale Insight Philadelphia: Day One (Tuesday)

MDN editor Jim Willis is in Philadelphia for the next few days attending the Marcellus Shale Coalition’s Shale Insight event. Jim is taking copious notes, as he does when visiting such events–so you’ll get to read about it in the coming days. Yesterday (Tuesday) was the “pre-conference” day. Of special interest was the Technology Showcase where established and up-and-coming companies shared their technologies for treating water, dealing with silica dust and a variety of other applications. If you’re “into shale,” it was fascinating.

Rather than recount it all for you right now, we’ll share a good story (very fair and balanced, surprisingly) written by the Philadelphia Inquirer who had a reporter on hand. The write-up does a good job of recounting the Technology Showcase, and in forecasting the coming protest from anti-drillers. One thing we can tell you–security is really, really tight at the Philadelphia Convention Center. They clearly believe there’s going to be a sizable crowd of antis parading out front…
