Study Says NE States with Fracking Have Better Credit Ratings

The Kroll Bond Rating Agency has just released an update to a report they originally authored in January of last year titled, Fracking the Marcellus and Utica Basins: Potential Credit Implications. While not taking a position on whether or not fracking in the Marcellus and Utica Shale is good or bad per se, they do say their analysis shows fracking in the Marcellus and Utica Shale is very good for the credit ratings of municipal and state governments where fracking is allowed. Fracking is also jobs-creating engine according to the independent report.

Man Bites Dog: Pittsburgh Law Firm Opens Operation in Houston

In the news business, no one wants to run a story along the lines of “dog bites man”—that’s not news. But when the story is “man bites dog,” that’s news. This is one of those stories. Hardly a week goes by that MDN does not read about a law office expanding it’s practice somewhere in the Marcellus or Utica Shale region, many times it’s a branch office of a large Houston, TX law firm opening up in the Marcellus region. Such announcements are (let us be honest) self-serving advertisements to try and get business. Nothing wrong with that! But it’s not something MDN readers will be interested in reading about.

This time, however, a law office expansion is news. Why? Because it’s not a big Houston energy law firm setting up shop in Pittsburgh, but the other way around. For MDN, the story points out how the Marcellus Shale has changed the energy game in the U.S. and is, ever so gradually, shifting the center of power in the energy universe from Houston to Pittsburgh…

Starting Salary for Petroleum Engineer Nears 6 Figures

In a story that thanks Schulmberger for its generous donations to West Virginia University ($18 million and counting), we learn about the astonishing starting salaries for petroleum engineers coming out of WVU and across the country. How astonishing?

According to PayScale, starting salaries for petroleum engineers fresh out of school: $98,000 a year. That’s 50% higher than the #2 highest paid job: aerospace engineer.

Why More Ohioans Don’t Work in Utica Shale Industry? Drugs

Er, um, we’re not exactly sure how to broach this delicate topic without offending a great many residents of Ohio, including Ohio Gov. John Kasich who keeps saying he doesn’t want “foreign” workers in Ohio’s oil and gas fields (meaning he wants Ohioans only, not workers from Texas and Oklahoma), but, well, Gov. Kasich? Maybe you don’t have more Ohioans working in those gas fields because 50-60% of the Ohioans applying for those jobs are druggies. Yeah, you read that right. Half or more are strung out on drugs—both illegal and/or prescription.

In a recent interview, the head of the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program, Rhonda Reda, said that 50-60% of those applying for jobs in eastern Ohio’s shale industry are rejected because of the presence of illegal drugs or the “wrong” kind of prescription drugs (like Vicodin) found in the pee test. Note: we did not say half of all Ohioans use drugs! It’s half of all Ohioans applying for these jobs.

Jefferson County, OH Forces Shale Companies to Use Union Labor

From now on, Jefferson County, OH commissioners will force companies drilling Utica Shale wells in the county or companies building natural gas pipelines in the county that need to construct or repair public roadways, to use higher-priced laborers. Jefferson County commissioners are bowing to pressure from the Laborers International Union.

New road use agreements, which are required for constructing new wells and pipelines, must have a “prevailing wage requirement” according to the Jefferson County engineer, who says it’s a mandate from the state Attorney General’s office:

Status Report on Chesapeake’s Utica Shale Drilling Program

Chesapeake Energy is the second largest natural gas producer in the United States, behind ExxonMobil. If you’ve followed the shale gas drilling space for any length of time, you no doubt have heard about Chesapeake’s “problems” this past year. Their main problem is overextension: Leasing too much acreage without possessing enough money to drill on it. A further complication has been the low price of natural gas, meaning Chesapeake doesn’t make as much profit when they do drill. Too many bills to pay, not enough cash to pay them. The solution? Sell some of your assets.

United Airlines Beginning Flights from OK to OH

Don’t tell Ohio Gov. John Kasich, but more “foreigners” (i.e. out-of-state oil and gas workers) are coming to Ohio, and they’re doing it using (gasp) commercial airlines. Call the TSA! Beef up the border guards! If you’re not quite sure what MDN is referring to, see this MDN story for background.

A sure sign that Ohio’s Utica Shale is undergoing a rapid expansion is that United Airlines has just announced they will begin offering nonstop flights between Oklahoma City and Cleveland in February. The new flights begin on Valentine’s Day—giving Gov. Kasich a big metaphorical kiss on the smacker. Here’s the new news:

New Report: Fracking Creates Jobs in States with No Drilling

In October, global research company IHS released the first (of three) volumes in a new study titled America’s New Energy Future: The Unconventional Oil and Gas Revolution and the Economy (see this MDN story). Yesterday they released Volume 2 of the study which focuses on the economic contributions from the Lower 48 states—from both states where there is unconventional drilling, as well as from states without unconventional drilling. Yes, jobs and economic benefits are generated in non-drilling states thanks to the borders they share with those that do have drilling.

Volume 2 of the study finds that of the states with no unconventional drilling, New York leads the pack in the number of jobs created for its residents as a result of unconventional drilling (thank you Pennsylvania!). Of those states that do have unconventional drilling (i.e. they allow high volume fracking), Texas leads the way in job creation, followed by Pennsylvania. The study also finds that by 2025 Ohio (because of the Utica Shale) will become the third most job-creating state when it comes to the oil and gas industry.

Ohio Dems Accuse Gov. Kasich of Hypocrisy on “Foreign” Workers

Ohio Democrat politicians, like Ohio Gov. John Kasich (a Republican) want to limit the number of “foreigners” working in the oil and gas fields of the state. Foreigners means hard-working, experienced oilfield workers from Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma (traditional oil and gas states).

Mahoning Utica Pipeline/Processing Plant “Moving Forward”

Back in July, MDN told you about a new joint venture between Hilcorp and NiSource to build a wet gas pipeline and processing plant in the Youngstown, Ohio area (see this MDN story). There is still no official location (yet) for the new project, which will cost between $300 and $500 million to build, but we now have a name for it: the Hickory Bend Pipeline System.

According to a NiSource spokesperson, Hickory Bend (the pipeline and the processing plant) is “moving forward.” What does that mean? It means the Mahoning Valley will soon see a big boost in jobs for construction workers and welders:

PA Pump Manufacturer Invests $2.4M, Adds 50 New Jobs

K-Fab Inc., located in Berwick (Columbia County), PA is investing $2.4 million and adding 50 jobs to support a new product line for the Marcellus Shale drilling industry: pumps.

OH Gov. Kasich Continues Trash Talk Out-of-State Workers

WV Natural Gas Workers See Salaries Rise $2K/Year

Not only do the number of jobs grow when shale drilling comes to a region, but the salaries for those working in those jobs grows as well. Case in point comes from a new report released by WorkForce West Virginia. The average (average!) increase in salary for someone employed in the oil and natural gas industry in West Virginia went up by $8,100 from 2008 to 2011. When was the last you you even had a raise, let alone $2K per year? The average increase for pipeline workers was even more—$2,800 per year.
