Some SWPA Landowners See Royalty Checks Fall 75% in 1 Year

    August 10, 2020August 11, 2020

CBS News, an ultra-biased mainstream media news outlet that we don’t typically watch or read, is publishing a series of articles on the effects of COVID-19–how it has changed the lives of average Americans. In a somewhat unusual twist, CBS focused on landowners in southwestern Pennsylvania who leased property for shale drilling. How has COVID impacted them? CBS interviewed several landowners who have seen their royalties drop like a rock over the last year–down some 75% from just a year ago. While CBS doesn’t say COVID is responsible for all of that drop, they do theorize it has contributed. Has it? Or is something else responsible for the huge drop in royalties?

Summit Midstream – Ohio Utica Shines in 2Q

    August 10, 2020August 10, 2020

Summit Midstream Partners, formed in 2009 and headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, operates natural gas, crude oil and produced water gathering (pipeline) systems in six unconventional resource basins, including the Marcellus and Utica. The company concentrates its time and money on four “core focus areas” including the Utica, the Williston (i.e. Bakken), the DJ Basin and the Permian. The Marcellus is part of the company’s “legacy” systems that doesn’t get as much love (and money). Last week the company issued its 2Q update. The company’s Utica operation was the star performer in 2Q, increasing flows through Summit’s system by 60%.

DGO CEO Rusty Hutson Predicts M-U Production Plateau

    August 10, 2020August 10, 2020

Even though the price of natural gas selling at regional trading points like Dominion South has gone up, don’t expect more production in the Marcellus/Utica. Diversified Gas & Oil (DGO) CEO Rusty Hutson, in an interview with S&P Global Platts, said most of the larger drillers in the M-U will not increase production even with higher prices. The ones who will drill more are smaller companies leveraged to the hilt–they have to drill to keep the cash flow coming in.

SWPA Labor Unions Say Wolf’s $2.4B Carbon Tax Will Hurt PA Economy

    August 10, 2020August 10, 2020

Two different trade unions are asking some great questions about Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to force the state to join the so-called Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a carbon tax on coal and gas-fired electric generating plants. For example, how would a $2.36 BILLION carbon tax reduce carbon dixoide emissions any more than is already happening by the use of natural gas? PA already reduced CO2 emissions by 32% over the same time period RGGI (a coalition of liberal northeastern states) began–far more of a reduction than RGGI states have experienced!–without belonging to the RGGI tax plan.

Enverus Onshore Rig Count Stays Flat – MU Rigs Move Around

    August 10, 2020August 10, 2020

The onshore rig count continues to bump along near the bottom. A few weeks ago we noted that after hitting bottom, the Enverus rig count had once again started to climb (see Bottom! Enverus Onshore Rig Count Finally Moves Higher Last Week). Then the count went down a bit again (see Retrograde: Enverus Onshore Rig Count Slips Again, Down 7 Rigs). Last week’s numbers show the count staying about the same–maybe up or down one or two rigs, we’ll call it even. The Baker Hughes rig count, on the other hand, hit an all-time historic low. Not since BH began counting rigs in 1940 has the count been this low. Yuck.

EPA Rolling Back Obama Overregulation of O&G/Methane This Week

    August 10, 2020August 10, 2020

In May 2016 as they were heading out of power, the out-of-control Obama EPA issued new methane emissions rules as a back-door way to try and regulate the oil and gas industry (see EPA Does it Again: Tries to Destroy O&G with New Methane Rule). In pretty short order several states sued to stop the order, which eventually turned into 15 states (see 15 States File Lawsuits to Block EPA O&G Methane Rule). When President Trump assumed office, the Trump EPA set about working to undo some of the damage (see Trump Rolling Back Obama’s Wild Overregulation of Methane). After years in the making, the damage is finally about to be reversed. This week.

Gulfport Energy 2Q – $556M Paper Loss, Production Down 24%

    August 6, 2020August 6, 2020

Gulfport Energy, the third-largest (by number wells drilled) producer in the Ohio Utica Shale, issued its 2Q20 update yesterday. Back in June, the company said it would shut-in some of its production, delaying production until later this year (see Gulfport Caps Utica Production, Delays Drilling to Late 2020). The company made good on its promise. Gulfport’s 2Q production was 1,027 MMcfe/d (million cubic feet equivalent per day), down from 1,358 MMcfe/d in 2Q19. The company reports a loss of $556 million during 2Q, but most if not all of it comes from impairments and depreciation–in other words, a paper loss. The company generated $43.9 million in free cash flow in 2Q.

Energy Transfer Says Mariner East 2X Online by End of 2020

    August 6, 2020August 6, 2020

It’s been a loooong road getting the Mariner East 2 (ME2) pipeline system, which includes building two pipelines side-by-side from eastern Ohio across Pennsylvania to the Philadelphia area, done. From what we can tell, ME2 is now done–with the possible exception of a few miles where smaller pipeline is being used until a bigger replacement is done. For all intents, ME2 is done. However, ME2X, a second pipeline being built next to the first, is not yet done. But it’s getting close! According to comments from Energy Transfer (ET) made during a quarterly conference call yesterday, ME2X will be in service by the end of this year, and the entire project will be done-done sometime in 2Q21. Finally!

Range Resources Lays Off 40 Employees in Pittsburgh & Fort Worth

    August 6, 2020August 6, 2020

Most of the layoffs during this particularly brutal (and historic) downturn in the oil and gas market have taken place in oilfield services companies like Halliburton, Baker Hughes and Sclumberger. But exploration & production companies are not immune. Chevron is laying off workers in their Marcellus/Utica operation because the company is selling all of its Appalachian assets and leaving the region (see Chevron Cutting 320 Jobs in Marcellus/Utica Beginning April 6th and Chevron Cuts Another 80 Jobs in M-U; Still Looking for Buyer). Another M-U driller is also laying off personnel–Range Resources.

Last Thursday a group of Pennsylvania State Senators toured Deep Well Services (DWS) in Butler County, PA. DWS is one of our favorite oilfield services companies. DWS is a Marcellus/Utica-born oilfield services company that specializes in “snubbing” work (completing those super-long laterals you read about). DWS has long been known for its technological innovations. The Senators got a behind-the-scenes look at DWS’ technology.

Sierra Club Loses Court Case to Block Drill Cuttings in NY Landfill

    August 6, 2020August 6, 2020

In February MDN told you about an effort by the radicalized Sierra Club to block a New York landfill from accepting drill cuttings from the Pennsylvania Marcellus (see Antis Fabricate Data in Attempt to Block NY Landfill Expansion). The Clubbers fabricated (made up, lied about) data, trying to use this new made-up data in a court case aimed at stopping the C&D Hakes Landfill in Painted Post, NY (near Elmira, located in Steuben County) from accepting PA drill cuttings. The judge has just ruled in the case–against the Clubbers.
