HUGE Utica News: EOG Resources Buys Encino Energy for $5.6 Billion

    June 2, 2025June 2, 2025

In February, MDN brought you the rumor that Canadian pension fund CPP Investments, the majority owner of Encino Acquisition Partners (aka Encino Energy), was considering either a sale of the company or possibly an initial public offering (see Shocker: Encino Energy Considers Sale or Possible IPO for $7B). The rumor was right. On Friday, EOG Resources, Inc. announced an agreement with Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP) and Encino Energy under which EOG will acquire Encino Acquisition Partners (EAP) for $5.6 billion, inclusive of EAP’s net debt. EOG expects to fund the acquisition through $3.5 billion of debt and $2.1 billion of cash on hand. Read More “HUGE Utica News: EOG Resources Buys Encino Energy for $5.6 Billion”

    Nat’l Rig Count Down 3 @ 563; Marc. Even @ 24, Utica Drops 1 @ 12

    June 2, 2025June 2, 2025

Last week, for the fifth week in a row, the Baker Hughes U.S. rig count dropped, down another three rigs to its lowest level since November 2021. There were changes among the Marcellus/Utica states, too. The combined M-U count dropped by one to 36 active rigs. The Pennsylvania Marcellus gained one rig, now at 18 rigs. The Ohio Utica dropped one of the two rigs it picked up two weeks ago and now stands at 11 rigs. West Virginia also dropped a rig and now runs only seven rigs. Trump DOE Order Blocks Gas-Fired Peaker Near Philly from Closing

    June 2, 2025June 2, 2025

One day before Constellation Energy’s Eddystone Generating Station in Delaware County, PA, was due to close its remaining two units, the Trump Department of Energy stepped in and ordered the plants to remain active based on Trump’s declaration of an energy emergency in the country. The plant is located just south of Philadelphia. It began operations in 1960. Eddystone can burn either natural gas or (in a pinch) oil. A week before, the Trumpsters ordered a coal-fired plant in Michigan to remain online. SRBC Approved 45 Shale Gas Well Pad Water Use Permits in April

    June 2, 2025June 23, 2025

The highly functional and responsible Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC), unlike its less functional and irresponsible counterpart, the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), continues to support the shale energy industry by approving water withdrawals and consumptive use for responsible and safe shale drilling. The SRBC published a notice in the May 31 Pennsylvania Bulletin that the Executive Director of the SRBC renewed 45 general water use permits in April for individual shale gas well drilling pads in Blair, Bradford, Lycoming, Potter, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Tioga counties in Pennsylvania. The director also approved new water withdrawals for the 146-megawatt gas-fired Hunlock Creek power plant in Luzerne County. Ohio Eyes Using Heat and CO2 from Data Centers to Grow Fresh Food

This is ingenious and yet another example of how free market capitalism is superior to every other economic system on earth. You likely know that artificial intelligence (AI) and the data centers that are needed to offer AI to the masses have some downsides. Namely, data centers (and the gas-fired power plants that power them) produce a lot of heat, and the power plants produce a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2). Instead of viewing those as negatives, what if we viewed them as positives—as opportunities? That’s how Shawn Cutter, a sixth-generation Ohio farmer and an entrepreneur in the energy and tech sectors, sees it. He’s pitching the concept of co-locating greenhouses with data centers and gas-fired power plants to capture and use the heat and CO2 (which plants need) to grow fresh produce in the winter in Ohio. Brilliant! Read More “Ohio Eyes Using Heat and CO2 from Data Centers to Grow Fresh Food”

Port Arthur LNG Receives Non-FTA Export Authorization from DOE

Port Arthur, TX (click for larger version)

Last week, Sempra announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a permit to the company’s Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 development project to allow the export of up to 13.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of U.S.-produced liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries that do not have a free-trade agreement (FTA) with the U.S. The non-FTA permit, which is the first issued since the completion of the DOE’s most recent public interest study, is a major regulatory milestone for the proposed Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project.
