Repsol Gives Up on Plan to Export LNG from St. John, Canada

Last September, Spanish oil and gas drilling giant Repsol, which owns the St. John, New Brunswick (Canada) LNG facility, filed an application with the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) to export up to 300 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas from the St. John facility (see Repsol Files Application to Export 300 MMcf/d of LNG from Canada). The St. John facility currently imports LNG. Repsol had plans to build an export (liquefaction) facility at the same location. Those hopes are now shattered. Repsol announced it is giving up because it can’t build pipelines–either from Western Canada or the Marcellus/Utica region–to reach the facility. There is just too much red tape and resistance from anti-fossil fuel wackos.

CERAWeek: Repsol Investing $1.5B; Souki Won’t Sell LNG to China

As we have been reporting, CERAWeek, the world’s premier energy conference, is happening all this week in Houston, Texas. MDN is not there, but there are a number of news organizations on site. One of them is Bloomberg. Yes, we know, Bloomberg tilts left. But sometimes they send reporters out who actually do real reporting, as is happening from CERAWeek. On Monday, Bloomberg filed a roundup/overview of things said at the event–both in sessions and in interviews with Bloomberg reporters. Below is the roundup from Day One of CERAWeek, which includes an interesting summary of Repsol comments that the company is investing close to $1.5 billion in 2023 in exploration and production in North America. Repsol has major operations in the Marcellus–so we can expect an expanded drilling program in Repsol’s northeastern PA assets.

Investor EIG Buys 25% of Repsol Upstream Ops, Including Marcellus

Spanish-owed Repsol owns 214,000 net acres of leases in the Marcellus Shale, primarily located in northeastern Pennsylvania in Bradford, Susquehanna, and Tioga counties. Early last year (in January 2022), Repsol closed on a deal to buy Rockdale Marcellus out of bankruptcy for $222 million, adding Rockdale’s acreage and wells to Resol’s portfolio (see Sale of Rockdale PA Assets to Repsol Closes – $220M Cash, $2M Debt). However, Repsol is a big company with operations far beyond the Marcellus. Repsol operates around the world in 25 countries, covering upstream, midstream, and downstream. Repsol’s upstream operations are both onshore and offshore in 15 countries! Here’s some new news, at least for us…

SRBC Approves 233M Gal/Day of Water Use for 38 PA Shale Pads

The difference between the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) and the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) is stark. The former is well-run and rational, the latter is disorganized and irrational. At least with respect to fracking. Over the weekend, the SRBC published a notice in the Pennsylvania Bulletin to announce that during the month of January, the agency approved 38 requests for daily water use on shale well pads in the SRBC’s jurisdictional territory in Pennsylvania, totaling some 233.5 million gallons. Put another way, this is a handy list of where drilling will soon happen in northeastern PA.

26 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Jan 30-Feb 5

New shale permits issued for Jan. 30 through Feb. 5 in the Marcellus/Utica were about half the number of the week before, but the week before was a recent record high. There were 26 new permits issued in total last week, including five new permits for Pennsylvania, six new permits for Ohio, and 15 permits issued in West Virginia. Which is a turnaround from previous months. Lately, WV has puttered along with just a few (if any) each week. Last week WV issued eight new permits to Antero Resources and seven new permits to Tug Hill Operating.

59 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Jan 23-29

New shale permits issued for Jan. 23-29 in the Marcellus/Utica soared! There were 59 new permits issued in total, including 34 (!) new permits for Pennsylvania, 24 (!) new permits for Ohio, and just one measly permit issued in West Virginia. Chesapeake Energy was the runaway winner by grabbing 13 permits, all of them for wells in Bradford County, PA. EOG Resources was the runner-up, receiving eight permits for drilling in Noble County, OH.

SRBC Approves 2M Gallons/Day of Water Withdrawals for PA Fracking

Unlike the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), which gets the creepy crawlies at the mere mention of the word “fracking,” the Susquehanna River Basin Commission (SRBC) has been dealing with fracking and water requests for use in fracking for more than a decade. Somehow the SRBC, a quasi-governmental agency (as is the DRBC), manages to allow fracking, and there are NO negative impacts on local water and NO negative impact on the Susquehanna River and its tributaries. Must be the people who run the SRBC are just more talented than those who run the DRBC.

26 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Nov 14-20

Last week (Nov. 14-20) saw a total of 31 new shale permits issued across the Marcellus/Utica, up slightly from 26 permits the week before. Pennsylvania received the most permits, with 26 new permits issued. Ohio received five new permits, and West Virginia got skunked with no new permits last week.

Repsol Picks Up Abarta’s Non-Op Working Interest in PA Marcellus

Abarta Energy (aka Abarta Oil & Gas Co.) was a privately-owned company based in Pittsburgh with assets including wells and pipeline systems located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. In November 2021, Abarta filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, reporting liabilities of $25.4 million and assets of $4.2 million (see M-U Driller Abarta Energy Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy). Abarta said it wanted to liquidate/sell all of its remaining oil and gas assets. Some of those assets included a non-operated working interest with Repsol in the northeastern Pennsylvania Marcellus. It appears Repsol bought out Abarta’s interest in the joint venture the two companies had. The transaction happened before June 30, 2022.

28 New Shale Well Permits Issued for PA-OH-WV Oct 24-30

Something of an improvement from last week’s new permits report when there were only 11 new permits. For the week of October 24-30, there were 28 new permits. But not because of the return of new permits in Pennsylvania. Instead, Ohio was the shining light. PA reported 11 new permits, all of them in Lycoming County, with seven going to Repsol and four going to Inflection Energy. Ohio issued 16 new permits, with Encino Energy grabbing six, Southwestern Energy getting five, and Ascent Energy receiving four. Finally, WV had a single new permit, for Tug Hill Operating (soon to be EQT), in Wetzel County.

Repsol Begins Shipping MiQ Certified Natural Gas from PA Marcellus

Spanish-owed Repsol owns 214,000 net acres of leases in the Marcellus Shale, primarily located in northeastern Pennsylvania in Bradford, Susquehanna, and Tioga counties. Earlier this year, Repsol said it was working with certification authority MiQ to have all of its Marcellus production certified as “responsibly produced” (see Repsol Pursues MiQ Responsible Gas Cert for Marcellus Production). Good news! MiQ has granted full certification, and as of Nov. 1, Repsol is providing “responsible” Marcellus gas to the marketplace.

Repsol Files Application to Export 300 MMcf/d of LNG from Canada

In June, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about Germany buying LNG from Canada (see One of Five Canadian East Coast LNG Export Projects Leads the Pack). One of the five East Coast projects, in particular, seemed to be the focus of their discussion–Repsol’s St. John LNG project in St. John, New Brunswick. However, two months later when Scholz was visiting Canada, both Scholz and Trudeau dismissed the concept of Canada exporting LNG to Germany (see Canadian PM & German Chancellor Trash Talk LNG Exports to Europe). Both “leaders” pledged their undying love to renewable unicorn farts instead. Their stupidity is mind-blowing. We’re happy to report Repsol has ignored both Trudeau and Scholz and their inane comments and has just filed an application with the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) to export up to 300 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas from the St. John facility.
