OH Muskingum Watershed District Seeks Lease with Antero

In what is sure to tick off anti-drillers, the Ohio-based Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) announced Friday it will seek a lease with Antero Resources to allow shale gas drilling under 7,600 acres of district-owned land at Seneca Lake. The Muskingum River Watershed covers more than 8,000 square miles and drains into the Muskingum River. It is the largest wholly contained watershed in the state of Ohio covering about 20 percent of the state. More recently, the MWCD has been in hot water with anti-drillers over selling what amounts to a thimble-full of their vast water supplies to drillers in Ohio that use it for fracking Utica Shale wells (see this MDN story).

So, just how much will the MWCD get for leasing the Seneca Lake land?

How Does Conventional/Unconventional Drilling Differ in PA?

Before the Marcellus Shale was actively drilled in Pennsylvania, starting with Range Resources in 2004, there was natural gas drilling in the state for many years. In fact, although about 5,000 Marcellus Shale or “deep” natural gas wells have been drilled in the past eight years, there are about 50,000 conventional or “shallow” natural gas wells scattered throughout the state, drilled over the past 50+ years. Ever wonder how conventional and unconventional wells stack up?

NY Fracking Rules Won’t be Released in 2012

Is there any chance that New York will move forward with releasing new shale gas drilling rules by Nov. 29, the one year anniversary after the last public hearing on the new rules (and by which the rules must be released or the rulemaking process restarts)? No. Not a chance.

Why? NY State Health Commissioner Nirav Shah has only just yesterday named three outside “experts” to help conduct a “health review” of New York’s proposed drilling regulations. The deadline given the experts to complete their review? “Mid-February.”

Industry “Prepares for Worst” with Expected EPA Regs

Some energy producers at the Developing Unconventional Gas (DUG) East Conference in Pittsburgh went on record expressing their concerns that a rogue (MDN’s words) Obama EPA will soon make a power grab to control shale drilling through the back door of controlling hydraulic fracturing. In their words, they are “preparing for the worst,” although what those preparations include was unstated.

Anti-Drilling Group Releases Fracking Chemical Database

A new database of the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has just been released by anti-drilling organization SkyTruth.org. The database uses publicly available information posted on FracFocus.org. According to SkyTruth, they make the FracFocus chemical data more accessible and easy to use.

Obama’s War on Fossil Fuels (and Jobs)

Warning: If you voted for Obama and don’t like reading critiques of our Dear Leader, move along and don’t bother reading this post. You’ve been warned.

The former chief Republican counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and author William C. Triplett II has an article in yesterday’s Washington Times that is a must read. Triplett makes a visit to various shale plays around the country, including the Marcellus in West Virginia, and comes to the conclusion that the miracle of hydraulic fracturing is now the fourth economic revolution since the end of World War II (the others being the jet engine, integrated circuits/modern electronics and the Internet, all invented by Americans). Triplett expected to see an exciting new industry—what he didn’t expect, and found, were the stories of how the shale revolution has profoundly and positively affected individuals.

Deloitte Survey: NatGas Price >$3 in 2013, Oil Price <$100

Consulting firm Deloitte recently completed a survey of 250 oil and gas professionals on their expert opinions about where they believe the energy industry is headed in the near and long-term. Among their findings: The U.S. will soon become completely energy self-sufficient for natural gas, but we’ll always need to import at least some oil.

Looking at 2013, a majority of those surveyed (60%) believe the commodity price of natural gas will average more than $3 per million Btus for the year, and a majority (59%) think crude oil will stay below $100 per barrel next year. Attitudes about regulation of fracking is also interesting: 49% think existing regulations of fracking is “just right” or “on track.”

Leading Anti-Driller Does 180, Signs Lease with Cabot in PA

Denise Dennis, a very vocal critic of gas drilling and someone who caught national attention two years ago by denouncing natural gas drilling and comparing it to the tobacco industry at a Philadelphia City Council meeting, has just signed a lease with Cabot Oil & Gas to allow drilling under her historic property in Susquehanna County, PA.

Newspaper Says Recent Election is Proof NYers Want Fracking

IEA Issues World Energy Outlook 2012 – Shale Energy the Star

The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) for 2012 yesterday. One of the starring roles in the report goes to unconventional shale gas and oil being produced by the U.S. Among the statements in the report: “The WEO finds that the extraordinary growth in oil and natural gas output in the United States will mean a sea-change in global energy flows.” The report predicts the U.S. will be a natural gas net exporter in eight short years—in 2020.

Drilling Mud Manufacturer Opens Plant in Wellsville, OH

Drilling mud manufacturer Anchor Drilling Fluids USA has just opened a new facility in Wellsville, Ohio—the first such facility in Ohio’s Utica Shale region. Anchor sited the plant next to a barite processing plant which they’ve invested in. Barite is one of the compounds used to make drilling mud.

Yet Another Faux Report on Radiation Danger from NY Fracking

Duquesne U Anti-Drilling “Study” Based on 14 Interviews

Duquesne University (Pittsburgh) is hosting a conference on the effects of shale gas drilling in a “Boom and Bust” conference being held today and tomorrow at the university. Although the conference flies under the banner of “science” and will share the results of a “scientific study,” it is any but. It’s about the findings of a so-called study that interviewed 14 hand-picked anti-drilling women about their feelings and attitudes toward drilling. They were interviewed twice each.

So much for scientific inquiry at Duquesne.

Preliminary EPA Report on Fracking Coming Soon

MDN has shared its view—for years—that the federal Environmental Protection Agency under Obama has become a rogue agency, attempting to usurp the U.S. Constitution by taking over regulation of that which belongs to the states. Namely, oil and gas drilling. How? By using the federal Clean Water Act and federal Clean Air Act to control drilling (among a plethora of other federal laws). The EPA’s favored target is and has been hydraulic fracturing.

The EPA is currently conducting a multi-year study on fracking. An interim report will be released in the next month or so, and if a high-ranking EPA official’s comments about it are any indication, the energy industry has reason to be concerned:
