MarkWest Extends Open Season for “Little” Ethane Pipeline

MarkWest conducted an open season for their “little” 30-mile ethane pipeline that will run from Majorsville, PA to Houston, PA (in Washington County) from early November until December 9th. The MarkWest Liberty Ethane Pipeline is a pipeline to other pipelines (see MarkWest Open Season for “Little” Ethane Pipeline). Ethane arriving in Houston, PA will be able to hitch a ride out of the northeast via other pipelines to cracker plants and processing facilities in Canada and the Gulf Coast.

Apparently the open season didn’t garner as much business as MarkWest had hoped, because yesterday they announced “ya got a few more days to sign up.” The new deadline for the open season is this Friday, December 13th at 5:00 pm Eastern. CONSOL Buys 90K WV Marcellus/Upper Devonian Acres, Well Report

CONSOL Energy issued a press release today updating their Marcellus Shale well results from wells drilled in Washington County, PA. In addition to PA, CONSOL owns leases for and is actively drilling in the West Virginia Marcellus area–most of it in the “wet gas” (natural gas liquids) area of the Marcellus. The update says they just completed their first pad in Barbour County, WV, a pad with six wells on it.

The big news in today’s announcement: CONSOL has just purchased another 90,000 acres of leases in WV–from Dominion Resources–for $190 million ($2,111 per acre). The deal will allow CONSOL to not only drill in the Marcellus layer, but also the Upper Devonian shale layer as well. CONSOL is one of the few drillers (so far) targeting the Upper Denonian (see MDN’s Upper Devonian category for stories about who else is targeting that layer)…

Washington County Seeks Proposals to Drill Under Mingo Creek Park

A few weeks ago the Allegheny County legislature voted down a proposed ban on drilling under county parks 9-2 (see Allegheny County (PA) Council Votes Down Drill Ban for Parks). In the end, even though the Allegheny County legislature is heavily Democrat, they abandoned their fellow Democrats. The money from leasing is so good, and the risk is so low, even the left-leaning Allegheny County legislature can’t ignore it.

It seems that neighboring Washington County, PA also thinks drilling under county parks is a good idea. Washington County commissioners are looking for proposals to drill under Mingo Creek Park. The same driller that’s interested in drilling under Deer Lakes Park in Allegheny County is also interested in drilling under Mingo Creek Park in Washington County: Range Resources…

EQT Hires Valerus for 2 New Compressor Stations in SW PA

Valerus, a Houston, TX-based company with a growing facility in Smithfield, PA manufactures/creates compression solutions–assembling the pipelines, valves, engines, etc.–that move natural gas through a pipeline. Think of them as the people that come in and install the guts of a compressor station.

EQT Corp., a major Marcellus Shale driller, has just hired Valerus to do just that–install new compression solutions at two compressor stations in southwest PA. It means more jobs and more investment on the way in PA…

MarkWest Open Season for “Little” Ethane Pipeline

MarkWest Energy yesterday announced an open season for a “little” ethane pipeline in Pennsylvania. The little pipeline, which we now have a name for–MarkWest Liberty Ethane Pipeline–will run from Majorsville, PA to Houston, PA, about 30 miles. It is a pipeline to other pipelines. The MarkWest plant in Houston will provide access for the incoming ethane to be pipelined out of the area via the Mariner West pipeline (to Sarnia, Canada, going operational later this month), the Mariner East pipeline to the Marcus Hook refinery near Philadelphia (not ready until 2015), and the ATEX ethane pipeline to the Gulf Coast (ready sometime in 1Q14).

PA Judge Forces Range, Contractors to Provide Chemical List

Three families who live near a drill site/frack wastewater impoundment (“pond”) in Cecil Township, PA have a long-running (since May 2012) lawsuit against Range Resources claiming Range’s drilling and wastewater impoundment has contaminated their well water. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) investigated and found no contamination. Even the federal EPA looked at it last year and never filed any violation notices–meaning they didn’t find anything either (see EPA Investigating Range Drill Site in Western PA).

However, the families maintain they have been harmed by toxic chemicals used during drilling, and so a judge has ordered Range and all of their subcontractors to provide a list of every conceivable chemical compound used at the site since 2009–right down to the kind of oil used in the engines of vehicles visiting the site–and she’s giving them 30 days to do it…

Range Resources’ Top 10 Wet Gas Wells, New Company Presentation

Yesterday Range Resources released their financial and operations update for third quarter 2013 (see our companion story from today). Nestled in that update is reference to a new company presentation released yesterday as well, available on the Range website. MDN downloaded it (full copy embedded below) and wow! What a presentation it is. This sucker is loaded with useful charts, maps, bullet points and more. Range has done the industry (and their investors) a great service with this presentation.

Below we will highlight some of our favorite “don’t miss it” slides from the presentation, so you know which ones to zero in on right away. However, the one slide many will want to view first is the list of Range’s Top 10 Liquids Rich (“wet gas”) wells. That slide lists the wells and their locations (hint: they’re all found in a single PA county), initial production levels, production mix (how much oil, NGLs, gas), lateral length, and number of frac stages. 2nd Landman Pleads Guilty to Single Count in $2.4M Fraud Scheme

A month ago MDN told you that one of two landmen accused of stealing mineral rights from unsuspecting landowners by forging signatures and using fake companies had plead guilty (see PA Landman Pleads Guilty to Defrauding Landowners, Off to Jail). His name is William Ray and he’ll not only do three years in the big house, he’ll also pay back over a half million dollars of what he stole.

At the time, Ray’s partner in crime (and the mastermind behind the scheme), Derek Candelore, plead not guilty. Yesterday Candelore plead guilty to one charge of mail fraud…

TerrAqua Gets Conditional Approval for PA Frack Wastewater Plant

MDN has been watching the progress of a proposed new frack wastewater processing facility proposed by TerrAqua for Smith Township (Washington County), PA. A month ago the town held a somewhat bumpy public hearing about the proposed facility (see TerrAqua a Half Step Closer to New Frack Wastewater Facility).

Last night Smith Township supervisors voted to grant a zoning variance to TerrAqua for the plant–contingent on the plant gaining approval from the state Dept. of Environmental Protection and provided TerrAqua agrees to the same terms MAX Environmental follows in that vicinity–terms that limit the number of trucks coming and going and the hours of operation. TerrAqua says they need to study the variance before commenting…

PA Anti-Fracking Gatecrashers Outside, Real Work Gets Done Inside

We know everyone likes a good story, so… Once upon a time there were four anti-drillers: Craig Stevens (from Dimock, PA, he of the little brown jug that supposedly contains contaminated drinking water from his well but he won’t let anyone test it); Ray Kemble (also from Dimock, PA); Robert Lee McCaslin (from Bath, NY); and Randy Moyer (from Portage, PA). None of these anti-drillers apparently have day jobs because they travel around the northeast like groupies following their favorite rock band–except in reverse. This band of merry anti-frackers travel about the countryside trying to gatecrash pro-drilling meetings. (Every now and again they do attend a meeting of the anti-drilling faithful–just to get some good juju to keep going.)

Anywho…our merry band of four anti-frackers descended on a peaceful meeting of elected PA officials in far western PA yesterday, and the Washington Observer-Reporter was there to report on the four anti-frackers outside instead of the 100 elected officials inside…

Pittsburgh Summit: Marcellus the WD-40 of SW PA Rustbelt Economy

Yesterday a group of manufacturing and labor leaders gathered at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers headquarters on Pittsburgh’s South Side to talk about the creation of more manufacturing jobs in the greater Pittsburgh area–specifically about how Marcellus Shale is changing the landscape and is a tremendous jobs creator in the region. Several publications attended and each put their own angle on what was said at the meeting.

MDN picks through the stories to bring you the bits and pieces we found interesting–news about how the Marcellus is changing the picture in southwest PA and beyond. One of those interesting tidbits: the chairman of the PA Public Utility Commission said Marcellus Shale gas has been responsible for power prices dropping an average 52% across the state–for everyone. Strange Twist: Rep. Jesse White Calls His Own Words “Hate Speech”

For some time MDN has chronicled the sad story of western PA Rep. Jesse White, an anti-driller with a grudge against Range Resources who turned to using fake online IDs in order to trash talk his own constituents (see How the Mighty Have Fallen: PA Rep White Admits Guilt, Not Sorry). White eventually (months later) saw the error of his ways when he was outed at Harvard summer school and his “peers” told him “Jesse, you done wrong” (see PA Rep. White Says Fake IDs were “Error in Judgment”).

So get this. Some of White’s constituents, rightly outraged that he is still in office, put his own fake ID words on a big poster board and showed it at an information table set up at the local Fall Festival at an area park. Local Democrat officials were miffed that someone had the audacity to tell the truth about one of their own–in public! Some of the local Dems resigned from their respective boards in protest over the booth. Jesse called his own words on that poster “hate speech.” Huh? That’s right–the fact that someone took his exact words and showed them to local residents (because the media continues to fail to do its job), and White said it’s hate speech. Yeah Jesse, we’re glad you agree that what you previously said is indeed “hate speech”…

Mt Pleasant Tells Range Resources “No Deal” on Water Impoundments

An update of the ongoing kerfuffle between Range Resources and their four water impoundments (i.e. ponds) and Mt. Pleasant Township officials in Washington County, PA (for background, see Range Water Impoundment Public Hearing Postponed 2nd Time). Mt. Pleasant recently served Range with zoning violation notices for the four impoundments–they want them all closed. Range recently proposed a compromise that would allow them to keep three of the four impoundments open.

Hearing on Proposed TerrAqua Wastewater Recycling Facility in PA

A potential new frack wastewater recycling/treatment plant is on the way in Washington County, PA. If it can get zoning approval from Smith Township. TerrAqua Resource Management has applied for a zoning variance that would it allow it to build a Marcellus Shale wastewater fluid recycling facility near the village of Bulger. The original application was turned down by Smith, but TerrAqua refiled for the variance.

No one (from TerrAqua nor the town) is talking about this new request ahead of a public hearing tonight…
