Gastar’s 2012 Update: 38 WV Marcellus Wells Now in Production

Today Gastar released 2012 numbers and an operational update for their drilling activities in the Marcellus Shale. Among the highlights: Gastar’s proved reserves increased 51% in 2012. By the end of last year, Gastar was operating 38 Marcellus Shale wells—all of them in the wet gas region of Marshall County, WV.

Chesapeake’s Property Tax Assessment Lowered in Marshall County

West Virginia has a phenomenally complicated taxation structure when it comes to, well, everything—but especially for oil and gas wells. The severance tax is 5%—that’s pretty easy. But WV also has an ad valorem (property) tax for both drillers and mineral rights owners. The way WV calculates the value of income-producing properties takes a tax attorney to figure out. In Marshall County, tax attorney John Mairs represents both Chesapeake Energy and Chevron. Chesapeake has 29 wells in the county and Chevron has 19.

Mairs was successful in getting Chesapeake’s property assessments on their 29 wells reduced by nearly $60 million, but Chevron’s assessment was reduced by only $20 million and that was due to a clerical error at the state level. Bomb Threat at Natrium, WV NGL Plant Doesn’t Slow Construction

A $500 million natural gas liquids processing plant in Natrium (Marshall County), WV will go online in the next few weeks—even with a temporary stoppage of construction last Saturday due to a bomb threat (no word on who made the threat or why). The Natrium plant is part of Blue Racer Midstream, a $1.5 billion joint venture between Dominion and Caiman Energy (see Dominion, Caiman in $1.5B Utica JV: Blue Racer Midstream). The new plant was originally scheduled to go online by end of 2012.

Coming to WV: The Little Ethane Cracker that Could

“Small” Ethane Cracker Plant Coming to Wheeling, WV

A new polyethelene (PE) manufacturing plant complete with a “small” ethane cracker is coming to West Virginia, somewhere “south of Wheeling.” Appalachian Resins Inc. is the company that will build the new plant with a capacity to produce 500 million pounds of PE per year. They aim to take advantage of Marcellus and Utica Shale gas and its byproduct ethane which is so abundant throughout the region.

Marshall County, WV Property Values Double in 6 Years

In the past two years, the assessed value of property in Marshall County, WV has increased by 50%. Since 2007, assessed values in the county have gone up 200%! The reason is, of course, almost entirely due to Marcellus Shale drilling and related infrastructure.

Insider Look at Gastar’s WV Marcellus Operations, Changes in 2013

WV Landowner Sues 3 Companies for Methane Contamination of Water

A landowner in Marshall County, West Virginia had previously sued Chesapeake Energy, claiming Chesapeake’s nearby drilling and fracking operations (from 2009/2010) caused methane to migrate and contaminate his water well. Chesapeake sampled the well and found the kind of methane in the well (the “fingerprint” for the methane) does not match the methane from their drilled natural gas well.

The story then gets complicated. It seems that CNX Gas, a division of CONSOL Energy, had previously drilled a number of shallow natural gas wells in the area, and that Columbia Gas, a division of NiSource, has an underground natural gas storage field adjacent to the landowner’s property. Oy vey. There’s no shortage of possibilities for how the methane may have gotten into his well, and so now everyone is now getting sued…

Dominion, Caiman in $1.5B Utica JV: Blue Racer Midstream

Two large midstream (pipeline & processing plant) companies, Dominion and Caiman Energy II, announced a new $1.5 billion, 50/50 joint venture to form a new midstream services company to service the Utica Shale in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The name of the new company is Blue Racer Midstream. Sound familiar? It should. Yesterday MDN brought you the news that Williams is investing $380 million in Caiman Energy/Blue Racer (see this MDN story).Williams owns nearly half of Caiman Energy II (47.5%).

One of the core assets of the new Blue Racer Midstream company will be Dominion’s previously announced $500 million natural gas liquids processing plant in Natrium, WV (see this MDN story). The Natrium plant was scheduled to go online by Dec. 31—a deadline that won’t be met. However, work on the new NGL plant continues at a “furious pace” and the plant will be online in early 2013. Dominion’s extensive gathering pipeline system in eastern Ohio is also part of the deal.

Gastar Issues Report on Marcellus Drilling Results/Strategy

Gastar Exploration Ltd. provided an update this morning on the results of its 2012 drilling operating operations in the Marcellus Shale. Gasstar says they currently operate 34 gross Marcellus Shale wells (in Marshall County, WV) and will up that number to 38 wells by the end of the year. Dominion $500M NGL Processing Plant in WV to Open in December

Some 903 workers are hard at work in Natrium, WV building Dominion Resources’ new processing plant. Dominion announced they would build a $500 million natural gas liquids processing plant in August 2011 (see this MDN story). Dominion says they are on track to open the facility in December of this year.

Once the plant is done it will process an incoming 200 million cubic feet per day of Marcellus and Utica Shale “wet gas” and separate it into ethane, pentane, butane, propane and other compounds for resale. But the plant is not without controversy. The local trade union is not happy that the contractor building the new plant is only using one-third local workers for the project:

Gale Force Petroleum Marcellus Update for 2 WV Counties

Gale Force Petroleum issued an operations update today about their Marcellus drilling activities in Wetzel and Marshall counties in West Virginia. Gale Force says the wells they’ve drilled, in wet gas areas, are producing in excess of 60 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOEPD) of natural gas liquids in the Marcellus. They expect that number to grow.

Gale Force also says they’ve drilled 15 wells to date and have plans to drill another 50-100 wells on the 10,000 acres they’ve leased over the next three years. From the Gale Force press release:

Royalty Checks Coming for Landowners in WV Panhandle

Williams to Invest Additional $1.34B, Create 100 Jobs in WV

At a ceremony yesterday in Marshall County, WV, Williams Partners announced they will spend an additional $1.34 billion between now and 2014 and add an additional 100 long-term jobs to expand processing capacity of a recently acquired natural gas liquids plant. Added with their previous investments, Williams will have spent $3.84 billion on infrastructure projects in the northern panhandle of West Virginia.
