ET Reports Massive New Gas Demand from Power Plants, Data Centers

    November 8, 2024November 8, 2024

Two days ago, Energy Transfer (ET), a major midstream (pipeline) company with assets in the Marcellus/Utica, issued its third quarter update. ET has assets in many areas of the country, so there was plenty of discussion about pipelines in other areas. However, the centerpiece of the update and the conference call with analysts was the incredible (and we mean incredible) demand ET is seeing from both gas-fired power plants (new and existing) and data center projects. In his opening remarks, Tom Long, co-CEO of ET, said the company has received requests to connect to approximately 45 power plants the company does not currently serve in 11 states. The demand from those 45 plants would be 6 Bcf per day. In addition, ET has requests from over 40 prospective data centers in 10 states that would use another 10 Bcf/d. A combined 16 Bcf/d of new demand for one company. Incredible! Read More “ET Reports Massive New Gas Demand from Power Plants, Data Centers”

Biden DOE Rushing to Release “Study” Attacking LNG Exports

    November 8, 2024November 8, 2024

In January, Joe Biden announced he would “pause” any approvals for new LNG export plants, with over a dozen requests in the pipeline, for at least one year while his people fart around pretending to figure out how to measure global warming as a new consideration for whether or not to approve projects (see White House Makes it Official – Biden Declares War on LNG Exports). Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm (can’t wait to see her gone!) said the “pause” would be over and done no later than January 2025. Bloomberg is reporting that the DOE, following the election of Donald Trump, is now rushing to complete and adopt its sure-to-be-negative report, which could complicate Trump’s plan to expand LNG exports rapidly. History Lesson: Discovery of Marcellus Gas Tied to Yom Kippur War

    November 8, 2024November 8, 2024

How, exactly, did the Marcellus Shale come to be? What spurred early interest to spend millions of dollars to sink a well in the Marcellus with the hope (gamble) that natural gas would flow from it? We all know that Range Resources sunk that first well in 2004, but there was a LOT that happened before to tee up the Marcellus as a potential target. The Marcellus Shale layer has been known about since the late 1800s. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s and the Yom Kippur War that serious interest in the Marcellus as a source of natural gas began in earnest. Deep Well Services Sold to United Arab Emirates for $223 Million

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

The privately-held Deep Well Services (DWS), headquartered in Butler County, PA, is one of our favorite oilfield services companies. DWS was born right here in the Marcellus/Utica in 2008. DWS specializes in “snubbing” work—completing those super-long laterals you read about. Although the company rarely brags publicly about the work it does on behalf of drillers, we happen to know that it has drilled the longest onshore wells in the world Lower 48 states. Great company, great people. However, the news broke yesterday that the company is being sold—to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country that is a longstanding member of OPEC+.

Gulfport Spent $52M on Leases, Still Loves the Ohio Marcellus

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

Gulfport Energy, the third-largest driller in the Ohio Utica Shale (by the number of wells drilled), reported its third quarter 2024 numbers yesterday. The company drills Utica and Marcellus wells in Ohio. It also has an active drilling program in the Oklahoma SCOOP shale play. Gulfport’s net daily production for 3Q24 averaged 1,057.2 MMcfe/d (1.06 Bcfe/d), up slightly from 3Q23’s average of 1,056.9 MMcfe/d. Production in 3Q consisted of 861.6 MMcfe/d in the Utica/Marcellus (81%) and 195.6 MMcfe/d in the SCOOP (19%). The production mix comprised approximately 91% natural gas, 6% natural gas liquids (NGLs), and 3% oil and condensate. The company has spent $52 million on maintenance leasehold and land investment so far this year, pointing out that leasing still happens. MSC Pushes Back Against Cecil Township’s 2,500-Ft Setback Law

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

Earlier this week, three of five supervisors in Cecil Township (Washington County), PA, voted to ban all new fracking via a new setback (distance from well to nearest structure) requirement of 2,500 feet (see Cecil Twp Supervisors Pull the Trigger on Frack Ban Via Setbacks). We told you the new setback distance bans virtually all new shale drilling in the town. The Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC) agrees. Following Cecil’s disappointing action, the MSC published a blog post and white paper refuting Cecil’s ill-advised action with facts. The MSC points out that PA already has some of the strictest setbacks in the country. The MSC debunks wildly inaccurate “health” claims used to justify Cecil’s setbacks. EQT CEO Says the M-U Needs to Get Back to Building Pipelines

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

According to Hart Energy, “massive” transformations are “shaking” the natural gas industry along the Gulf Coast via new pipelines in Texas and LNG export plants in Louisiana. However, the nation’s largest gas field on the eastern side of the U.S., the Marcellus Shale, is not seeing the same transformations. Why? “CEOs are often fighting political battles for permission to build infrastructure.” According to EQT Corp. CEO Toby Rice, the solution is to get back to building new pipelines. If only we could… Read More “EQT CEO Says the M-U Needs to Get Back to Building Pipelines”

AES Indiana Gets OK to Convert Petersburg Coal Plants to NatGas

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

AES Indiana, formerly known as Indianapolis Power & Light Company, is a utility company providing electric service to the city of Indianapolis. It is a subsidiary and largest utility of AES Corporation. In August, AES Indiana said that it wants to invest $1.1 billion in Pike County, IN, to convert the company’s two remaining coal-fired power plants to use natural gas (see AES Indiana Spending $1.1B to Convert Last Coal Plants to NatGas). Unfortunately, the coal lobby pressured some Republican politicians, including Indiana’s Republican candidate for governor, into opposing the plan. Fortunately, the state Utility Regulatory Commission saw through the politics and voted 5-0 yesterday to allow AES Indiana to convert the two coal plants at the Petersburg Generating Station to use natural gas instead. Top 5 Energy Issues for Trump-Vance to Tackle Starting Jan. 20

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

Donald Trump and J.D. Vance have a monumental task ahead in fixing all of the things broken by the current administration, especially with regard to energy policy. A complete remake of the EPA would be a great place to start. A good house cleaning at the Department of Energy (DOE) would be another. What about policy issues? What should be the top issues to tackle that would have an immediate impact on the country and begin to restore our lost energy security? We have a few suggestions… Read More “Top 5 Energy Issues for Trump-Vance to Tackle Starting Jan. 20”

Radicalized Big Green Groups Pledge Lawfare Against Trump Admin

    November 7, 2024November 7, 2024

The election of Donald Trump as President for a second term is about the best thing that has happened for Big Green groups in years. Why? They all (and we mean ALL) are fundraising using Trump’s name, hoping to shake some more coins out of the faithful lemmings that contribute to their twisted causes. We’re talking about groups like Earthworks, Sierra Club, Food & Water Watch, Environmental Defense Fund, National Resources Defense Council, and more. In our review of these groups’ websites and press announcements following Trump’s crushing victory, we noticed two things they all are doing: (1) fundraising to “fight Trump” and (2) pledging massive new rounds of lawfare against anything and everything the Trump administration does. Our message to these sickos: BRING IT ON! We’re ready for you this time. Read More “Radicalized Big Green Groups Pledge Lawfare Against Trump Admin”

MPLX to Build New Harmon Creek III Gas Processing in PA Marcellus

    November 6, 2024November 6, 2024

In late 2015, MPLX (i.e., Marathon Petroleum) bought out and merged in the Utica Shale’s premier midstream company, MarkWest Energy, for $15 billion (see MarkWest Energy Investors/Unitholders Approve Merger with Marathon). The “new” MarkWest, aka MPLX, plays on a much larger stage now, including ownership and operation of major assets in the Permian Basin and the Bakken Shale, in addition to the Marcellus/Utica. Yesterday, MPLX issued its third quarter 2024 update with some exciting news for the Marcellus: MPLX will add a 300 MMcf/d (million cubic feet per day) processing plant and 40,000 bpd (barrels per day) de-ethanizer to its Harmon Creek facility in southwestern Pennsylvania (Smith Township, Washington County). CEO of PA Fracking Company Says Frackers Idle, Hitting Rock Bottom

    November 6, 2024November 6, 2024

Dan Doyle is president of Reliance Well Services, a hydraulic fracturing (oilfield services, or OFS) company established in 2008 and based in Pennsylvania. Reliance works throughout the Appalachian and Illinois Basins. In an article published by Doyle on the OilPrice.com website, he says low natural gas prices, high interest rates, and reallocation of capital have led to a slump in demand for oilfield services like those offered by his company. Doyle said, “Frac’ers never want to admit that they’re idle, but we’re idle.” Read More “CEO of PA Fracking Company Says Frackers Idle, Hitting Rock Bottom”

8 Mo. After NY Legislature Passed CO2 Frack Ban, Gov Has Not Signed

    November 6, 2024November 6, 2024

Nearly eight months ago, the New York Senate passed a bill the Assembly had previously passed to ban the use of carbon dioxide in shale drilling (so-called “CO2 fracking”). Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul, a reliable anti-fossil fueler, still has not signed the bill into law. What the heck is going on? Why is she missing in action? We’ve written about this a few times, beginning two months after the bill was passed (see our NY CO2 fracking stories here). No matter why she hasn’t yet signed the bill, the longer it goes unsigned, the better chance we who live in NY have of trying to persuade Hochul not to sign it. We hesitate to offer any hope, but while there’s still time, there’s hope, however small it may be. Read More “8 Mo. After NY Legislature Passed CO2 Frack Ban, Gov Has Not Signed”

Biden-Harris DOJ Asks Fed Court to Reinstate DOE’s LNG “Pause”

    November 6, 2024November 6, 2024

One of the reasons Kamala Harris lost (and lost big) is a complete tone deafness on energy issues, including the “pause” she and her boss put on approving new LNG export requests all the way back in January (see White House Makes it Official – Biden Declares War on LNG Exports). Biden announced he would “pause” any approvals for new LNG export plants, with over a dozen requests in the pipeline, for at least one year while his people fart around pretending to figure out how to measure global warming as a new consideration for whether or not to approve projects. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm (can’t wait to see her gone!) said the “pause” would be over and done no later than January 2025. It certainly will be gone in January, Ms. Granholm! But, back to how the Biden-Harris administration is completely tone-deaf on this issue… Read More “Biden-Harris DOJ Asks Fed Court to Reinstate DOE’s LNG “Pause””
